I can understand those complaints; both can be pretty hit or miss and monotonous sometimes. I think I just have a soft spot for the weirder side of post rock. Btw if you like Bedhead, have you heard their collab with Macha? Two of my favorite bands and the album is pretty good.

It's not the musical style that Tortoise takes from its how they function and structure their music.
A lot of long prog tracks tend to do this thing where they just have several different segments of music in the track that usually build up to a climax of some sort.
Just listen to Yes - Close to the Edge, you'll see what I mean.
