Essential non-entry level Jap music?
Already listened to Fishmans, Boris, Nujabes, Merzbow, Melt Banana, city pop, YMO, Kimonos, etc. all the basic shit. What's some good lesser-known stuff from there?
>>60954430
Funny you should ask that since in pretty much every genre I can think of Japanese music is vastly inferior to other nations'. If you're going to narrow your music search geographically, you will probably gain much more fulfillment by focusing on countries with great musical cultures such as Iceland, Italy, Denmark, etc.
>>60954430
Galneryus
Check out Kinoko Teikoku, Parkgolf, and Ichiko Aoba. Don't know if that's obscure enough...
>>60954478
This is true, Japanese music is essentially Western music, but 10 years too late

Japan ahead of the game in noise but otherwise you're pretty much right. Stuff from their is is still p. good.
Also Iceland only has like ten bands.

It's western music with a subtle difference that's hard to pinpoint.

Some stuff here that I enjoy (and note that the title is a joke, not all of the stuff is avant-garde)
Some other people and I are organizing Japanuary as well, where we'll be listening to a Japanese album every day and discussing it in general threads. Might wanna participate in that, if you feel so inclined
i know pierro has a page called "japanese space-rock" somewhere. dont ask me to fish it out for you.
>>60954430
If you're interested in chiptune I'd recommend artists related to the groundzero organization (ie Hizmi, Utabi) and Saitone

I dunno I've just been real into learning about Japan's history/culture recently (not because of anime or waifus) and I've been liking a lot of their artists that I've heard although some of it is kinda kitschy desu.
>Iceland
do they have a lot of stuff beyond Bjork/Of Monsters and Men/Sigur Ros? its a small population

Heard them, good stuff. Sound a lot like Neil Young at some points.

>>60954565
I would also say it improves on certain genres, or at least creates a distinct meld. If you really enjoy a particular genre and want a top tier reconstruction of it, Japan can be the way to go.
Oftentimes foreign music that co-opts American music is shit, but in Japan it's decidedly not always shit

Yeah Iceland has plenty. I've been surprised over and over at how a nation of only 300k has so much good music. I've only scratched the surface but I've found great progressive folk rock stuff from the 70s, excellent black metal and crust punk, an interesting underground dance music scene, and a really compelling folk music tradition in addition to that stuff.

It's not offensive to me. I actually giggled a bit, but Nip is basically out of the lexicon. It's some 60 year old kinda slur.
Also Japan hasn't suffered anything more then most other european countries, and they've definitely inflicted alot of suffering as well. Korea probably gets the 'most victimized Asian nation' award.
>>60958022
I'm referring to the other video you linked. Solanin also has a bunch of views on another upload. Anyway, AKFG has some singles I enjoy a lot, but every time I listen to an album, I'm disappointed. Have they released one good -album-?
>>60958036
Oh well then if I'm not mistaken but wouldn't "&" only be used in a pair such as "Greg & Son Co.", whereas in your context "and" is the proper use (or is it different in American English, I'm not from America)? But none of that's important, sorry for the misunderstanding. At least OP can check them out if s/he hasn't yet.
>>60958075
I'm not sure if you might find a complete album by them really good. I mean I'm a fan, so I find the majority of their works good, but if you'd like me to find a good overall album, I can try.
Could you tell me what albums you've already listened to by them? So I can get an idea on where to start?

Okay then, well I'm glad we could get that little misunderstanding out of the way.
I've noticed their style kinda changes from album to album gradually. While still maintaining the over all familar sound, so I'll set you up with one of their new songs. See what you think, I feel it's fairlydifferent to their pre-2010 stuff, but again familar,

How much fucking time do you neets have that you know this much japanese music? It's fucked in the head. I can listen to music, but not 10 hours a day, holy fuck, how do you actually filter out what you like when forcing yourself to listen to shit. Fuck this board, you all make me feel literally sick with how shitty your lives are.

Are you literally retarded? Do you understand the concept of time? Why are you talking like we've all only just started listening to these band in the past week and have done nothing but listen to their albums? This is stuff that we've built up over months and years. Fuck, your post seriously doesn't even make sense.
I'm not sure if they've been mentioned in this thread yet, but one of the most underrated Japanese bands in my opinion is Maher Shalal Hash Baz - they make interesting and very varied avant-folk music with a naivist approach.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_hQXztTgVTM
If you like it, you should also check out the solo stuff by band members Reiko Kudo and Tori Kudo, and the album they recorded under the name Noise.

Does any link exist for their final project?

Akiro Suzuki is the obvious one (Altough I think he might have been born in North Korea before moving to and living in Japan)
can't go wrong with this album, got me into this awesome band. their 2007 release is very different in style but it's also great.

For tricot fans:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9pdJ7VMGpPI
translation:
Introduction:
Ikkyuu - Vocalist, Nakajima Ikkyuu. My charm point is that if I don't care my eyebrows, they will connect into one.
Motifour - Guitar & Chorus, Kida Motifour. My charm point is that my eyes are like corpses.
Host: Why "Motifour"?
Motifour: Well, I'm rather usually called "Senpai". (Text on the screen, Motifour was Ikkyuu's senpai in High School)
Ikkyuu: That's right, she was my high school senpai. Well, everyone calls her senpai,
Host: "Motifour" sounds like a habitual unused name. *laughs*
Hiromi: Bass & Chorus. Hiromi Hiro Hiro. My charm point is that my teeth are protruding. *laughs*
Host: Hahaha you three, do you even know what "charm" means?
Hiromi: Yes, my teeth are protruding.
Ikkyuu: She has one excessive tooth.
Hiromi: Yes. This fang I have. This tooth is protruding too much.
Host: That's many. *laughs*
Narration: Rather than their charm points, they've introduced their embarrassing points.
After that, some big fan intrude the studio.
tricot's age: Ikkyuu (25), Motifour (26), Hiromi (26)
tricot was formed on Sept 2010.
tricot's history:
Ikkyuu: before tricot, I was doing solo (as Nakajima Ikumi) and support roles. Met Motifour often for guitar sessions. Then I invited her to tricot. Then she asked who will do the bass. We decided on Hiromi since she was the most eager.
Host: How did you meet?
Hiromi: When I was in a band before tricot, In that band (RINSUKE), Kida-san (motifour) attended our concert, yes a viewer, she was an avid fan. (laughts). After that, we connected.
Host: and so how did she capture your attention?
Motifour: I loved her bass phrasing. I was thinking if she could play the bass for us.
Host: Yeah, when Nishidai (the big fan) saw tricot live, he said to me that the bassist Hiro Hiro has the same size of my own bass. So I though, my bass is THIS big. When I saw her, rather than heavy, it's so big for her!

Sakamotos solo work is leagues better than Yura Yura. They get way too jammy, and not in a good avant garde LRD way.
