here's a few good tracks, but what's really interesting about hot sugar as a producer is where he gets his sounds from. most or all of what you're hearing is recordings of everyday sounds processed into drums and synths and stuff, here's a video that shows some of that process

Most of the other guys here are beatmakers, which is a different art altogether. My favs would be flylo, metal fingers, clammy clams, jay dilla, apollo brown, and nujabes. I think everyones top 10-15 would end up looking the same though. There's really only a select number who have turned beatmaking into an art. Imo

not really. 99% of 'producers' are not songwriters. They add drums over a sample of their choice. To actually put samples and drums together in a song fashion requires thought and skill, turning it into art. Music is art.
Look at the replies in this thread and there's a huge overlap between peoples choices. Because there's only a few who do it well.

Hot Sugar is one of the best out right now. Does interesting stuff and also has a good sense of melody and rhythm. Clams Casino hasn't done much lately but his earlier stuff was great. Alchemist is one of my favorites. Party Supplies because the Blue Chips series is great. Early 2000's hip hop is very underrated, the Neptunes are greattt. Madlib of course is great. DOOM has made some very solid stuff. SKYWLKR, the guy who produced XXX is also an interesting modern producer but I wish he did more. And Hit-Boy honestly is pretty great. He does what his name says: makes hits. Niggas in Paris and Goldie are both very memorable beats
