It's interesting how the quality of the albums without Deakin are much better than the one's he's not on.

the thing about deakin is that he is the intended audience for animal collective's music, which is why he tends to take fringe roles like production and only contributes to the actual musicianship infrequently. deak is the guy with patrician tastes the rest of the band is trying to impress as a litmus test for their new music.
MPP was a great album specifically because the thought process was "what kind of pop album would deakin enjoy?"

This is the worst conclusion to make. Just because he was on CHZ after the release of MPP doesn't make him the weak link. I don't think there is a weak link in AC. The dude was on SJ and Feels, two of their all time best. Also Campfire Songs which is severely underrated and also the Other Music Acoustic show and the Noah's Ark performance, both insanely great.
His genius is best shown at the Glasslands show where they played Oddsac songs for the first and only time live
