>>
I dunno about obscure. Lots of people follow those labels. I think it's kinda funny when people label something obscure simply because they haven't heard it. Of course, if a big website covered it, then you're just copying them, right? Lose-lose situation.
>>
>>61122042
what's wrong with Liturgy?
>>
>>61122048
there's plenty of music covered by big websites that is still genuinely good, and music covered by big websites that is still bad
>>
Exactly. So obscurity is besides the point, right? Maybe people want to find new stuff. Nothing wrong with that.
>>
>>61122016
Not surprised, just seems pointless to try to showcase what charts fit your standards of "being obscure for obscurity's sake". For example, I don't recognize 4 albums from your picks. Does that make you obscure for obscurity's sake?
>>
>>61122049
liturgy wants so badly to be grandiose but it comes off as inauthentic and contrived. songs meander for way too long. they are only decent musicians so when the try to be """""diverse""""" it kills them because they cant play anything other than generic black metal with slightly odd time signatures.

it also has some of the worst production i have ever heard

>For example, I don't recognize 4 albums from your picks.
which ones?
that's probably your own fault.
>>61122147
>songs meander for too long
this implies that they have a through composed structure when in fact that are meditations, riffs. the evolving comes from the interaction of Hunter's voice rhythmically with the music.
> they cant play anything other than generic black metal with slightly odd time signatures.
show me black metal that sounds like Kel Valhaal or Father Vorizen and maybe I'll believe you.
>it also has some of the worst production i have ever heard
Yes I have heard this nitpick before
>>
"meandering" is applicable to long-form melodies that never seem to find structure or lead to a satisfying conclusion, which is not at all applicable to the postminimalism on The Ark Work.
>>
>>61122206
& it isnt yours?
>>
Pic related is just all the albums I've enjoyed this year. not sure what my AOTY is.

>>
>>61122301
>the guitar literally sounds like a ringtone from a 2006 nokia phone
disagree but even if you are genuinely thinking that it's still a nitpick
timbre of voice/instruments is a shallow complaint.
>how did i imply that in the least
see >>61122233
you would call Debussy "meandering"
you would not call Glass "meandering"
please do not shitpost, even if this is your shitpost trip
>>
>>61122292
I wasnt clear. Why isnt it your fault then that you aren't informed about the albums you called obscure? I've seen some of the albums in those lists at least mentioned, so it can't be too obscure if WCD/RYM/mu has wind of them.
>>
>>61122344
>nitpick
its isnt though, the guitar and brass sections are objectively compressed

>>61122344
if youre a faggot maybe

also "meandering" isnt a music term, it can be applicable to pseud gaybos who waste time on guitar noodling

I do several things at once. On Bandcamp, I follow labels that put out stuff I like, and then Bandcamp will email me when they have a new release. I also get emails when people who I think have good taste buy something. If they're willing to pay money, it is worth hearing.
I use RYM custom charts, and I also go through lists religiously.
I don't really ever read review sites. The exception is I'll look at stuff TMT posts, but not read their reviews. Their little blogs are decent, too.
I created my page and private groups to talk about music, so album names come up there. You're welcome to join one of those.
I also have made friends with some musicians and label people, and they'll consistently produce gems I haven't seen anywhere else.

it's ok, when i started getting into music i mostly listened to stuff fantano liked, and i have to thank him for that. i think it's normal to feel stuck after that because you're exposed to a broad range of genres at a very shallow depth, and the selection you're exposed to has been colored by someone else's opinion. once you exhaust /mu/core and sub-/mu/core too, this place will start to feel like a wasteland and you'll have to dig into generals and things to find new stuff. after a certain point other sources become vastly better than /mu/ to find stuff, but the search is more difficult and personal. this is probably where you start to develop your own taste.

some great online sources i use:

RYM charts (not the big ones--I like filtering by country or a relatively narrow genre, as that tends to expose you to people who are really into music from that country/microgenre and have good recs. also make sure to filter for EPs or singles instead of albums sometimes too)

narrow genre subreddits, e.g. /r/techno, /r/neofolk (top posts are usually canonical works which can be helpful)

narrow genre blogs
