I would say focus less on chords and try to think expand your knowledge of melody. What I like to do is sometimes pick a chord progression and come up with like 3 or 4 different melodies that all fit the progression to practice. Fingerpicking is really useful for this I would reccomend learning that if you don't know how already

Just make up your own chords, like try weird voicings, or change how chords sound. 3 3 2 0 2 0 is one I really like. Sounds really energetic, like a mix of a C and a G.
