is there any good quarter-tone music or is it just a gimmick?
>>
>>61118786
Turkish and southeast asian music allegedly use quartertones in a natural way. I'm sure there's plenty to explore with quarter-tones, so that it's not a gimmick, but the return on investment for figuring out quarter-tone harmony is low unless you compose with it.

Where do you draw the line between baroque and classical? Categorize the following compositions in either the baroque or classical era:

Baroque. Very much Baroque. Its all in the ornamentation.
>2
Baroque - those sequences, those tuttis, that basso continuo
>3
Classical - that prasing, that sentence form. that orchestration - held notes in the woodwinds. lack of baroque ornamentations
>4 Baroque - those sequences, that basso continuo, those ornamentations
>5 Baroque - Those ornamentations, that harpsichord, that contrapuntal texture
>6 Classical - That clarity, those bass motifs, those clear lines. Some quite baroque ornamentation though.
>7 - Baroque - Those ornamentations are so baroque its not funny. contrapuntal as fuck, ornamentation on top of ornamentation. Also harpsichord doesn't help it sound classical.

Basically Baroque period is ornamented as fuck, with thick contrapuntal textures.
Classical period has very clear lines, interesting bass and non-melodic material, often in motivic form, often homophonic, and with clear textures. It very rarely uses baroque-tier ornamentation.
>>
>>61133638
it really isn't

The two periods sound distinctly different if you know what to listen for.

So a piece can sound classical even if it's composed earlier than the inception of the era.
>>
>>61133687
I guess you mean the Giles piece? (Rosetti firmly falls within the Classical period)
I didn't listen to the whole thing, but it may be because its a requiem that it dispenses with the heavy ornamentation and contrapuntal textures. Starting with those drums is also very unusual so may not be your standard baroque piece.
It does have some pretty heavy baroque ornamentation which give it away.
>>
>>61133717
Yeah, I was thinking that church music may not actually fit into the whole categorization scheme for the styles. Can something else be created for this?

For example here's a baroque sacred piece
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1bf0-LT6EZg
and a classical piece
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=laO7Zi6Zsm8

Here's something that blurs the line
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ACt8yCebGkM
>>
>>61133786
If you want a hard and fast rule, anything written after 1750 is classical period.

You're right though that last piece is a combination of the Mozart requiem and Pergolesi's Stabat mater, quite interesting.

I think the labels :"baroque" and "classical" should be more than temporal labels, but there might not be something concrete that can be said about the respective styles of church music after all.

Oh well, worth a try.
>>
>>61133845
Its tough becuase music doesn't just magically go from one style to another, it evolves slowly over 5 to 10 to 50 years. You can classify some composers are "Transitional" like Beethoven or Mozart between Classical and Romantic period. Then it just comes down to listing the baroque or classical elements in each piece by the transitional composers. you can say he used X, Y and Z of baroque music, but started using A and B later on in his life, which are very classical.
>>
>>61133867
Even some single pieces have baroque and classical elements in them. I guess the question becomes if it's even reasonable to say a pieces is "baroque", say, if it has more baroque elements than classical elements? Because there's definitely a departure of Facco's style from Farina's style, for example.

Wolfgang Rihm - String Quartet no. 4
>The String Quartet No 4 is an extremely emotional work, full of harsh contrasts, passionate outbursts, craggy in its progress; therefore it is formally difficult to pin down. The sequence of two fast movements and one slow final farewell is unusual, whereby the hefty unisono run-up at the start also corresponds structurally to the resignation of the close as it seeps away. The first part – dominated by its ascending motif – issues into an alla Marcia, allegro ma non troppo which, for a short time, entails uniformly shaped passages. The second movement also has a bipartite layout: a predominantly chordal introduction and an “aria” (beginning subito andante), whose cantabile character is short-lived. There is a “long rest” preceding the final movement; it begins ethereally, then flares up briefly before being extinguished rapidly.

I'm really sorry if this is in some way a breach of the rules. I was browsing /pol/, and I got linked to a fairly stupid video about the decline of the West, or something - I didn't finish watching, in truth, because at one point there's a really great bit of music in it, and I can't find out what it is; I feel like it might be famous, but I'm not certain. If anyone here would give this video a listen and tell me if they recognise it, I'd be immensely grateful.

>>
So can composers 'hear' the chords and stuff they write in their heads? Or do they partially just write stuff by thinking it through logically, knowing the 'rules' of harmony and writing based off of that.
>>
>>61140181

One of them certainly had to hear them in his head...
>>
>>61140227
How much was the advanced tonality in beethoven's later works a logical consequence of his early works rather than him no longer having hearing to remind him that dissonance can be unpleasant?
>>
>>61140181
Each composer is different, but the good ones should be able to hear everything in the head, harmonies / chords / and all. Then they write it down and make it even better and examine the music to see if any rules need following or any counterpoint can be done better.

Getting into /classical/ the past couple years as I've been studying and learning to play violin, and loving all the Dvorak I've heard so far, what are some composers with strong, loud music like his? Recommend performers too if you can, I have whatcd. I mostly play and have been studying chamber music so I haven't heard much like his work.

For that matter are there any better performances of Dvorak I could be listening to? Listening to Jacqueline du Pré and Thomas Albertus Irnberger for his concertos and sonatas, then I have pic related for his largo from the new world. I'm not really sure what to look for in performers when looking at torrents.
