mostly; the first ~3 hours were an ocean of serenity and peace; we went out exploring the neighborhood at night and it was one of the most simultaneously beautiful and alienating things I've experienced. as if we were walking through a snow globe and everything was bright and vibrant and intense.
later on I did experience some serious existential doubt but looking back that was a mind-blowing experience on itself.
All in all an A+ experience, would recommend to everyone.

normally i'm up to bump the threads on friday nights but last night i tried to take a quick nap at like 9 and then woke up at 7

but review!

Yes - Fragile (1971)
>progressive rock

I love the tracklisting of this album. Unlike most prog albums, not everything on here is a 10 minute epic. Only a third of the songs here are over 5 minutes long, and this is to the albums benefit. "Roundabout", "South Side of the Sky", and "Heart of the Sunrise" are the albums opener, middle, and closer, and in between these long tracks are short little interlude, "filler" pieces. And shockingly, these interludes are very nice, flouncy and a bit quirky in nature, and they don't overstay their welcome. But the epics are where this album truly shines, specifically the funky, bass-driven "Roundabout" and the /phenomenal/ "Heart of the Sunrise" (that riff). "South Side of the Sky" is a bit overblown though, and I could do without Anderson's super-prog vocals. Also Chris Squire was the fucking best bass player of all time, holy shit.

I just bought this compilation called Anthology of noise & electronic music which apparently have unreleased stuff from Sonic Youth, Ryoji Ikeda, Pauline Oliveros and others so it looks cool.

Definitely a vaporwave album that left me with mix feelings. Some of the tracks work, great use of samples and has certain grooves that left me chill. But there are other tracks were the same application of chop n' screw samples are not clearly working and feel forced or the artist is clearly taking the piss. Giving this an five because its neither good nor bad, just mixed up and everywhere to the point it feels average.

>Deja Entendu
Yep, that's pop punk. But it's good pop punk. I thought those 2 were antonyms but this album's proved me wrong. Even if some of the tracks are so predictable I already knew the choruses 10 seconds in this is a very well executed album. The production's dark and slick but not overbearing, the lyrics are the darkest and most varied of the 3 releases I've heard and every melody and riff gets stuck in your head immediately.
>The Devil and God
Well, Jesus's probably the best track off this chart so far. Such a perfect amalgamation of everything emo should be, it's sappy, self pitying, has a gorgeous achingly sad guitar lead and turns an already sympathetic break-up song into a spiritual drama. And that stands for most of the rest of the album save some weak overly clean production.
>Daisy
Basically The Devil and God but not as good and a bit more noisy and edgy

This double CD of electronic music contains some major works (Pierre Schaeffer, Iannis Xenakis, Edgard Varèse, Henri Pousseur, Konrad Boehmer, Luigi Rossolo...), a few rarities (John Cage, Nam June Paik, Gordon Mumma, Walter Ruttman...) and plenty of previously unrealeased material (Sonic Youth, Einsturzende Neubauten, dj Spooky, Ryoji Ikeda, Pauline Oliveros, Angus MacLise, Philip Jeck, Survival Research Laboratory...).

I second those hip hop recs. Public Enemy is actually slightly more impressive if you've listened to a decent amount of hip hop beforehand. The lyricism, rhyming, and flow are all so amazing and dynamic. The Chuck-Coltrane comparisons, while basic, are honestly not too far off. The production is also great, but it's definitely fairly outdated, and occasionally implements irritating noises and samples.

>maybe they'll resurrect my faith in hip-hop
Honestly, they might actually make the rest of hip-hop seem kinda lame by comparison.

Godspeed You! Black Emperor - FA∞

I had never really been much into Godspeed You Black Emperor, I had heard LYSF and while I was impressed with parts of it, I also felt like much of the album dragged on too much and I lost interest in LYSF after a little while. FA∞ renewed that interest with a deep passion, not only was it better than LYSF (imo) but it was also one of the best albums I've heard so far on this chart. I absolutely loved the industrial, apocalyptic themes they had going on here. I listened to the CD version luckily and not the vinyl one. I may listen to the vinyl one at some point just to compare but I really truly feel as if the CD version is great enough itself. 9/10

>Morton Feldman - For Philip Guston (California EAR Unit)
>Morton Feldman - String Quartet No. 2 (Fluxus Quartet)

So I've listened to each of these twice, and god damn, if Philip Guston isn't a 10. (String Quartet is probably a 9.) With For Philip Guston, I was really surprised how interesting such a long-form and sparse composition can be, and it was very cool to listen to both times. The first I listened when studying, and then I tried giving it a more dedicated listening (albeit while still studying for something else) and I loved it both times.

I did the same for String Quartet No. 2, and that was also amazing. I thought by now I'd be getting tired of the way string quartets tend to sound, but this album really blew me away. Feldman produced a lot of strange sounds and the instruments always work together so nicely, despite the minimalist composition. The only problem I have with this piece is that it tends to hang on to tension a little too long, almost to the point of inducing some sort of mild anxiety. That, and six hours is definitely pushing how long I can listen to something in one sitting. I doubt I could even find time to listen to this thing in one sitting.

Both these albums have so many great moments, and I definitely plan to listen to them again for future studying, maybe even give them dedicated listens at some point. God damn.

Sorry if the writing is more terrible than usual, btw. I'm tired as hell.

What next

>>60990474
F#A#∞ is so much more interesting and varied than LYSF, yet has a very meticulously crafted atmosphere. Love that album. I have a copy on vinyl too, and while the digital track listing is far superior, the packaging for the record is probably the best I've ever seen for $19.

Didn't listen to a whole lot this week and I didn't feel like writing anything about it until now.

>NxWorries(Knxwledge & Anderson .paak) - Link Up & Suede
As the simple but effective title suggests this thing contains the tracks Link Up and Suede. Suede has been one of my go-to songs for when I'm with normal people and I can really vibe to it. Link Up was released a few days before the EP and it's not bad either. As expected from Paak it's soulful, it's groovy, it's 'cool'. I'm not really feeling that beat though. The drums, the bass and the backing vocals are chill, but Knwledge sprinkled the song with random noises that make no sense on a track like this whatsoever.
Besides these two tracks there's a remix of Paak's Drugs song. It's a lot better than the trappy original and it's probably the best thing on this EP. The other three songs are really bad filler songs with some references to songs from AP's earlier projects.
If it just had the three real songs I would've appreciated the EP a thousand times more. I'll still be bumping Suede and Droogs when with friends, but fuck that filler.
2/5

>Lubomyr Melnyk - Rivers and Streams
On Melnyk's previous albums (the ones i heard at least) his focus seemed to be completely on the overtones and the speedy playing. I liked these albums, but i never really cared for how fast Melnyk is able to play.
On this album Melnyk sort of shifted away from the thousand notes per minute and I loved that. His music is more melodious and it's more peaceful. There might be less notes, but every single note has a bigger, more calculated impact. He still plays around with the acoustic properties of his piano, but it's no longer what his music is all about. There's more to it and I love that.
The way he integrated a guitar into Sunshimmers makes his collaborative album with James Blackshaw seem weak in comparison. The guitar became notes blended in with the piano notes into the sea of resonance.
This was v good

Honestly idk what you're hoping to accomplish by asking that, but here's a short list of some of my favorite EPs:
>Glenn Branca - Lesson No. 1
>GY!BE - Slow Riot for New Zero Kanada
>Pere Ubu - Datapanik in Year Zero
>Urinals - Flowers Dead
>Butthole Surfers - s/t
>Lil Ugly Mane - Uneven Compromise

I feel like I'm forgetting something important. Boredoms have a couple of good EPs? MBV? idk

>Vincent Le Masne & Bertrand Porquet - Guitares Dérive
This was actually a little similar to Blackshaw's journeys into minimalism, but it lacks the cool transitions JB makes between two streams of repetition. This has some interesting motifs, but it's just repetitions of these motifs stringed together with nothing in between.
p boring
2/5

>Madlib & Hemlock Ernst - Trouble Knows Me
There's three songs with raps on them and three instrumental ones.
Madlib's instrumentals are alright as always, but they're nothing close to his best.
The second track cuts off at a weird moment
The singing/rapping on the third one is cool. Ernst should stick to that style.
Skits seem pointless and completely unrelated to the raps.
"I feel dread like a rasta" really?
I feel like Hemlock Ernst is doing good impressions of rappers I've never heard.

A Tribe Called Quest - The Low End Theory (1991)
>jazz rap, east coast hip hop, conscious hip hop

Tribe do the laid back NY style really well, but its not a style I'm completely sold on yet. The beats are great, that's no lie. The use of acoustic instruments is great and really comfy, and the production does a great job of allowing this instrumentation to interlock with the rapping, not interfere with it. But my problem here lies with the rapping. In my opinion, Q-Tip and Phife Dawg are not that good at their craft, specifically Phife's flow is rather awkward and his voice just doesn't suit the music very well. And I also have to knock the album for the generally repetitive nature of the beats, all the drum tracks sound nearly identical. But all in all, its still a good record.

3.0-

Fleetwood Mac - Rumours (1977)
>pop rock, soft rock

Well fuck me, its not completely insipid. When the band goes full soft-wuss-rock, its fucking sublime, like honestly. "Go Your Own Way" and "Dreams" are absolutely gorgeous pieces of well-produced pop perfection. But then sometimes the band tries to go standard classic rock, reintroducing some of their blues rock roots. And these parts are just pretty godawful, not gonna lie. But those two songs, dear god.

Had a Star Wars marathon yesterday, which was fun. From 12:00 to 03:00, fifteen hours of watching film; only me and two girls were actually present the whole time from start to finish. A few weaklings dropped off after three or four films, and a couple of guys arrived late.

Good morning, /daily/, what's everyone up to?

OKC just felt like more regular alt rock to me, similar to Pablo Honey and The Bends. However, I actually liked Kid A, I really liked some of the more experimental bits, like Treefingers. The rest of the albums are more like this, right?

Wow, I must recommend this one - Discrét Night Signals. It's my favourite of the month so far, the range of influences here, how they're blended, and what they end up prophesying. It's an album that makes you think of the big night city in the way Deepchord and Burial do, with fluid electronic pulses and little dusts of field recordings - but what makes this different from other standard urban ambience is that it's actually incredibly abstract and kaleidoscopic. One track will be a thickly brewed lo-fi beat, another will divide its movements into something that would fit snugly onto a Gas record, another puts Aphex Twin and a fuller, filmier bass into the same pot. There's so many ideas and sides, but they all naturally segue under the same urban overtone, falling beautifully into different tiles on the mosaic. The best part for me is how it works as a kind of missing link. The feelings of futurism, disjointedness, abstractness, low fidelity and nostalgia are all here and work in harmony, and no doubt Vektroid looked to this release when she whipped up Floral Shoppe.

No, this is great. Such a shame this is as overlooked as it is. I can't wait to sink into it some more. I can detect extra influences coming from Gas, Woob, Tetsu Inoue, DJ Sprinkles and a range of others. This is an exciting barrel of ideas.

>Księżyc - Rabbit Eclipse
20 years after their legendary first album, Księżyc finally release a new record. The band use the same base material : ghostly vocals, accordion, clarinet. However, this time, instead on doing pastoral, American minimalism and medieval influenced music, the band focus more on drone and unsettling atmospheres. The result is more polished and no less enchanting, still being a celebration of life and nature. The voices are much less present than on their s/t unfortunately, although each of their appearance are definitely a highlight.

Prog is honestly the corniest, most boring, least poignant, most cliched, most devoid of artistic or creative merit of any genre

Hope you enjoy, it's basically just really laid back, hazy psychdelic folk pop. Nice tastes btw, best Cave, Beach Boys and Faust records, I'm gonna check out the stuff I haven't heard off your chart

Otis Redding - Otis Blue: Otis Redding Sings Soul (1965)
>deep soul, southern soul

Redding's voice lacks polish and finesse, but that's what makes this album works. And the incredible arrangements and underrated guitar work. AND EVERYTHING ELSE. A little more variety would've been nice, and the cover of "Satisfaction" falls a bit flat, but this it top-tier soul.

The show was so horrific that it actually managed to depress me a bit. Strange.

Writing a new album now. Might post my review of Ready For The House in a couple of minutes because that's the only thing I listened to today and I am not in the mood to listen to anything else.

I just got back from a concert of Italian romanze from the '800 and it was pretty good, the tenor and the piano were great, while the soprano was a little bit too average. I liked it except for the fact that it was in a coffee and I had to pay 3€ for a fucking coffee what the fuck bourgeois.
I also finally listened to Rites Of Spring and it was ptty good too, will review tomorrow because I'm too tired now

>Jandek - Ready For The House

I think it was always that first strum. Just a single sound grabbed me like nothing else and sent me on the journey through the mind of Sterling Smith. Ready For The House has been one of my favourite records of all time to this day for several simple reasons that I will try to explain in this review.

First of all, I was raised with the blues. It really stands out to me because the genre wasn’t always about pursuing fame or chasing the ladies. It was a way to express emotional a state of sadness, very often absolute despair. The main shtick was that the people who had something to say weren’t always musical geniuses in the conventional sense of the word. All they had was 2-3 chords, their voice and, most importantly, their story. Now how effective the story is delivered to the listener and with what means is what matters to me the most. Words (Dark Was the Night, Cold Was the Ground) and the instrumental accompaniment (Grinnin' In Your Face) aren’t always necessary if the overall sound is strong enough to deliver the message. This is exactly what Jandek did in my eyes. He stripped down blues to that absolute core and made a record. The guitar sounds ugly. The vocals sound careless and upsetting, even though they do feature very bleak positive glimpses from time to time. Even at first I did think that the components sounded absolutely awful but it really makes sense. What else would represent the accurate state of depression if not a simple atonal pluck paired up with very passive vocal performance?

That brings me to the next anchor of the album: the lyrics. They develop the image of the narrator very well. A man that is filled with boredom of everyday life. He spends his time looking back at his past and searching for his future. Smith presents us with a rather atypical raw acoustic blues character: a middle-class man. Instead of the financial emptiness, he faces the emptiness of his soul. Mundane living, a loss of self, “staring at the cellophane”. The latter and several other phrases on the record are looked upon as the key of understanding this “Jandek” guy because of the constant line recycling in his further works. All of these chosen phrases share the same concept of blank confusion. In addition to the standard narration in his poetry of loss, Jandek emphasises on surreal imagery and omittance of the key details that are crucial to the understanding of the story. Sometimes he just doesn't mention who the the subject of his story, replacing it with the ambiguous and frustrating “you”. Ominous stories about someone unknown and that’s not even the whole picture. The vocal delivery from the Corwood Representative enhance these stories with the same exact bleakness that just forces you to give in.

Moving on to the guitar. Yes, it is nowhere near the standard tuning. It is also very dissonant. I think one of the most important bits of his guitar playing is the rhythm. The variations of the same damn tuning on this album alone is something I love, not to mention the lengths of ways he expands his technique over the other entries in the Corwood catalog. He builds up from nothing but strumming an open chord in this godawful tuning that features certain offsets of 4 strings, tuned to an approximate E. It is as ugly as the emotional state of the narrator. I am still very interested in what Smith’s guitar sounded like prior to this album. Sterling claims to have acquired his first guitar around approximately 1969-70 so he had solid 8 years to learn “how to play” the guitar. It’s fascinating.

The final detail of the album I would like to discuss is the final track. European Jewel is an incomplete version of a track that is very different from anything else the album presents. A relative standard tuning on an electric guitar with distinguishable chords is a spark in the mundane world of the album. It is a breath of a fresh air that Sterling immediately cuts off, just as you get invested into the lyrical content. He just ends it midway through. I think it is an effective way to prepare the listeners to what the future releases will bring to them. Tons of puzzled frustration and complete loss that somehow manages to drag you back into the wilderness of Smith’s playground.

This all being said, Sterling Smith definitely has a great sense of humor. Behind all these tiresome verses there is always this tongue in cheek sensation. Maybe this is all literally a guy strumming guitar to see what he can get away with. Maybe it is all a huge elaborate ruse by a guy whose life got boring all of a sudden. A lot of his future tracks openly mess around with the listener and I’m positive that he does the same on here too. It’s just that at times all the worlds he creates are just too hypnotizing to even worry about things like that. Are these worlds scary? Only if you are scared to see yourself in the same exact bland world that Jandek paints out for you. It’s nothing but a visual distortion you experience when you stare at the world behind the cellophane.

The Flaming Lips - The Soft Bulletin (1999)
>neo-psychedelia, psychedelic pop

In which an absolutely spectacular track opens up an album of mostly mediocrity. And the version of the opener used as the actual opener is the inferior version (what the fuck is the point of the remixes? they're brickwalled to hell and back). But "Race for the Prize" and "Waitin' for a Superman" are still great songs, its just a shame that the rest of the album consists of generally poor or uninspired melodies trying to hide the fact that they're poor and uninspired by putting an absolute shit-ton of uneccesary and overblown instrumentation on top of them. I like layering in my pop music (i mean, spector), but this shit gives me a headache (so does Person Pitch, which suffers from this as well). Meh, Clouds Taste Metallic is better.
