It's tuneless music with only one mood made by talentless assholes. Why do people pretend to like it?
>>
"Music"
>>
>>61043704
Cause it's primal and extreme, and pretty fun to make
>>

ITS FUCKING ALTERNATIVE.... COUNTERCULTURE....
>>
>>61043767
>>61043733
Saying "pleb" isn't discussion nor is it an argument.
>>
>>61043726
But it sounds horrible and anybody can make it. Hardcore Punk is more primal and extreme because it actually takes extreme physical effort to perform.
>>
it makes them feel superior to others. its the adult male equivalent to those 16 year olds on tumblr who think liking halsey and twenty one pilots makes them special or "indie"
>>
literally reddit the thread
>>
>>61043900
I think you're projecting pretty hard right now
>>
>>61043844
>Hardcore Punk is more primal and extreme because it actually takes extreme physical effort to perform.
by that definition, so is progressive rock, it takes even more effort
>>
I don't really get it at all but a friend of mine put it into good terms for me

It's a really safe way to experience unpleasant emotions that you'd have to actually be in danger to discover otherwise
>>
>>61043916
What the fuck does that even mean. Do you really confide some sort of tribalism in 4chan?
>>
>>61043928
>hurr im going to deflect what you said because its true but i cant accept it
>>
>>61043930
No it technically doesn't. It and Jazz are done musicians that have control and know what they're doing. Nothing primal about control.
>>
"primal" is literally most overused and retarded word that \m/ men \m/ use to describe "aggressive" music
>>
>>61043704
i think it's nice to explore not only music, but sound in every way, it makes you question stuff, what is music? what is art? should everything be nice to listen to?

>Harsh Noise is complete shit
personally i agree, but i'm also glad it exists, there's no harm in it, except in your ears, but you can fix that by not listening to it but i think it's worth A listen

and as they said above, it's fun to make
>>
>>61043936
>It's a really safe way to experience unpleasant emotions that you'd have to actually be in danger to discover otherwise
Holy shit that's lame.

That's part of the appeal for me.
>>
I think it works much better as a live experience than as recorded music. It is very exciting to feel such massive sonic vibrations. Once in the studio doing a Harsh noise recording I almost got knocked over by the sound when I stepped out of the control booth

You either get it or you don't, making people justify why they like something is lame and obnoxious
>>

Come back when you're older and make sense with your arguments then. Good chaos isn't supposed to be "controlled" because otherwise it'd be easy to digest.

the reason why you think noise is "complete shit" is because the only noise you listened to is pulse demon or some dumb shit. here, have some proper european noise:

I basically view it as a pallette cleanser. Whenever I'm beginning to tire of a certain style of music or music in general, I jam out to a good harsh noise album and in addition to being a very fun experience, it makes me appreciate structure in other pieces of music all the more.

Any means by which you apply variable pressure to a contact mic. Some people tape it to a piece of sheet metal, some people throw it in a bag of rocks, some people step on it and so on. Different results every time and highly sensitive, so it's hard to replicate anything you're able to produce.

alright, this is one of the first "noise" artists that i've heard. the first time i guess I'd say was this art festival in baltimore, and there was this "collective" inside on a stage and they played really chaotic sounds in a completely dark room with 3 strobe lights accompanying it. most of the people (who were still sitting there from the past performance - 3 women singing renaissance music) got up and left within a minute.

i sat there for about 5 minutes before i concluded that it, and this entire genre, is probably just an attempt by art students (I can't imagine music students creating this stuff) trying to be original and different and expressive.

the modern art scene, it seems to me, is going in a direction of meaningless chaos that people will definitely interpret as "primal" and expressive, but only because that's literally all that it can be interpreted as...

i don't want to say that i dislike it, like i dislike symphonic power metal or modern pop or country music, but i really do feel like even those genres take more effort.

so, you're saying that because I like the residents and captain beefheart and swans, i should like noise? No.. because those 3 artists have musical talent and imagination.

noise is for people who cannot play the piano like an evolved human being, so they bought a synthesizer and are disguising their lack of talent with their interpretations of neanderthal music.

why do people assume that music that doesn't follow verse-chorus-verse structures or use guitar, drums, bass, synths, vocals is automatically troll music if they don't like how it sounds? seriously, for all the accusations of elitism and pretentiousness thrown at people who listen to music forms like EAI, noise, onkyo, etc., it seems to me that people who dismiss entire genres after listening to a single album from said genres are the actual pretentious people. i've also never ever ever ever heard an actual noise fan (like, invested in the scene, listening to a variety of noise music) describe their attraction to the music as primarily an intellectual exercise. same goes for onkyo and EAI. it's just projection projection projection from Reddit posters and teenagers who caught sight of the Pulse Demon or Good Morning Good Night cover and decided to queue it one random day between TPAB and OK Computer and then they're shocked that they don't get anything out of it and convince themselves that people who like it must be lying as opposed to the more difficult truth: their sonic palette isn't very wide yet because they're just starting to get into music or have been into it for awhile but are stuck in a very specific niche and it's easier to just tell everyone outside their niche that they're only there to posture.

news for all these people: people like classical, jazz, eai, onkyo, musique concrete, noise, field recordings, etc. not for ~le obscurity and intellectualism~ but because they like the sounds

I don't like that much HNW, however:

For me, noise is about "grabbing" different textures, notes, etc. out of the noise, noticing how songs change slowly over time, and getting used to feeling comfortable with noises that are otherwise uncomfortable.

The idea that it's tuneless is kind of bullshit. Sure, some is, but I would say some noise has a key -- even if the key isn't as clear as a lot of classical music, or rock, or whatever.

I don't see how the fact that "anyone can make it" means its bad. Who cares how much talent someone does or doesn't have, if you enjoy the music?

I think country, as a genre, pretty much blows, but I don't think people are "pretending" to like it.

It'd be much easier to like folk, punk, alt., etc. I could chat with people about more bands, and probably go to more shows I enjoy, so the idea that /most/ people who like noise are pretending is fucking weird.

I will say most noise is fucking terrible, but honestly, most music of any genre is fucking terrible.

The aesthetics associated with noise can be juvenile at times, but oh well. Some of its cool.

I think you're right. I think there are a lot of youngsters in this thread who have been seriously listening to music for only a few years. I'm listening to Kibako - Merzbow for the first time rn and it's sweet. I've never been into noise before but I think it's sad so many people are attacking it.

I have a lot of friends who love music, but they pretty much are stuck into a handful of genres -- they just don't have the audacity to claim that people that enjoy X thing are actually just pretending.

What a fucking effort that would be. Most people that claim to like something, (whether its music or anything else), genuinely do like it. Why are people so conspiratorial?

Teens these days have access to the internet and move onto noise and other edgy forms of music almost as soon as they get into music.

These are the same people that would have been listening to Disturbed, ICP, Cradle Of Filth etc.. if they had been around in the 90s/early 2000s. It really is just rooted in immature angst.

What could possibly be more pseuo-intellectual than

>muh formless arrhythmic distorted white noise that discards all ideas of desirable music

I mean it's cool if sometimes you like to tune the radio to a dead station and take a break from normal listening, but following artists and buying albums of this shit is fucking retarded. It's like blending random inedible ingredients and calling it progressive cuisine that transcends established expectations of culinary structure and taste.
>>
>>61046637
Except Noise doesn't pretend to be 'progressive' or 'transcendent'. The opposite even. That's the whole point.

If you're pretending that Myth of Blood, Frozen Niagara Falls, Abyss of Longing Throats, and Tribulation all have the same atmosphere or mood because they're all noise albums, then you're just not listening.

I do agree, though, that 'pure' noise (i.e. one wall of static) is boring. Noise is a tool, not a genre. Some just utilise it more than others.

This is everything that's wrong with modern art. I'm an experimental musician myself, but this reductionist garbage is what leads to the mountains of effortless shit that is noise music.

It's not the fucking 1920s anymore DADA principles are extremely outdated and corny.

Yeah because we aren't fucking spergs who willingly listen to and categorize random stimuli devoid of meaning. There are a lot of things in life that you can't write off after just a few minutes, but noise music is conceptually retarded and you don't have to repeat-listen multiple albums and artists to figure that out.

Most noise music, even a lot I enjoy, I would not consider art. The artlessness of noise is a lot of its appeal to me really. It's sound without pretention, can be taken at face value, for what it is and for its own sake (In the same vein as field recordings). That's a welcome change sometimes.

I have always considered music to be the most entry-level of the arts. It can be appreciated by a 6 year old, provided he or she is not deaf. The experiences of Proper Literature do not come so easily. One does not simply understand a man as cryptic as Ahab or Raskolnikov. Yet, anyone can play a little Mozart or Bach in the background as they eat their Spaghettios. Music hardly requires attention. It demands virtually nothing of one's cognitive abilities. Such cannot be said for the rewards offered by Finnegan's Wake or Borges' Ficciones.

Novels are too constrained by rules and form. I prefer reading gibberish books, I find that random assortments of letters really cleanse the palate. There are so many different textures to pick apart, some authors use mostly vowels to create an atmosphere while others work exclusively in consonants. It's so primal.

Anyway, who cares how much talent an author has? Just look at the letters on the page and enjoy the literature.

Art that makes us question what is art is the cheapest, most bullshit 'art' to make. Literally anyone can gain this through doing anything and saying 'yeah but it could be art lol'
Making us question the definition of a word too ambiguous to live shouldn't be a justification for its existence
