Yeah but that doesn't mean it was worthless. Even though I would have preferred if the story was more original, I kind of looked at it as a compromise between delivering on the old to establish the new. Especially after the bad taste that was left by the previous three films, they obviously went back to "what works" to guarantee that people wouldn't hate it. It's cheap, sure, but I hope now that they've done their pandering they'll be a lot more ambitious with the next couple of films.

I can understand it's appeal, but the problem is I'm a melody nerd and a song-writing nerd, and as much as I'd like to commend Mastodon for their obvious experimentation on that album, it just doesn't work for me as a whole. It really lacked cohesion, and just came off as kinda meandering to me.
But that's my opinion. Once More was a step down in some senses, since they didn't use all the styles that were present in CTS, but it was so much more cohesive for me.

Righto then. I'm obligated to namedrop Crowbar just because they're as central to whole genre as the rest of the NOLA lot, but they're likely not what you want.
Aside from EHG, you've got some solid options in Noothgrush, Fistula (or any of the thousand other side projects that guy is involved with) and Drainland. Plenty of others, but those are the first few to come to mind.
Also you might like Dystopia (possibly the angriest sludge/crust I've ever heard) and Arson Anthem (basically Anselmo and Mike Williams dicking around with a punk band) .
Also some of the more Hellhammer-worshipping crust/death/black bands might be right up your alley.

Yeah, I was referring to Brain Drill, who personally I'm not a fan of, their songs are just kind of mindless wank, as seems to be everyone's problem with them. I've seen Viraemia compared to them saying that they're essentially BD but not mindless, basically wank but with somewhat of a purpose to it, and a semblance of song structure, similarly to Origin, who I also quite like. they are pretty simple structurally, personally I dont have much of a standard for that kind of stuff though, I dont mind if they just play verse chorus verse chorus breakdown chorus 5 tracks in a row honestly, though like you said, there is better stuff out there that does do interesting things with their song structures, but in all honesty tech death isn't my most knowledgeable subgenre.
