Scaruffi gave Moondance an 8.5/10 but I thought it sucked.

Astral Weeks is a masterpiece however

It's not.

Vendon Fleece is essential, Into the Music, Summertime in England, Listen to the Lion.

Moondance is really good. His late '70s and early '80s records are great. "Summertime in England" is a real jam.

Astral Weeks has been my favourite album of all time for ages, but quite embarrassingly I only recently learned that he'd released any more albums
I hadn't even bothered to look because for some reason I guess I must have managed to got him and Nick Drake muddled up in my head or something, I was absolutely certain that he'd released Astral Weeks as his only studio album and then committed suicide a short while after
Now that I've learned how wrong that was I've been considering getting into his other work but I can't see any other album living up to the ridiculously high expectations that Astral Weeks has given me

Probably a coincidence.

This, however...

And it's not even just the cover art he nicks.

Astral Weeks isn't THAT good. If it wasn't for the instrumentation and a competent backing band it would be pretty weak imo. The song forms are simple and meandering and Van's lyrics on that album are kinda nonsensical to me, and I'm pretty sure I've read interviews where he admitted this himself.

Just about every British rock star at that point had bought a house in the country and was pretending to be rustic gentleman farmer
