i've always gotten some quasi-religious vibes from the screams that open the album, the meditative drones, and the chant-like vocals on returnal (and those that close the album)

I always thought of returnal as an after-death experience in music form. (first three tracks are the death itself, next three are hallucinations/after-death experiences, last two are revival.) R+7 explicitly feels like i'm being enlightened.

i see what you mean with returnal, although i always conceive of it in terms of creation–the birth of the universe, or something similar. that album takes me to such a liminal space, its unbelievable.
in regards to r+7, i feel like his religiosity via artificial intelligence approach is pretty revelatory, but i suppose i distinguish between merely religious and spiritual/sacred. returnal feels like a dialogue with the unknown, whereas r+7 plays with more traditional notions of religion (the organ compositions and whatnot)

Man I'm not the guy you're responding to but this conversation is just reminding me how fucking great both albums are.
Obviously R+7 is more overtly "religious" in its instrumentation and compositions (and song titles I guess), but I personally think that the feel is much more so as well. Have you seen the Boiler Room set for the R+7 tour? That version of Boring Angel makes me feel like I'm dying and my soul is being ripped apart/uploaded onto a machine where I will live forever. Chrome Country gives me similar vibes (but seriously check that live Boring Angel).
Nil Admirari, on the other hand, always felt to me like the excruciating sound of a machine becoming sentient.

I'd love to know where Lopatin sampled the piano from the title track from though. If I could make him answer one question it would be that.

It's actually an original composition from him iirc. There was an interview with Lopatin and Al Carlson, the engineer for the album, where Lopatin mentions that he played it himself after Carlson suggested it. I can't remember where exactly it is though :\

its that video but the vhs tape i have has the piano music daniel samples for replica.
I know it dropped this year but pic related really captured the feeling of obsession and greater purpose that embody the spiritual experience for me. It's hard to explain but it's a really intimate album, honest about subjectivity, it sounds like what transcendence feels like to me.
