IMO,a patrician is someone who can listen to what they enjoy, while still looking at it objectively without any social stigma

The guy who is right, regardless of critical opinion. could be either
A patrician album is an album that a plurality of patricians deem to be possess merit.
A patrician is a person who demonstrates laudable musical understanding and knowledge across a broad range of styles, and has independently formed a critical perspective from which he artistically evaluates music he hears, without paying heed to hype or anti-hype but solely on the basis of its musical composition as well as its role in the broader socio-artistic context.
A patrician also demonstrates the ability to logically defend his conclusions during a reasoned debate, should he be challenged.
Much of the commentary in this thread exhibits one of the most profound misconceptions re: the nature of patricianhood, namely that it is somehow derived from the music itself. This makes no sense, and can never make sense, and was never the basis of Plebeian-Patrician Theory.
Patricianhood is the antithesis of plebeianhood. Plebeianhood can be thought of as a sort of musical learned helplessness; a weak mind when exposed to the fundamental questions of aesthetics - What makes music good or bad? Do good and bad music exist? - buries itself in the proverbial sand, shutting out any threats of critical interpretations with shortcuts such as "MUH FEELS" or "it's entry-level" or "that's so generic", statements which are meaningless in any useful critical sense and indicate nothing about their supposed subject, but rather shift the focus of analysis from questions of artistic merit to questions of meta-artistic merit. E.g., "Does p4k/Scaruffi/CLT like it?" "Is this music popular or unpopular, on /mu/ or otherwise?"

yeah this thread is terrible. would caution against hyper-pursuit of intellectualizing music tho. seems like why a lot of people on this board end up going off music after a while. you can obviously be intellectual and analyze music while still enjoying it but there is something about going into any sort of artistic experience with the default mode of judging that does often put an intellectual screen between our emotions and the art. have talked to various literature grad students who have said their default mode of judging literature and looking for ways to tie it into philosophy and critical theory have made them unable to enjoy it on an emotional level. They still find it interesting but literature doesnt really have that spark for them anymore which is upsetting.
