What should one be looking for in a computer for producing? Desktop or laptop? Audio card or processor speed? PC or Mac?

what are you looking to make? i get by just fine with a mac book pro.
>>
>>61084624
not op, but im looking for a macbook pro myself but i wasnt aware of that price. are there any 15" pros in the $900-1000 range?
>>
a good processor.
just buy an i7 Mac
>>
You should probably use an external soundcard that will handle all the audio, otherwise you will probably have latency and maybe not be able to handle enough plugins and stuff.

Get a laptop if you ever feel like you'll want to use it in a live show or take it over to a friends house or something.

PC and Mac are both fine in my opinion, get what's more comfortable for you. There is some exclusive software, I guess mostly Logic at this point, but other than that they both work the same.
>>
>>61084664
you can check ebay.
>>
>>61084664
not really sure. i got mine in a tech kit from school for $2500. came with the mac book pro, midi keyboard, pro tools 10, 11. the ableton suite, and an interface. so I'm not really sure how much of that was the laptop
>>
>>61084624
I get by fine on my desktop but it can't connect to the internet as its in my sleep out (living that 18 year old semi-neet life). So I'm trying to decide between a laptop (could sample for days, save anything I liked the sound of, etc) or getting another desktop (move old one inside for getting samples, vsts, etc. Better specs for same price and bigger screen/dual monitors)
>>
>>61085108
The main pull of the laptop for me is the portability, I have friends who prod aswell so it'd be handy to take from place to place. But then obviously dual monitors are just so good
>>
>>61083710
Macbooks are overrated for production unless you're going to be producing on the go. For the price of a decent Macbook you can get a brutal desktop, giant screen, and monitors.

Nigga, what? they come stock with some of the best effects.

>dealing with windows
>macs are overpriced meme
>>
>>61085372
There so many free decent plugins it's insane. Why pay the Apple tax to get a few more unless you're too retarded to download? I still laugh at one of my teachers saying that music programs crash constantly with Windows. 3 years on and I've had two crashes in Ableton, all of which were recoverable.
>>
>>61085461
>implying free VSTS are of the same quality of apple VSTS
>>
>>61085372
so these vst are automatic when you buy ableton on a macbook?
>>
>>61084685
>>61084709
is the 2014 macbook a lot better than the 2013 version? im trying to decide whether itll make a difference when it comes to music production.
>>
>>61085745
a macbook.
>>
>>61085772
no, I have a 2013 non retina. it's fine. no complaints et all. just make sure you buy an i7 or at least an i5.
>>
>>61085372
>macs are overpriced meme
except they actually are...

>dealing with windows
DUDE DEALING WITH A COMPETENT AND SUPERIOR OS IS SO HARD LMAO
>>

fags comparing an i5/i7 mac with a pentium core pc lmao
>>

sure, but not by how much people actually claim.
a comparable windows computer is only about $100 less.

>DUDE DEALING WITH A COMPETENT AND SUPERIOR OS IS SO HARD LMAO
>dat delusion tho

OP here throwin' in my 2 cents:
Linux>Windows>OSX in terms of OS
Windows>all in terms of programs, plugins, etc

what the hell are you even talking about? You know you can put any cpu you want in a pc?
>>
You want a good amount of RAM, but mostly the best CPU you can afford. Don't worry about sound card, your interface will take care of that. Even your basic Focusrite interface will kick enough arse to do it. Get a desktop, PC.
>>
>>61086085
linux would be a based OS if it had software support.
but I disagree. imo
unix systems > windows

I tried windows 10 on bootcamp tho. I like it.
>>
if you're going to be using a lot of samples, get an extra SSD to use to store samples and as cache if you need

8gb of RAM minimum, 16 if you can afford it

an external soundcard/interface as well
>>
>>61086104
this is my point, you retard
>>
>>61086218
>8gb of RAM minimum, 16 if you can afford it
Fuck off with this.
>>
>>61086294
>he doesn't buy more ram than he'll ever need.
16 gb will be standard eventually.
>>
>>61086337
But by the time it's standard won't we be up to like ddr4? I should probably know this seeing as I did a computing course but I think that's a fair statement
>>
>>61086294

mmmm how about you explain yourself without sounding like a /b/tard?

because, you see, Windows uses ~2 GB to run, add a few background processes and whatnot, 3GB, Ableton raises that to around ~3.5 GB, and unless you use a SSD to store your samples, you'll wanna load some samples to your RAM to avoid disk overdriving, and suddendly you're out of RAM, unless you have pagefile sys enabled like a complete moron, in which case your HDD will fuck up

retard

holy shit.

>Desktop or laptop?
Lower price v. mobility.
>Audio card or processor speed?
Audio cards are placebo. Processor speed is better, but you don't need as much proc power as most MBPs have nowadays.
>PC or Mac?
Doesn't matter at all. Again, it's only price and personal preference.
>>
>>61086404
probably. point is, you can never have too much ram.
>>
>>61086458
>Audio cards are placebo

yeah and latency is a myth amirite

>>61086456

why is this place so fucking retarded?
>>

it's a music board not /g/ -wait nevermind.

This seems like as good a place to post this as any.

I'm looking for a good audio interface with at least two XLR inputs (more than that is a bonus but I need at least two).

What are my best options?

I've been looking at this, the Native Instruments Komplete Audio 6. It seems to tick all my boxes and has generally good reviews.
>>
>>61086531
the actual improvement that audio cards will give you is pretty damn small compared to spending a similar amount on other equipment like a DAC
>>
>>61084683

how many plugins you can handle is a cpu and to some extent a memory issue, soundcard only help with audio quality issues(avoiding latency at high bit rates).
>>
>>61086600

A DAC is an external SOUND CARD in this context

and if you want to be an autistic about it, your shitty internal Realtek 97 is by definition a DAC

not sure how /mu/ does it, but in /prod/ and in /g/ DAC=External soundcard
>>
>>61084709
keke your school ripped you off. you can get a basically new mac pro for 1000$, pirate any software, and get a professional quality interface used 200$
>>
>>61086576

One absolute classic sound card is the M-Audio fasttrack pro, works pretty much flawlessly on all PCs
>>
>>61086640
So we're arguing semantics then. Nvm.

Guess we agree then.

Actually, you're right. Even a fucking kid who just installed FL studio knows how retarded that guy is. My bad.

I think his point was that he doubts that you are a so-called "veteran producer"

please do yourself a favor and learn how to use ableton. I wasted a year and $1500 on machine bullshit.

Also I have a mac book pro now and its real good for music stuff
>>
>>61086830
Not sure what machine is, I assume it's a DAW. The pic in OP is just off Google, I use fl atm like a pleb
>>
>>61086900
it's a daw owned by NI.
it's okay, but I can't recommend. ableton is the clear winner.
>>
>>61086767

my point is, how stupid to bring up you're a veteran producer. like it holds any weight on an anonymous image board.
