Exactly this. In fact, the reviewer criticized Kendrick for not toeing the party line when it came to Ferguson:

>It was the amendment to his controversial statements to Billboard magazine that veered uncomfortably close to respectability politics. ("What happened to [Michael Brown] should've never happened. Never," he told the magazine. "But when we don't have respect for ourselves, how do we expect them to respect us? It starts from within. Don't start with just a rally, don't start from looting—it starts from within.")

>>61068406
Idk, it always sounds weird as a black guy to hear people talking about "blackness" when throughout my entire childhood my parents were really intent about teaching me to not let my race define me as a person (not in a negative manner or anything, just telling me that my identity should come down to being a "good man" regardless of race instead of just a "black man"). P4k tries to sidestep the whole thing by saying "blackness is fluid" or whatever but who knows what that even means. Just a lot of stuff about the reactions to TPAB and the general race conversation in 2015 really irks me but whatever.
>>61068418
Yeah I would like to think so too but Kendrick has always been someone who's upfront about the meaning of his music and I feel like he wouldn't be scared to correct people if he thought it was getting misinterpreted. Maybe he just doesn't want to get jumped on again after people gave him shit about the ending of The Blacker the Berry but I doubt it.

I tried to give it a listen but just ended up not enjoying it. I did skip through the tracks a little before giving up, certainly might be some interesting sounds, and the Drake collab album wasn't bad, but I'm not getting the DS2 hype
>>

When did p4k get so cuck? 3 albums about being black in the top 10, the text for their wright ups is just about politics and being black, they don't say shit about the actual music and lets face it Run The Jewles won last year just because p4k can't stop jerking off to cuck porn and trying to further cultural Marxism. P4k was once an edgy place to listen to hip indie music but now they just treat listening to music as a bold political statement.

All of this Blackness is important. Important because sometimes white people need to take a metaphorical seat—to sit down, shut up, and listen to conversations in which they are a cultural object, not the center. This is not an easy task. White people have been way too comfortable for way too long in this country, in this world. Way too comfortable with the way they choose to see reality solely through their own gaze, way too comfortable with their sense of entitlement over the planet and its resources, way too comfortable with their appropriation of culture in ways large and small, way too comfortable with the stories they tell, the lies passed off as the history of mankind. Way too comfortable with the things they pick up, way too careless with the way they put them down. But Kendrick was willing to discomfort the comfortable. He took all of the acclaim he had received as a critical darling from his debut—the rightfully extolled good kid, m.A.A.d city—and doubled down on his Blackness, not for the entertainment of white people, but in near-total disregard for their experience of his conversation. He was Miles Davis playing with his back to the crowd, and in that sense, it's a miracle that this record has found the audiences that it has found.

Lol don't act like talking about white people being shit is hard p4k.

The appeal of DS2 is that it quite an emotionally sincere, brooding and dark album while simultaneously being a very energetic trap album that people can turn up to. The darkness is enhanced successfully by the palette and booming 808s driving the album forward. The production on this album from predominantly the talented Metro Boomin and Southside is their best production work to date.

The slurred and lazy vocal delivery by Future, while hard to decipher compliments the album hazy aesthetic perfectly, emphasising form over function for this album. His voice is much like a instrument, with no real more weight in the production than the other elements. You would find this similar to Young Thug on Barter 6, with his sing raps being an instrumental element of the production, providing occasional imagery to compliment the aesthetic of the album.

That's the appeal of DS2, I can't really tell you much else besides giving it a go one time in the car at night with some big volume, with friends getting turnt up, or by yourself in an aggressive and depressive state.

Does anyone else feel like kendrick probably doesn't feel so good about what this album's been a part of? He doesn't want black people to rise up and overthrow the government, he just wants them to take themselves more seriously

Holy shit p4k, you've outdone yourself. I didn't expect it to be this guy.

because he dared to imply in the last verse that fixing the 'black community' might be a 2 way street which on top of getting help from the broader culture includes fixing shit themselves

but it goes against the narrative so p4k handwaves it as 'respectability politics' and 'victim blaming' and kendrick making a misstep and being silly

New Bermuda is about half as good. Its basically Getting Used To Our New Members: The Album
>>
Pitchfork doesn't get the album it is the best album of the last 10 years though honestly. But the album is not about white people at any moment. Kendrick made that clear through twitter. He isn't surprised that policemen kill black people. "How can you expect them to respect us if we don't respect ourselves?"

Kendrick is a Christian. He believes that black people and only black people themselves can save themselves from the problems in their community. It's a natural follow up to the first album.

He gives a blueprint. In order for black people to solve issues in their community they must first:
Love and respect themselves (I),
Think positively and trust in God(Alright)
Cease falling into the traps that the world creates for them(For Sale? Interlude);
Consumerism(Wesley's Theory),
Ignorance (Institutionalized),
Petty infighting and gang mentality (Hood Politics),
Lack of compassion (How Much A Dollar Costs),
Internalized racism and colorism (Complexion A Zulu Love)
Not being true to yourself (You Ain't Gotta Lie)

Kendrick explains the issues with modern black culture and community with a poem about a caterpillar living in the city that must eat to survive, but he see's a butterfly and figures out that he can use the beauty of that butterfly to obtain riches for himself. Thus the Caterpillar Pimps the Butterfly.

What people don't realize is Kendrick is talking about African Americans in his reference and not just musicians. He is talking about the self destructive attitudes and actions within his own community that leads to a circle of violent behavior, self destructive attitudes, self hate, and poverty. He is stating that people stuck in these cycles of violence are so blind to the world beyond it that they suck anyone healthy into their circles, exploiting them for temporary gain, and corrupting them as well.

There was a excellent episode of the Boondocks about Martin Luther King Jr Coming back from the dead that covered some similar themes.
>>
>>61069357
That's not the only place where he says that black people's problems might lie within themselves right? I don't remember all of it but I think there were a few more lyrics like that

yeah you're 100% right

the best part is that kendrick calls black people out on there shit for asking for so much shit and being bitches about trayvon martin and ferguson. literally all retarded sjws think he is saying blacks deserve to be on top or some white guilt garbage
>>
>>61069498
Maybe it has to do with the fact that those "nig nogs" have been responsible for the majority of good music throughout history.
>>
>>61069339
>>61069410
>>61069889
This so hard. I feel bad about the massive misinterpretation of Kendrick's message by both people complaining about "cucks" and "sjw's" and "it's only well rated because nigger" as well as #Blacklivesmatter supporters that use it as a platform because they're too ignorant to actually pay attention to what he's saying.

I can get not enjoying the music on the album but Kendrick uses metaphors heavily to establish a well thought-out theme that just might be one of the best ones of our times if you can accept it. I feel bad that plebs think that GKMC is even better than TPAB because it's more accessible and a more generic hip hop project (not that I have much against that).

Nah, it's just that despite the lower amount of black artists throughout all of music, usually the best R&B, Hip-Hop, and (generally speaking) Jazz albums are all released by black artists, and annually a good handful of those are in contention for top spots on year end lists.

It's funny how you people hate on everything that's popular. When GKMC was released everyone was so hype about it and it was praised to the skies on /mu/. Then a couple of weeks later after it's been critically acclaimed most people were shitting on it.

Also 2015 has been a bad year for music. It's only natural that tpab gets #1. The influence paired with lyricism, production and concept this album has is pretty unique.

The problem is there's no passion in the center.
It's bullshit, but political movements and change come from passion, it's hard for people to care about something without it.

It's just like how Swimming Pools was used by teenagers and college students as a drinking anthem. And this is nothing new, popular songs get misapplied by the masses all the time. Like how Born in the USA is used as an American patriotism song. People are too lazy to actually analyze even a single song and just latch onto the chorus without understanding the context of it.

Every single discussion about Pimp A Butterfly devolves into a completely unrelated wider discussion of race politics, because the album does not hold up on its own. Listen to the thing and its literally "THIS DICK AIN FRE" and "BOO BOO." but it has to be good because MUH BLACKNESS RIGHT?

Fuck this shit. You have to throw all the politics into it because the music is completely mediocre and people are unwilling to accept that kendrick fell off.
