Yeah, it seems popular for everyone to get a locally made custom guitar over there.

Example: tricot's motifour and ikkyu have made the switch lately to custom guitars from:
http://altero.jp/
On video:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=h0Q_y54F070

Yoshiaki Manabe of the pillows, for his solo stuff, uses a mustang based custom from:
http://www.sago-nmg.com/en/
On video:
https://youtu.be/a3x23C_ffMU?t=1m53s

Supporting local manufacturing (folded a thousand times), lax copyright laws, getting customs at a much cheaper rate than everywhere else in the world for what you're getting in return, there's little to no reason for it to not catch on.

Tuned my ltd m-53 to drop D but it went out of tune before I even played it, noticed that the bridge did pic related. It just lifts out of it's cave to say "hi!". Had it in something like standard C before and it didn't do this. I have ernie ball not even slinkies on it, .012 .016 .024p .032 .044 .056. It's a "vintage tremolo" brigde.

Modt Squiers are shit (Affinity, Standard, etc.) and cheaply made in Asia. But the Classic Vibe series is decent.

Fenders are better, but more expensive. The main debate is to go with made in Mexico or America. I'd go with MiM because it's cheaper and you can upgrade the electronics in time.

Your amp will play the biggest role in tone so you should research that more. Avoid Line 6.

does anybody know much about the theory of avoid notes?

I ask because I'm a bit confused. Apparently the 6th note of a IIm7 is and avoid note (e.g. II chord of C maj = Dmin - avoid note of Dmin is B). But there is a min 6 chord which brings out that note, and playing the arpeggios of a min 6 chord does seem to 'work'. It fits quite well over a melodic minor too (A melodic minor - II chord is Bmin - G# is the 6th). Yet in my book of theory it says to avoid this note as it is weak.

What do you think /gg?

So I just did the same kind of serrations present on guthrie govan's signature picks on a jazz III. I have to say it's pretty fun, the little scraping of the edges adds in some kind of funky-ish noise.
I did it in a few minutes with an knife but you can probably make some more cello-like sounds if you cut it more regularily.

Don't play the fun stuff until you have done the boring stuff. Or, even better, no reading /gg/ until you have practised. You will be reinforcing the desired behaviour.

Learn modes. It will definitely make pentatonic soloing more "rich".

aren't modes for advance shit?
i can't sound half decent just with the basics i don't know if learning modes will help me.
also i remember reading somewhere that modes are pretty much a meme.
>>
>>60921779
that's because playing only standard pentatonics is bland and boring, it works for certain types of music, but once you get those typical standard pentatonic licks down you'll just find yourself repeating the same shit over and over again.

learn how to solo over chords that require you to switch scales rather than staying just hammering away in one scale.

try coming up with your own pentatonic scales if you want that are more in line with chords. say you're soloing over a dominant7 chord. instead of playing a major pentatonic over it, try a dominant 7 pentatonic scale, the only difference between the two scales is one note (you make the major pentatonic 6 into a b7 to get a dominant7 pent)

drill in arpeggio shapes so you know where all the core intervals of chords are up and down the fretboard.
>>
>>60922148
>aren't modes for advance shit?
are you retarded? learn theory faggot
>>
>>60922148
>also i remember reading somewhere that modes are pretty much a meme.
yeah notes are meme you should just play wall of noises with shitloads of pedals senpai desu
>>
>>60922148
modes aren't going to help you, they aren't that advanced, but you most likely don't know how to actually make a mode sound like a mode.

learn to solo over chords first

modes are a meme, at best you'll just be learning how to play a major scale all over the neck in different positions because you don't know how to actually use modes. worry about modes later.
>>
>>60922147
go full jaco and do a 25 minute loop improv
>>
>>60922148
modes arent that amazing, but definitely a tool to help you along.

Check here:
C ionian/A aeolian you should know as C major and A minor
C lydian/A dorian are same as above but with a raised F (so a F#). I dont use them as much, but they can be cool.
C Mixolydian/A frygian. B is now a Bb so improvising on I doesnt have a 7th note that really wants to resolve.
Locrian is shit

hey, you can now play modes!
>>
>>60922148
>i can't sound half decent just with the basics i don't know if learning modes will help me.
Maybe you haven't understood the basics then. You should be able to pinpoint every note on the fretboard.
You said earlier that you were getting comfortable with the 5 positions. In order to not sound like shit on repeat you have to fluently change positions as you play. As you get better you can try to incorporate notes from the chords played behind.
TL;DR learn theory and git gud

im trying but i just don't know how to realize it while playing.
i have read into intervals and how to construct scales.
i think my biggest problem is just phrasing i can't for the live of me playing something that sounds like a decent lick, and i don't know how to practice it to.whenever i try to put a backing track and just play slow i still don't get it.
are there any tips for this or exercises or should i just keep doing it until i finally get it?
please don't bully.
>>
>>60922429
Locrian is my favorite...
>>
>>60922462
if i can give some tips

if your stuck in certain positions when playing pentatonic it can help to do the following tricks:
-force yourself to play on 2 strings. This way you really need to think of the sounds youre actually playing and how the different shapes fit together
-learn longscales
-combine 2 postions together. practice by playing pentatonic notes doing 3 notes per string. but only play in the 2 positions youre working on. Keep doing this to blend your 5 shapes into a full neck.

if youre having problems with phrasing grab a miles davis (or other old jazz album) and emulate that music. think as a singer.

>>60922486
how?
>>
>>60922462
when you're playing along to some backing track try thinking of some type of rhythmic phrase in your head before you play and then try to play it

you'll start noticing that those rhythmic phrases automatically turn into some type of melody

even if they sound like shit just play the first thing that comes into your head, it's really the only way you're going to get good at instant improv

basically you don't just want to let your fingers find the notes, because that usually just ends up sounding like unmusical exercises (a lot of shredders do this type of stuff), you want to let your ears tell your fingers what to do.

This doesn't make any sense. Dropped D is only slightly lower tension than standard. If anything, the bridge would sit slightly closer to the body.

A scientific expedition disembarks from its plane at the final outpost of civilization in the deepest Amazon rain forest. They immediately notice the ceaseless thrumming of native drums. As they venture further into the bush, the drums never stop, day or night, for weeks.

The lead scientist asks one of the natives about this, and the native's only reply is "Drums good. Drums never stop. Very BAD if drums stop."

The drumming continues, night and day, until one night, six weeks into the trip, when the jungle is suddenly silent. Immediately the natives run screaming from their huts, covering their ears. The scientists grab one boy and demand "What is it? The drums have stopped!"

The terror-stricken youth replies "Yes! Drums stop! VERY BAD!"

The scientists ask "Why? Why? What will happen?"

Wild-eyed, the boy responds,

"bass solo"

Take in to consideration that I have pretty thick strings on it. Everything but the D feels way too tense on it. Now it seems to work good, stays in tune and I can play some pantera.

Help me /gg/

Got an Epi LP as part of a swap, got it all nice and setup up and all that jazz, but it didn't have the strap hooks so I figured I'd get those Dunlop strap locks. So I set them up and all that and the screw cavity ends up being too wide for the screws, but I can't get larger screws because they wont slide through the washer piece. Is it worth drilling new holes because the guitars not worth a ton, or do strap locks with larger screws exist?
>>
>>60924502
I'm no woodworker but I'd look into filling the holes with some sort of wood putty and screwing into that

Yeah, didn't really think upping it would require any adjustments. Stupid of me to think that way, but at least now I know better.

go back to the original strap pins and just get a rubber washer from a beer bottle and use those. Google "red strap locks" if you dont know what i mean

usually you would fill it with a dowel of the same size and then redrill a new hole

Your were in C standard, that's why it lifted. When you get the strings tighter, you need to do a new setup on floating bridge equipped guitars.

I installed a new pick guard on my guitar and I must have done something to the wiring somewhere because now there's a very annoying hum coming through the amp. When I turned up during band practice I couldn't hear it anymore but it's very audible at low volumes fuck I want it to go away.

it's not a matter of doing it well, it's that it's fucking obnoxious to hear a guy tune through his amp for 30 seconds. A pedal will assure that you're accurate and it mutes your signal

It could be a ground, it could be the faraday cage trick.

Did your old lifeguard have a sheet of foil of a metal back that went against the guitar? If so, foil and some spray adhesive will fix it.

If it's a ground wire you should be able to tell by bridging a piece of metal(or sometimes even your hand) from the bridge to the pot(only works with metal knobs, if you have plastic knobs take them off for this). If the humming goes away you need to ground the bridge. There's a little wire in there somewhere that needs to be tied to ground. I can help you with this, but I need a pic of your guitar, and if possible the back of the old pick guard.

Could also be that you're playing more attention now to your sound now that you messed with your guitar. Happens to knew mechanics too, they fix something on a car and now they notice every squeak and groan that happens because they're listening for issues more intently.

Also, it's more noticeable on the bridge pick up because, unless there was some fuckery performed on the guitar, the bridge pick up has higher output than the neck, basically meaning the signal coming from it is louder.
