What tracks are you spinning/mixing?
Any gigs coming up?
Any tips to people starting to DJ?
What hardware/software are you using?
Cool stories? Share them here.
>>
>What tracks are you spinning/mixing?
A lot of nostalgic tracks from Ministry of Sounds mixed with some PC music.
>Any gigs coming up?
I have a 21st birthday rave thing to do in early January.
>Any tips to people starting to DJ?
Practice, and read up on other people's advice to new comers.
>What hardware/software are you using?
A DDJ-SB2 and a CDJ-2000nexus with Serato.
>Cool stories? Share them here.
Sure why not:
>Winter College Dance last Friday
>Show up later than I wanted with my hardware because of stupid ass traffic.
>Realize we are missing a cable
>Start to flip out and worry as the minutes fly by before doors open
>Recognize that the cable that we do have is the exact one I need, but a totally different color.
>DJ for four hours, get tons of praise, and sleep well.

just turned 18, gonna start going to heaps of clubs and stuff and hopefully talk my way around a get a warm up set or something, been djing at home for a bit, not many house parties and stuff cus my friends dont like my kinda stuff

What hardware are you using?
>>
>>61044637
used to have a traktor s4 but broke it, just using a A&H xone k2 i got mapped for 2 deck control on traktor, does the job
>>
>>61044650
What type of music are you playing?
I am interested in that Xone K2...
>>
>>61044689
/bleep/ stuff like techno, house, a bit of dubstep/footwork stuff
>>
>>61044720
That's ill.
How did you get into DJing?
>>
>>61044726
used to be really into hardstyle a while ago, wanted to do a dj project with a couple mates, never really tho, just pursued it on my own
>>
>>61044798
That's cool. I am trying to get a collective of my friends to start DJing. So far it's me, and my three other friends. We all have different styles so we are trying to incorporate all of our tastes into one set.
>>
Is djing a better way to get pu$$y then producing? How does it compare in terms of learning curve?
I produce atm but I've met a lot of djs and they all seem to be pretty popular
>>
>>61044849
I mean producing is really behind the scenes unless you are also DJing what you produce.
Look at RL Grime for example:
The dude produces very popular bangers and DJ's all his tracks at several different shows.
The learning curve for DJing is easier if you know all the songs that you are playing, so I can imagine that a producer has an easy time DJing their own tracks.
>>
>>61044849
Also please post your work. I'd really be interested to heat it.
>>
>>61044824
cool cool, would be good for house parties and stuff where you dont want to be playing the same style for hours
>>
>>61044982
Yeah like at the winter dance thing I was talking about earlier, it was me and my friend DJing, and his style is a bit different from mine, so we were able to transition from Pjanoo by Eric Prydz into Star Eyes - The Night (Hostage Remix) for example. The variety really keeps the crowd moving, but never lower the energy if people are really into it.
>>
>>61044939
When I say I produce I mean I mess around on fruity loops and upload to SoundCloud. It's not great atm as the computer I prod on isn't connected to the internet so I dont sample and just use default instruments and vsts. But anywho enough excuses here's my sc:

>>
>>61045156
So yeah based off what you said I can tell you this:
DJing and producing are both beautiful art forms.
For starters, DJ's have the advantage of having already fire tracks ready to play, all they have to do is ensure that everything syncs and sounds correctly.

You know it's interesting that you post this track. I never thought growing up and missing this song's popularity that I'd ever heat it dropped at a concert but RL Grime and G.T.A both played this track at their shows.
Shit got me so hype.

>What tracks are you spinning/mixing?
lots of /bleep/ type stuff, lots of 90s and 80s house, 90s techno, old school jungle, break beat, garage, a bit of footwork, hip hop, downtempo, literally whatever works that night. Im obsessed with collecting music right now so i have gigabtyes of each genre i spin and can go for at least an hour (if not 3) in each genre..
>Any gigs coming up?
doing a 11pm warm up slot on the 19th, then closing that night off from 3-7. Opening for some out of towner on the 8th, then doing a diy fest on the 18th of jan.
>Any tips to people starting to DJ?
go see djs live and phrase match or fuck off.
>What hardware/software are you using?
cdjs if their at the gig, otherwise i just use my shite numark mixtrack to mix.
>Cool stories? Share them here.
last Saturday i was spinning at a bar, this weird dude who smokes spice who i see regularly at shows im playing comes up to me while im spinning and gives me a $10 bill. I ask what its for and he says "From IFORGOETNAME Records", immediately i know its just some weird label hes doing and hes selling my music without my permission. I ask him what track did he use, he used some god awful joke rap song i did last year that i put out under a different alias. I stop caring because i deleted that track, and if he wants to sell that garbage then whatever, his choice. He comes back to me while im taking a break and having a drink at the bar while my friend is spinnin and hands me a piece of cardboard folded in half, its actually the cd case, inside is a staples cdr. The front is just his hand writing, first track is my rap track, the rest are all his music. I walk back to the booth trying not to laugh my ass off, throw it in my bag so i can listen to his music in the morning.

The dude is literally selling folded pieces of cardboard with cdrs inside ON THE STREET.

Turned out his music was very strange, in a bad way. he tried to rap a few times and it was worse than my rap track. Still got $10 though.

How do you accumulate such a large library of music?
>>
>>61047038
Still works sometimes.
>>
>>61047075
i spend a lot of time just digging for music. When im just casually listening to music now im just digging for new tunes. Discogs is one of the best tools if you use it right, same as youtube, bandcamp and keeping up with some blogs//what my friends produce. Use soulseek or whatever else to download it. Bandcamp is good too. I also record shop when i have enough money, and whenever i travel i buy some records.

Mixing is an art form. I mean the technical skills not just the music content.
>>
>>61047174
i used to play in bands and shit when i was in high school so i was getting booked for years before i started taking djing seriously. My first REAL gig as a DJ i got through my producer friend, he was helping get some people put on a little party. Its really all about who you know for gigs. Id recommend setting up your own party or gig to start, hit up some other local DJs to play, keep it semi-casual (ie dont call it MEGARAGER 32) so that if it isnt a full house its at least a really good time and everyone has a great time, some of my fav parties are just low key ones with good djs. If u have a good set and the party goes well and u set it up all right, you're deff gonna be able to get alot more gigs just through the DJs you had play. Its one of those scratch my back i scratch your back things. Its all about who you know.
>>
>>61047145

once the DJs have heard you mix, know you know what it takes to set up and promote an event. If you land more gigs, and just keep killing it, more DJs with more influence will hear you spin, and hopefully like you, your selection and your skills and give u a chance on some bigger shows and connect you with even more DJs. Just dont be worried to take your time to build your skills. Its all about first impressions and image. Dont be fake, people can see through that. Just be yourself, have skill, have respect, keep working on working up the ladder, while also not being dependent on the ladder, dont forget that the real people to impress arent just the djs, but the people.

Oh just my thread. I got offered a job djing in a cali bay club and when i asked what sort of music they want me to dj i was just told "electronic". Im normally a prodcuer but my stuff isnt really fit for the club especially since most of its 4/4 so im curious, what sort of tracks are good to play at these sort of venues. Like just top 40 electoric crap and the occassional sandstorm or something like that?
>>
>>61048405
probs spinnin records type shit, best thing would be to go to the club a couple times on the days before and get a feel of the music played there
>>
>>61048425
thanks, ill do this
