It was at the forefront of the feminist movement in the late 80s/early 90s. Notice how many of the early grunge bands were all-female, or at least female-fronted.

They don't?

>>

lets not. this kind of shit made me wanna barf. its so fucked that this shit is glorified now. it is 90s alt rock that got in through the back door after the grunge explosion and everybody was trying to have a rough edge. it was a terrible time. next thing you losers are gonna start ironically listening to matchbox 20 OH WAIT

>>61110460
terrible time my ass - it was the post-grunge hit parade! whether it was on the radio or music videos on television, nearly everything in this thread happened during or just after the grunge bloom, and it gave new life to pop music.

tons of guitar bands with clever lyrics and catchy tunes made hundreds of genuine pop hits. not that I'm nostalgic for Matchbox 20 either, but face it: dozens of scrappy one-hit-wonders got their single chance at "making it" and succeeded (back when that meant something - money too!)

which is a hell of a lot more than I can say for the current dire pop situation. as if I'm ever going to remeber Adele's indistinct "Hello" 15+ years on...
>>
>>61110611
And a lot of it wasn't even post-grunge. The Smashing Pumpkins pretty much dominated the alternative scene during the mid 90s, and they were probably one of the most innovative bands ever IMO.
>>
>>61110667
whatever you call it, it was solid pop music - even if the "hard-edged", "dark" aesthetic and labeling it "rock" fooled legions of young people into thinking it wasn't

I actually really liked the whole edginess thing. I feel like it was necessary after an entire decade of nothing but boring, radio friendly garbage.

Anyone who tells me Jimmy Eat World's Clarity isn't a bonafide classic album can french my starfish for real.

but it WAS radio-friendly! (these songs sounded fantastic coming out the radio.) "Give It Away" by RHCP? C'mon! not just that, but the harder-edged "rock" groups were far more interesting sonically and ended up outcompeting what was supposed to be "pop" music!

THAT'S one of the main things I thought was great about that time MSM-wise: just how much great-sounding music was being produced at that time. it felt endless, up until the early 00's. then (in retrospect) it felt like the big boss at the top of the skyscraper gave the order to stop acquiring new rock bands and all at once it was like the tap got turned off. I tuned out, came back in '09 and have been addicted to increasingly obscure genres of music ever since!

people actually believe that Seether is a better band than Pearl Jam.

Louise was stunning, they were playing together. They just released Ghost Notes (new album) this year together again with the original band. And no i didn't kiss her in the mouth but I shook both of their hands and told them they were fucking amazing.
