Never had opportunity to use an MPC before so I can't say anything about its workflow. But yeah I tried microchopping a few times and it can be quite a pain in the ass to get right. In fact, here's a website that lets you play around with the Don't Cry chops:

Besides, I do think that Donuts isn't representative of the Dilla sound. I'd recommend his Slum Village works if you wanna understand what makes him so revered. Both Vol I and Vol II have his signature sampling style and crazy smooth drum mixing that still holds up to this day.

backpackers dont realise but dilla was already a minor legend before donuts. he already produced for tribe, erykah, kweli, de la, d'angelo, raekwon, common, pharcyde, blah blah blah way before that, its not like donuts came out of nowhere. the dude was on it. hard to see now cos of the shifts hip hop took after he died but he basically defined a whole community of beat styles for the early 2000s. he was mourned because he was loved not the other way round. listen to telephone by erykah which she wrote after she heard he died. something like that isnt just mythmaking, thats real man
anyway criticising ppl for talking about his death is really misguided anyway, cos it IS important that he died - he knew he was dying when he made the album, he made half of it from his fuckin hospital bed. youre hearing a man coming to terms with that and trying to make sense of his life and his love for it. whole albums littered with little nods to that. its not cynical to think about the fact he died, its not elevating the music to a myth level, its already there in the album. it helps you understand the feelings that are already there in the music. whatever man
