benavente basses are the exact same market as alembic, active hippie sandwich basses

for guitars, the used market used to be full of alembic style guitars from the 70s years ago but it's dried up because they don't sell(the ibanez artist and musician series is still out there)

You're probably right I'm just looking at their site right now. Something special about Alembics is the in-house hardware, it seems all they Benavente use now is pre-fab stuff.

Alembic was founded in 1969. The first solid body electric guitar was in the late 70s. Forget who made it, thought it was Alembic for some reason.

Tuning stability, ease of maintenance, satisfying sound and a neck you like.

The first two you won't be able to figure out on your own (get the Telecaster)

they're not the only other company that does these types of instruments, they're not even the best actually. Conklin is best for extended range imo, and Dingwall is best for regular range. That being said, I don't dislike alembic for anything but their shitty business practices which go far beyond being way overpriced.
>>60932568
Ibanez made the first mass made solid 7, and there was a weird different 7 string patented by a guy in the 80s, but either way you're moving the goalposts because you originally said first 7 string. Not first solidbody 7
>>60932746
what's the most comfortable. If you're looking for a cheap new guitar they won't sound good, especially since you will have a cheap amp. play guitars in a shop, find the most comfortable one, and then google info on the neck(radius and scale length are the most important). buying used is much better than buying new as well
>>
>>60932799

>and there was a weird different 7 string patented by a guy in the 80s

>but either way you're moving the goalposts because you originally said first 7 string. Not first solidbody 7
It was a mistake in my first post. I typed first electric seven string, meant solid body electric seven.

Whelp I fucked up /gg/. I've been looking at the Æ’ender Rumble 75W for the last week or so. It was at a ridiculously low price - $179 for a 75W/12" bass combo.

Now it's gone, forever. Nobody seems to have them anymore. I never bought it. The best I can find for $179 is 20-30W 8"/10" amps. I don't want those amps anons I want the Rumble :[

Anon said he's unmotivated to practice. Perhaps he wants to skip the fundamentals and go straight to the fun. When I started out, I found sight reading exercises and rhythmical articulation pretty boring. Nothing "musical" about either of those but, in hindsight, I see the benefits.
>>
>>60933159
that's used, which means no warranty coverage. and it weighs 55lbs, so with shipping i'm paying more than retail for a used, unwarranteed, as-is item. ew, can't do it.

Doing the fundamentals definitely pays off, like in most fields. Learning the fundamentals of grammar and vocabulary might not be fun, but it's absolutely essential to being a good writer. Learning the basics of heat transfer and flavors might not be fun, but it's essential to being a good cook. I could go on. What motivates me is reminding myself that I will feel much more accomplished and fulfilled once I've learned to do it right.

So yesterday i asked about how to use headphones with my amp >>>60915924 and i tried the suggestion of plugging a dummy connector into Effects Return which did end up muting the speaker however it didn't work when i plugged my headphones into Effects Send (it was not muted and no sound came out of headphones).

Does this mean that i need some sort of mixer/interface in order to use headphones with my amp? Pls help. I'm a beginner and i'm trying to avoid destroying my headphones and amp while i try to get this working.

If i do need a mixer, is there one that will let me have both audio from my laptop and bass guitar coming out of the speaker at the same time? (As well as giving me the headphones option).
>>
>>60932781
If I were to get the telecaster, is the American Standard a good investment, or should I go cheaper? Not really looking to upgrade guitar down the line, but don't want to waste money either.
>>
>>60933393
honestly there's no good way to use headphones with that amp. yes, you can get a mixer or USB interface that can be connected via the direct output (DI) on the amp but you won't be able to mute the amp speaker while you do this.

also, there isn't going to be a proper way to get two signals (bass and "music") to go into that amp either. the very best you could do with a mixer is have the bass hooked up to it, music hooked up to it (each on a different fader) and have that go into the bass amp as a line out. the amp isn't designed to accept line level signals, and also the backing music track will be destroyed to hell anyway through the amp's overdrive and EQ, etc

normal "aux in" options on an amp don't send the signal through the bass amp electronics, and even if you did do that your bass would sound like crap mashed in with the music. it's not going to work anon, you won't be able to get the bass and music through that amp, and you absolutely won't be able to do headphones (unless you want your amp rumbling the whole time anyway).
>>
>>60933429
Different anon, MIM/MIJ/CIJ and yes, MIA are fine. Getting them used is preferable because "brand new" status is a fickle thing and a guitar's value usually depreciates at that point. Get them used though and you could sell it higher than what you bought it for if the one selling it to you gave you that sweet of a deal.

My two cents on this is to get anything that you like and will motivate you to play. I went with a used MIJ tele.
>>
>>60933429
>Not really looking to upgrade guitar down the line

Then yeah an American Standard is fine. MIM and CIJ Fenders are nice but often need some upgrades to be on the same level as an MIA
>>
>>60933429
not that anon, but if i were you i wouldn't spend more than a maximum of $300 on your first electric guitar

there's some squier telecasters that cost around that much, and i'm sure they're perfectly fine instruments. telecasters are pretty much the most simplistic (and best) design for guitars, it's pretty difficult for a company making them to fuck up manufacturing them.

don't worry about name brand bullshit

there was an anon in the last /gg/ thread that had problems with his epi les paul strap lock screws not fitting in the hole

i've fixed that in two ways. i used wood fill to fill in the holes in the body and let it dry, it takes about a day to get it set, then you just screw in the strap lock button. this way is a bit messy though because you need something to push the wood fill into the hole and pack it down so it's solid.

the other way i fixed it was i just jammed some tooth picks into the hole and just screwed the button on. make sure to cut the end of the toothpicks so they're not sticking out of the hole though.

the one with wood fill has been steady for like 7 years now, and the toothpick one has been steady for 3 years ever since i did it

Anon I think you should keep your current amp and cabinet and just buy some cheep crappy guitar amp for plugging external sources into. Doing this is so much easier than selling your rig and trying to find something else that'll do three jobs in one. It'll probably also end-up costing you more, nevermind the agravation.

I say:
1. keep your bass amp and cab. Love it, it's big and powerful and it has huge value, so what if it has no aux-in or HP option.
2. buy a little combo guitar or bass amp for <$100 that WILL have an external in and HP option. A 15W combo will get loud enough to do what you want playing an external source (using it as a mini PA) without mashing your bass through the same speaker. Plus you can use this little amp with the headphone option for practice etc. It all makes way more sense than fucking aorund trying to change everything and throw out a nice bass rig,

Currently using a BA 110 by ampeg as my at home practice amp. It's suprisingly loud and very clear at high volume. Future gigs will almost definitely be small areas, bars ect.

Should I focus on upgrading this to a higher tier amp or save up for a new bass? I have a '76 p bass but would like an American jazz bass.

Is true bypass way too over hyped? Am I losing anything noticeable in such a setup:

Gibson SG
Dunlop FFM1 Silicon Fuzz Face (True Bypass)
EQD Tentacle (True Bypass)
Dunlop GCB95 CryBaby Wah (Shitty-ish Bypass)
Boss OS-2 (Buffered Bypass)
Boss HM-2 (Buffered Bypass)
MXR M68 Uni-Vibe (Hardwire Bypass)
Amp Input
(Buffered) FX loop send
Boss PH-2 (Buffered Bypass)
MXR M169 Carbon Copy (Hardwire Bypass)
FX loop return

Is it worth it to get a dedicated buffer pedal or two and a true bypass looper? Or just get a small single (external) true bypass switch for the Wah since the Boss pedals are buffered?
FYI, amp is a Marshall Haze 40.

play guitar straight into amp, no pedals. then one by one add the oedals and play a bit, but keep a dry sound. then if you notice that your sound deteriorates you know theres a problem. if you cant here any difference youre fine.

i would say look into a mutli bypass board that loops your pedals.

I had a aqua puss, I thought it must have been the most overrated pedal I've ever bought. It's niche is short dark delays...which is I guess what you want for that slapback sound but basically, any delay can do slapback...personally I think digital delays sound much better with a sharp clear repeat than analog in that area....analog delays sound nice when the repeats are longer and have more feedback. I'd look at something like a CB belle epoch, or maybe one of the digital delays from Boss, those are cheap and plentiful used.

Just something with a lot more options on board when you get bored of slapback because that sound is so easy to get with very delay and just getting one (aqua puss) that kind of does only that area well is a waste
>>
>>60937579
I think it's very noticeable when you have maybe 3-5 pedals, gets less of an issue when you have a whole bunch of shit running all the time

basically it zaps the high end/presence and maybe a bit of high end gain...which is more annoying that it should be to deal with and isn't easily remedied by bumping the EQ after.

This is an Aria Pro II, and I think Ibanez and Yamaha did similar stuff in the late 70's with low impedance pickups and stuff, similar to Alembics.

theres vids on how to do that, you do only need a multimeter

some newer amps have a test point all set up, others don't and I think you have fuck around with some of the danger death ray caps

Hey /gg/
I'm relatively new to improvising, and I have to solo over
| Fm | Db | Bb | Bb |
in ~140 bpm rock. How would you go about that?
>>
>>60939175
Fm Pentatonic or melodic scale.

Change to Bb maj for the Bb chords, or are the suposed to be Bbm?

First off try and sing melodic lines over that chord progression - this will help give a more natural phrasing - then try and emulate this with your guitar.
>>
>>60939175
-you can play around in F minor diatonic and ut an emphisis on chord notes
-in Fm use minor pentatonic
-try and get phrases that start on one chord and end on another. This is harder than it seems bc you have to focus on notes that tell the listener that the new chord has arrived.
-Start slow and in positions close to the nut and build up speed while moving towards the bridge
>>
>>60939278
The chord is Bb major, not minor.
>Change to Bb maj for the Bb chords
Do you mean Bb major pentatonic?
>>
>>60939313
Yeah or Bb major scale (Ionian)
or try Bb Myxolydian
>>

Honestly depends what you want, if you want a variax setup then by all means use the POD (if you use the monitors live in place of a real amp/cab though it will sound like shit). But a HD500x sounds nowhere as good as an actual amp.

that one is going to be a bit difficult for a beginner to improvise over because the Bb is a borrowed chord from the parallel major F scale.

the only way you're going to actually sound "in" on that is to treat each chord as it's own scale.

my first thoughts would be to play positionally. do something at the 8th fret Fm shape, for the Db fall down to the 4th fret shape, and then up to the Bb shape at the 6th fret.

you could play all that in one position, but yea, that's not easy especially for someone new to improv
>>
What amp to get to get sounds like megadeth?
>>
>>60939175
Fm Pentatonic if you're new to improvising. Then go to natural minor. From that, just experiment!

No sound comes from the speaker, though I can hear everything through the headphone out jack. Pic related, second-hand, bought it last year and it has worked flawlessly until now.

Any idea on how I could fix it? I imagine the problem's the speaker itself, but I'd appreciate any help.

Even the whole construction of the cabinet changes the sound you get, it does matter.

I'm pretty drunk right now so take this with a grain of salt, but I think four 10 inch speakers is roughly similar volume to one 15 inch speaker. I think, you're basically throwing the same amount of signal at any given number of speakers. I presume if all cabs are the same impedance and the same speaker design, the volume will be similar, but the sound will vary, based on the size of the speakers.

Mixer is unnecessary, and depending on quality may only introduce noise and take away tonez. Also, unless the mixer us set up for it you'll want a di box.

Interface and an amp sim is a pretty common and popular solution, but as of right now the perfect mic and a great amp sounds better than the best amp Sims, but the best amp sim sounds infinitely better than bad amp/room/mic/placement. YMMV but try a couple amp Sims out, you can get demos for most of them I think, and there's always the less than legal way of obtaining software.

Amplitube is my favorite for cleans
Guitar Rig is my favorite for weird random effects
Revalver is my favorite for high gain
BIAS is getting a lot of praise from a lot of different people, but I'm still learning how to use it.

Anyway, on-topic:
Should I make a neck-through SG, or a bolt-on with an Ibanez-style AANJ? I'm leaning towards neck-through, since there are a number of hurdles to overcome (mostly related to needing to extend the neck into the body) if I don't want to compromise on "neck joins body at 22nd fret."
>>
>>60946207
I'm a sucker for neck through guitars, they just look and feel amazing

> mostly related to needing to extend the neck into the body

I'm no expert but from the videos I've seen luthiers usually make neck-throughs by making the neck span the entire length of the instrument and gluing "wings" to either sides out of which the body will be cut.

Where your fretboard ends can be anywhere you damn well please.

If you want a nice transparent or stain finish just stick a sheet of veneer on it. AFAIK that's how Schecter makes the C-1 classic.

Sorry if I misunderstood the question.

I meant that the hurdles are related to doing a bolted neck. If I do it neck-through, it would be making the neck go all the way from headstock to strap button and attaching wings out of which the body has been mostly shaped already.

I'll be using black walnut, so it will absolutely just have a nice transparent finish with maybe a darker stain around the edges. As long as the glue lines are clean, there's no need for veneer.

Okay, I'm not traditionally a bass player, I only play bass on my recordings, which up until now have been a lofi for my friends and my own enjoyment. I recently started a project with another guy I met randomly where everything just fell together, and the stuff we're coming up with is some of my favorite stuff I've ever written, and I really like the stuff he's putting with it. He's the lyricist and primary vocalist, and I'm the one in charge of writing music to accompany it. We've got a sax player, a violin player, and a choir lined up to do some things on it. We've been acquiring decent quality gear and software for the last couple months, I've got tubes in the mail for a couple of my amps, I set up both of my nice guitars, and I've been recording bullshit for the last 6 months and reading articles non stop for months to try to get my recording game up.

Things are starting to come together quickly, and we're at the final point as far as writing and planning goes to start tracking, except for one thing.

Bass. I can write bass parts no problem, but I'm having an issue with sound quality. Specifically the E string, it sounds dead and flubby, with any hard compression, gain boost, or distortion it starts sounding like I'm sampling fart noises. I changed the strings 2 months ago, and that helped, for maybe 3 days, then it slowly started to get back into fart territory. I used ernie ball lights, and the other 3 strings still sound decent enough, I recorded something yesterday where I tried to exclude using the E and it sounded phenomenal when I was done.

Is this a common problem? I've never played bass consistently enough before to notice an issue like this. It wouldn't even be an issue if we had more time during the week, but we can get 2 sessions in a week and it'll probably take us at least 3 months to finish recording. Should I just suck it up and buy a dozen or so .105 strings and change the E the night before every session?

I put it on a stand when I'm actively playing it, and I stepped out to use the restroom

Well yeah it's not gonna be stellar, it runs off of a 9v battery. I'm just looking for something that wouldn't sound like a fischer-price toy electric

Damn, seems to be around 9 years, going on a decade, a few hiatuses in there

Eh, I don't idolize many guitarists, and to say something like Buckethead would be exceedingly cliched, so Zappa I guess? The real one, not the coat-tail-riding fuck.

I'm composing a thematic black metal album sort of. With that janky guitar.

go talk to one of the managers and see if you can put it on a no money layaway, then you can put some money down next week. if the manager isn't a dick they should be able to do it,

You only need $150 to layaway one of them.

I wouldn't mind getting my diffusor in a pedal form, or as a dedicated rack unit.

You're still not going to find Pro Tools, Cubase, Logic, Abelton, Studio One, Waves, UAD, Izotope, or any other proprietary software that's become standard and common place in studios throughout the world.

It'll work fine in a bedroom for sure, but if you want to do any professional level production you're going to run into stumbling blocks.

I used to only use Linux just under ten years ago (not for production), but eventually I had to swap back to Windows.

>>60950156
You'll become very good at playing the exercise.

>>60950232
I don't really think about it. This sort of stuff comes pretty naturally for the most part.
>>
>>60950305
I'm not sure about US prices but it seems like it's a maybe a bit on the high end for used

Don't take my word for it though.
>>
>>60941561
>>60943333
Agreed. You don't have to go nuts, but you can find good deals on quality gear on Craigslist (or your country's equivalent) and even eBay.

Also, I've said it before, but look for a good, used Avatar cab-- nearly the same specs as Orange (minus the orange tolex) at 1/3-1/2 the price.

I guess it also depends on how you're going to use it. If you're playing at home, a 1x12 is probably enough. If you're gigging, then look for a 2x12 and mic it up. I don't think a 4x12 is necessary, unless you're planning on getting a full-power amp head (50-100w) soon, too.
>>
>>60950528
I've used it, it's alright. Still, becoming a master at it isn't going to help me outside of my bedroom. And it's not as versatile of intuitive as FL Studio that even people who can hardly read can make intricate music or songs that can get consistent radio play for consecutive months with.
>>
>>60950559
>i had it within the first 5 years of playing

>>60950588
>I don't really think about it. This sort of stuff comes pretty naturally for the most part.

Ok, some background. I picked up the guitar 6 years ago and i only played whenever i felt like it so i want to set actual goals since someone who's played seriously for 6 months most likely blow me out of the water. What i think this picking exercise will help me with is hitting the right string correctly without looking as i'm playing through a song. How would this not help me achieve that?

About the minimal movement exercise, if you guys never actually practiced keeping your fingers from flying off of the fretboard, then what were you guys learning to do during your first few months/years of playing?
>>
what are some good places to learn bass. I have been playing for over a year and still am shit.
>>
>>60950232
fuck I never noticed how bad my pinky reacts to me putting down my middle finger. Can't control it at all.
>>
>>60951123
update: this shit is making me suicidal, why couldn't you let me live in ignorance?
>>
>>60951338
You just have to do it reaaaaaallllllyyyy slowly like that guy said and you can't get it right fast. Years of bad habits also hurt you.

I'm not sure if this is correct but i'm trying to make my fingers tense while staring at the finger that likes to fly (in my case the ring finger) and for now, i do it correctly 2 out of 5 times.
>>
>>60951439
Even super slowly I'm struggling, doing it the same way as you too.

Glad it's been brought up now so I can do something to fix it really but it's maddening not being able to control my own body.
>>
>>60951465
I think this is the result of when you were starting out, you didn't have much strength in your fingers yet so your other ones would try to compensate by going at it at an angle.

Yeah, i really wish this knowledge was more widespread. Like a list of what beginners shouldn't be doing so they wouldn't spend a long while trying to unlearn these things.

This is why im curious about how those other anons got away from this trap and how proper technique came naturally with a few years of playing. I'm sure it doesn't.
