Just how expensive do you have to go before you reach the territory of snake-oil-tier diminishing returns?

When you need anything more than an amp/dac
Anything above a regular headphone jack
>>61089145
more than $3k on amp + speakers + dac + turntable
>>61089204
>turntable
>>61089145
...you think that's bullshit?
You need a cable that good to be close-to completely level so that the sound doesn't hit the sides and get muffled or get an echo effect
>>61089224
>I spend more time thinking about how I listen to music than listening to music
fuck off retard
>>61089272
Enjoy your muffled cave music, you idiot
At least take the time to coil-insulate your cables yourself or else you're literally damaging your files as you play them
somebody please post the picture of that smug old man that looks like frip with all the huge cables plugged into his macbook

reminder that even "professional" audiophiles couldn't tell the difference in a blind test between sound being played through a multi-thousand dollar cable and sound being played through a coat hanger
>>61089145
around $1,000.
200-400 for Amp/Dac
~600-800 for Headphones
any more and you're just squeezing the last 1% out of the 99% threshold for audio quality.
well for diminishing returns to mean something you'd have to have something to compare it to. say i had a $6 dollar pair of in ears and there was a $300 pair of in ears with slightly better fidelity. is the $294 more dollars worth the fidelity? both are reproducing sound with low distortion so maybe i figure it's not worth it solely on sound quality.

Anything you can pass electricity through, senpai

all that insulation and it bare at the ends for like 2 inches

When you buy 1k+ speakers, but you don't treat your listening environment or optimize speaker placement.
Speakers do get better the higher up in price you go, not to say that it's worth it because of diminishing return but there's not as much snake oil as in the high quality cable business. I'd focus on getting some damn good speakers, a pretty good tube amp (not too expensive), a nice record player with a somewhat expensive pickup, and then room treatment. Those are the things that are going to affect your sound the most.

Trick question. Recordings can never capture the experience of being in the same acoustic space as a live performer. So if you really are an "audiophile", you'd spend your money on live concerts.
>>61089334
Have the original somewhere aswell but cant be bothered to find it familia
>>61092467
Some very high end speakers apparently give you a very close feeling to being in the same room as a performer, but we're talking >$100,000 setups here.
>>61089357
how's it sound?
A lot of the expense past a certain point isn't getting you better equipment in terms of sound but better equipment in terms of build quality, reliability and longevity.

why Steely Dan?
>>61092467
In the vast majority of recorded music, especially popular music, youre not trying to replicate the experience of a live performance, youre trying to recreate an illusion created by an engineer at a mixing desk.
