I know, I fucking hate the website. It's frustrating that they don't have forums anymore, they wouldn't respond to people when the forums were still opened. It baffles me that the company made all these decisions which go against their user's preferences, which seem to make no improvement to the site what so ever. They just went in and got rid of all the features people liked.

probably the vast majority of last fm users are "secure with who they are and what they like", its not like these peoples "music taste" doesnt exist before it gets curated on a last fm profile. i really dont think all you lot who say stuff like people are faking their taste on there have actually thought about what that would mean, cos surely no one is sitting listening for 2 hours a day to music they arent actually interested in. i dont think theres anything really that cynical about it at all, music obviously has a social element and its interesting to see what peoples library and listening habits look like.

It's simple, the authenticity of a last.fm user is perpetually in question due to the very nature of the site. "Everyone look at what I listen to!" you demand an audience for your taste, making it merely an act. I feel the same way about people who feel the need to announce their taste with the clothes they wear.
Remove last.fm and anything else of the sort and your true self has no choice but to come out. You'll start actually listening to music to understand it as an art form for yourself.

Everyone fucking says that, practically by impulse. Maybe instead of "good morning," you ask about a specific occurrence in the person's life and give a thoughtful (non-cliched) response. Do you see the different levels of authenticity? To relate this back to music, your last.fm scrobbles are the "good morning," while what you listen to privately and actively are specific and thoughtful greetings.

It doesnt have to be your "concern", you're missing the point of what I said completely. A young working class black dude that comes from a detroit housing project will be able to make sense of jeff mills and underground resistance a lot easier than someone from a swedish farm environment. They dont have to try and show that to people by constructing it or whatever, it is already part of their cultural landscape, and that is the landscape that the listeners of detroit techno came from. They dont put together a profile or whatever to reflect themselves, it already happens that they respond to the music because it was made out of the same environment of them. The same with young gay middle class white boys in england liking sam smith. They dont have to play scrobbles at night for that to reflect them, its already happening and theyre already listening to it.
I dont think, like you, that personality has to arise from thinking critically and engaging with art in a contemplative way. To take the point of saying good morning, yes its a formality, but its still imbued with sincerity and feeling often, and it still varies MASSIVELY from person to person based on their local dialects, what they think is acceptable manners in their social situation, how much they raise their voice (very different depending on mental health and masculinity etc.), how sing-songy or flat their tone is.
Likewise, you don't have to critically engage with abba for it to appear on your last fm profile, it just has to be a part of your natural listening habits. Like its natural for african american kids to grow up with their parents listening to stevie wonder and marvin gaye, so frank ocean makes more sense to them than a polish businessman, so its more likely to appear on their last fm profiles.
