even someone like me who is more receptive to metalcore than others will admit that the modern scene is largely trash. the prog/tech scene has some cool stuff but spending time on /r/metalcore gives me little faith in the genre as a whole

I honestly don't really care about Re:No's "metalness." I fully agree that Rami is a better vocalist both technically and for a power metal band. However, I don't think Re:NO is bad nor does she sound lazy. The main reason why I like the third and fourth albums better are for the more diverse and stronger songwriting. The first two had great metal tracks, but I found the hard rock and ballad stuff to be lacking. I think they improved a lot on that afterwards.
My CD is still shipping, so I'll listen to it then, but I've even heard from a Re:NO detractor that she improved a lot on it.

Animosity and Burning Skies are the OG artists I'd recommend to anyone. If you want something more technical, try early Despised Icon or Zubrowska. If you want modern proggy/tech stuff, well, there's a lot to choose from but Mapmaker and Kardashev are my favorites I think.

On Lp, not that much, Benediction and Bolt Thrower got THE killing formula, as no band an replicate BUT, you might want to try Asphyx and Hail Of Bullets.

Well, Fair to Midland has a nu-metalish song, but they're mostly alternative rock.
Some would consider Deftones to be "progressive" nu metal, and some might say Mr. Bungle is too, though it's more avant garde
You might try Korn's first 3 albums, even though they basically pioneered the genre, nothing that came after KoRn sounded anything like them. Adema was just a poor man's copy, that could never reach the genuine spirit of Korn, or the truly dark and depressive tone
