I love The Cure, let this be known. But I can't get into 17 Seconds for the life of me! Do I need to give it another shot? Or should I pick up Japanese Whispers and move on? Also new Cure/Bobert Smith content when?

t b h I thought the best tracks were the singles; Play For Today and A Forest
Faith and Pornography are way better

It's good not really great or as fun as their first album. I'd say get Japanese Whispers for Lovecats alone.

At night, secrets and M are my favourites its an alright album but the live versions are better check out the peel sessions

Agreed, friend. Play For Today and A Forest are really great though.

why is nobody talking about Secrets?

It all feels like home demos of Robert Smith trying to sound like Joy Division but not really doing it right. I'd say Faith, Boy's Don't Cry and Pornography are much much better. As for Japanese Whispers... Eh, not one of their best either.

I think Seventeen Seconds is intriguing as a formative record of sorts. The band's clearly moving beyond the happy-go-lucky pop of Three Imaginary Boys but hadn't quite nailed that Faith sound just yet. It's also an album that wears that formative nature on its sleeve, as so many of the songs feel eerily skeletal in nature. Hell, The Final Sound is both foreboding as hell and downright incomplete as presented. I do think it has its bright spots - Play For Today and A Forest are bona fide post-punk classics, and tracks like In Your House, M, and At Night are pretty good as well. But I wouldn't be too bothered about it not clicking as it is a very, very imperfect record.

Seventeen Seconds is an awkward album. Japanese Whispers is kinda like Young Americans, lots of hits and different.

Looking back on Japanese Whispers, Lament's probably the only song on it I'd call great. Lovecats is silly and all but I dunno, it's okay I guess. That main riff on Lament can give a man shivers, though.
