If you had any of the following thoughts while listening to this album

>WOW this is mindblowing!
>three hours but SO worth it
>kamasi washington is an amazing sax player!!
>THIS PROVES JAZZ IS NOT DEAD!!!!!

then you are a pleb you haven't actively listened to any jazz releases from the past 10 years
>>
Ok buddy name five jazz releases from the last ten years
>>
If it's so shitty then why did it make the Wire's top 50?

>then you are a pleb you haven't actively listened to any jazz releases from the past 10 years

except I have and I loved The Epic

>inb4 you have to have listened to over 100000 jazz albums from 2005-2015 to be able to be allowed to say The Epic was a good album
>>
>>60891762
How about just from 2015? These are my favourites from this year:

>Omer Klein - Fearless Friday
>Tigran Hamasyan - Mockroot
>Tigran Hamasyan - Luys i Luso
>Vijay Iyer Trio - Break Stuff
>Mark Guiliana Jazz Quartet - Family First
>The Bad Plus Joshua Redman
>Michael Wollny - Nachtfahrten

Want me to keep going?

also

>five years in the making (insert snark)
>>

You answered your own question there
>>
>>60891829

I'm pretty sure the writers at the Wire have better taste than some random faggot on 4chan.
>>
>>60891820
yes, now order them.
>>
>>60891817
So you're just admitting you have shit taste then and you only listen to jazz because DUDE LOL JAZZ
>>
>>60891749
I'm sure there have been plenty of great jazz releases in the last 10 years, but Brainfeeder is a label I keep up with. So I listened to this, but other than this I'm not a jazz fanatic. I like jazz a lot, but I only listen the classics: miles, Coltrane, Louie. That and I like bbng. I'm down to listen to more just don't actively search for it

I haven't listened to this shit but I don't need this stress man
I don't need this insecurity
>>
>>60891861

how do you get that from what I said?
>>
>>60891874
Ps the epic was sick. Fuck off if you don't agree
>>
>>60891908
Because the Epic is an objectively bad jazz album and if you had any serious interest in jazz you would agree. How can an album filled with mediocre solos using mostly pentanic and pentatonic blues scales be classed as THE REVIVAL OF JAZZ? Not to mention the lackluster compositions and keeping Thundercat wasted in the mix

The whole thing is just a shitty ripoff of Pharoah Sanders and the Coltranes for people who don't usually listen to jazz
>>
>>60891749
It wasn't mind blowing but it was a pretty solid album.
>>
>>60891956
Actually it's objectively the greatest jazz album of all time, this is a proven fact.

the meme of attaching the word meme to the front of another word is dead fammo
>>
>>60891749
But this album is 99.9% better than all the other jazz trash people here enjoy, The Epic is truly an epic album that will probably never be topped.
>>
>>60892196
What I like about Verneri's quartet is they know how to keep things simple but they are all wonderful listeners and super tight
It's also great jazz to sing along too, "In La Borie" in particular

>>
>>60893430
I FINALLY UNDERSTAND THIS MEME, HOLY SHIT
>>
>>60891749
As someone who cares little for contemporary jazz, I feel like posers who want to seem like they know jazz, latch on to the hatememe for this album, coz its popular despite being derivative or whatever. Meanwhile every one of their AOTY is some hipster garbage with no new sounds. There are literally dozens of albums worth discussion over this, why not talk about them?
>>
>>60893587
the "dozens of albums" you're talking about didn't got the honors of being reviewed by pitchfork or Fantano tho, so they're not really "worth discussion"

actually good taste

I've listened to Jazz my whole life, heard countless records both of Jazz this year (Family First, Bullhorn, BadplusRedman, Snakeoil etc.) and beyond, and I can still recognize that this is a good record. It's essentially the Sunbather of Jazz, in that's actually a good record on its own but such a perversion of the culture because of the Brainfeeder plebs that "patricians" write it off as drivel. If your head wasn't up your ass you probably be able to admit the fact that the record stands solid due to the fact that the tunes are good and flow decently. It's not the expansion or revival of Jazz, but I really don't know anybody who's even stated that. Everybody I know who's heard this record outside of /mu/ are contemporary Jazz fans so I don't really see the argument.

I mean, i'm not sure yet. Of course there are filler tracks on here, but Claire du Lune? Re Run? Askim? They're all so good. I think this record is patient, but also filled with melody and emotional impact. You eard a better Jazz record this year with better melodies/feels? I'd like to know. The Epic isn't about a show of skill, moreso emotion. I guess if you're too caught up in the meme you can't feel it, but there are moments where I've felt more emotions than any other Jazz record this year.

It's funny how this sperg always ends up talking so much about The Epic, giving it lot of exposure despite hating it - same applies to all the pokemon card traders who suddenly became authorities on the genre the moment the album came out.
>>
>>60891820
Mockroot was just pseudo Djent. Luys i Luso was good though.
>>
>>60894577
It was gimmicky but cool
>>
>>60894584
His best work is Shadow theater by far. Just enough mockroot not to be obnoxious.
>>
>>60894577
Lol definitely, I have to be in a really specific frame of mind to listen to it otherwise the fusion/djent shit annoys me but it's still a super impressive album
Maybe I just have a fetish for a bass player, drummer and piano player all hitting accents in a phrase or ensemble hits
>>
I think a lot of jazz listeners are looking down their noses at this album because for them "real jazz" is in the bebop tradition whereas Kamasi Washington's music is more in the afro-american tradition of music as a communal experience.

The music and the whole West Coast Get Down collective has a very tribal feel to it and a lot in common in spirit to black music of the early 70's like Funkadelic and Sly and the Family Stone.

It's pretty disheartening to see actually that many jazz listeners are so close-minded about music.
>>
>>60894836
Most of the complaints I've seen are about it being derivative of Pharoah or the Coltranes, but I understand your point
>>
>>60893867
that's because rym is filled with retards

I've already listened to Break Stuff and My Favorite Things, neither are anywhere near as good.

I'll give Well, I Should Have a listen today, but you should give The Epic a second chance sometime. It's genuinely the most ambitious album of the year regardless of genre.
>>
>>60896540
In length absolutely.
In style or execution no.
>>
>>60896540
>genuinely the most ambitious album of the year

What are you even basing this on though? I keep seeing people say this everywhere but they never give any reasons or point to any specific melodic lines, solos or instrumentation
