What are some Tom Waits essentials? So far I've heard and loved the fallowing:
Alice
Mule Variations
Bone Machine
Frank's Wild Years
Rain dogs
Swordfishtrombones
Small Change
Closing Time
What else is essential? What's next on the great Waits shopping list!
Orphans and Heart of Saturday Night. After that you have all the Waits you'll ever need

This, Black Rider is GOAT in my opinion. It's like Wait's version of SMiLE.
The Heart of Saturday Night is probably top 3 for me. Even if his early material isn't your favorite period of his, it's still an essential.
I'd say Orphans and Blue Valentine OP
Pretty much everything including and after Swordfishtrombones.
But my top three albums are
>Orphans
>Black Rider
>Mule Variations
Try and name a bad Tom Waits album.
Just try, see, you can't.

The Heart of Saturday Night

Oh god oh man oh god... Umm umm umm. The Heart of Saturday Night has stronger writing. Blue Valentine is great but the Waits perfected this kinda style on Rain Dogs.

Blue Valentine is patchy yo HoSN
the banter on this is amazing.
Invitation to the Blues - 1977 bootleg with just a piano, upright bass, and drums. Got me into the wild beast that is Tom Waits, and is a fantastic cross-section of his work at that time.

His version of Phantom 309 is perfect.
