Am I the only one who thinks essay films like this and Baraka are some of the most pleb tier shit being passed off as patrician? They both convey simple as fuck ideas, but because there are no "words" it's artistic. Well the ideas don't interest me and the camera work is dog shit. If you're going to do something like this say something interesting, not something simplistic that you can say in a sentence in a five minute short clip.

Except they're not being passed off as patrician.

I think you have a point. That struck me especially with Samsara, it's almost childish in the ideas it conveys. But then again it's a pleasure to watch and listen, so I still really like them

Absolutely love this one, it's one of my favorites.

What's your idea of a deep film? If you get into more experimental film you sure as hell won't find too many ideas packaged into a single movie.

It's not so much about what has been made as much as it's about what I think could and should be made. The idea of a film that conveys ideas only through images is great, but the problem is what we get in almost all of the ones I have seen is a very shallow idea conveyed like "the world is beautiful and dangerous" or "nature contrast with these city scapes harshly" no shit dumbasses. Fantasia already trumped most of these movies and student films with the same fucking idea seventy years ago.

What I'd like to see with one of these films is them take an idea that is hard/complicated to show with words and make a movie out of it. There are a lot of philosophical and scientific ideas that are hard to just tell people about through exposition that would be great for this. There also many political and lifestyle experiences that could be conveyed through this type of film that can only really be shown emotionally as images. I see a lot of possibilities and potential for this type of film and for animation in the same regard that just never seems to be fulfilled.

you can blame the studio/distribution system for that, it pretty much ensures that anything that is too complicated to pitch in 30 seconds will never make it to theaters

The obvious choice but it needs to be said

There is no narrative how is it shallow? I think it is more geared towards form and aesthetics of nature/man but feel that it's open ended enough that you can project these larger complicated ideas you speak of into the movie.

What's a movie you like that comes close to this complicated type of narrative?

They aren't Essay Films, an Essay film is something that blurs documentary with actual filmed segments, like F For Fake and The Thin Blue Line

>wasn't even nominated for an oscar that year
>lost every year he got nominated
>only got a consolation oscar late in his career

so fucking unfair...

This guy thinks Koyaanisqatsi has bad camera work. Never before have I seen such blatant bait. Blaitant.

I got sick of pan shots and landscapes a long time ago. I bet you think the Searchers was a good film lel.
>>
>>61013823
The Searchers is very bland (even compared to contemporary westerns) but most every shot was very well composed, only Night Of The Hunter really competes with it from american films from the same era and I would say is actually better in that regard. Although Night Of The Hunter is also not that engaging outside of the visuals and the scenes before the kids leave the town.
