Why listen to Beethoven's overblown fugues when you could listen to good fugues? Beethoven's a great composer, but he struggled with fugues.
His best work is his piano sonatas and violin concerto. String quartets are pretty good, also his cello sonatas, and obviously symphonies are excellent.
