fripp is good by rock standards (which are pretty low), but you need to get schooled on jazz guitar OP

I don't know, Guthrie Govan? Or is this memes?

I love Wes, but I don't thing he was as innovative, Fripp created a style and sound that was never heard before

kind of the same thing as above

>>60941547
I'm retarded? :( why though? Doesn't Guthrie make some sweet tunes? And he plays fast a lot but doesn't sound like a wanker or that he's trying too hard. I'm not trying to argue or anything I'm just curious because Guthrie is such a cool dude
>>
>>60941124
Take your pick

I'll give Fripp the upper hand on soundscapes(Frippertronics), but that's it.
>>
>>60941650
I love Guthrie, and his music is sweet, but look at how King Crimson's early albums basically helped to define the sound of early prog, then in the 80's they came out with a sound that was somewhere between Talking Heads and Math Rock (a genre that was not even invented yet)
People have been trying to copy King Crimson for ever but KC is always one step ahead.
I just mean that Guthrie has not done anything on that level yet

P4P best guitarist ever

If he won the hearts of perfectionist freaks like Zappa and Fripp, then he must be THAT good.

Easy. Steve Howe is more technical, more innovative, all around more skilled and plays in the same genre.
>>
Frank Zappa
>>
who gives a fuck
>>
>>60944688
Steve Howe might be my favorite guitarist but I don't know if I would call him innovative, esp. compared to Fripp

he writes really imaginative guitar parts, but they're mostly blends of jazz, country, and classical guitar cliches. Fripp created a lot of sounds that are completely his own, a couple of which involved inventing a new technology.

I don't think innovation is valid if it's shit, though. Howe's work is solid and soulful, whereas Fripp always struck me as more scientist than guitarist. There's something cold and withdrawn about his playing that I find genuinely off-putting with a few exceptions.
>>
>>60945022
well, KC isn't for everyone. Fripp can be "soulful" when he wants, though

I love Belew. Really underrated guitarist. original sound, some solid solo work, but definitely worked best with Fripp when he was writing two guitar parts.
Also was awesome in Talking Heads.

Wes montgomery's tone was standard for jazz, but his technique was pretty much unseen asfaik (use of octaves/block chords, more movement up and down the neck, picking with his thumb)

John Schofield
Pat Metheny
early John Mclaughlin

Pat metheny, frank zappa, Mark lettieri, jeff beck, if we count flamenco guitar, most of them like paco de lucia or leo aurora are skilled and innovative

M8, Jack White's music has always been derivative. It's about as far from original or new as you can get. Not hating on him though. Just saying. Sure he comes up with some cool riffs and tones and shit but for the most part, what he does has already been done. A lot.

Of the two I'm partial to Tom Verlaine but I like Richard Lloyd's solo albums better.
>>
>>60947651
if you mean the name then sure, but the music is great

>>60947674
they complimented each other really well. lloyd's solos were definitely more rock-blues based and verlaine's were more jazz oriented

I take it you haven't listened to The Cheerful Insanity of Giles Giles and Fripp? Fripp's roots are in jazz guitar

Fripp's the man. seriously. i saw him live this year and he has a beautiful technique, playing the craziest riffs while his strumming hand draws fluid figure 8's

runs laps around fripp and I love robert. Frith has taken the guitars vocabulary further than anyone else. Would love to be proved wrong

The guitar work on Scary Monsters was pretty wanky.

Fashion kicked ass, but title track was noodling.

>>60947064

Anon doesn't realize the importance of Wes because so many of Wes's innovations are taken for granted now. He is by far the bigger innovator.

As much as I like him, I'm not sure if I would go that far. He's definitely in contention for that title though.
