At what point does it become shoegaze? What exactly makes shoegaze "shoegaze?" Is it the use of a tremolo arm? Is it a gigantic wall of effects? Is it the use of melodies?
>>60877526
I'd say it's usually the wall of effects. Not sure what you mean by the use of melodies.
>>60877570

Everyone is dying.
I'm in the mood for some shoegaze with really weird sounding effect-heavy guitars. Heavily abusing chorus, flanger, wah, pitch shifters and that kind of thing but still in the realm of reverby fuzzy shoegazey goodness. What band am I looking for?

>>60932798
Check out Souvlaki and Nowhere. Maybe some nu-gaze acts too, like SPC-ECO. Then once you think you've got a grip on shoegaze, check out Loveless.

>>60933616
Maybe I'm just weird but Loveless clicked so hard on first listen and Souvlaki and Nowhere are the ones that took an acquired taste.
>>60933956
Nowhere blew my mind on first listen cause of how much I liked the drums, but later listens I wasn't as into it cause of its poppiness. I like it now, but I don't like the upbeat poppiness of it the same way I like Souvlaki or Loveless or Shot Forth Self Living and stuff like that..

When I got into shoegaze, I didn't listen to My Bloody Valentine, because I was under the misunderstanding that they were Bullet for My Valentine, and thought all these blog sties were fucking stupid, or that i was going to be the one guy who hated the 'most loved/perfect' shoegaze band. Yeah I was a complete pleb, but I was navigating the internet at a young age and without much experience or context. Having gone through that, and finally caving in to listen to Loveless, I was extremely lucky. I kind of got introduced to it in the same fashion as the shoegaze fans did in the 90s, and because of that, it just clicked. If I had just jumped straight into the album, who knows if I'd be so obsessed with the genre. Gotta play the game before you fight the boss or something like that.
What I'm getting at is this is completely true, and some of the best advice i've seen said so simply.

>>60936741
I don't think I've really ever listened to Doom gaze before so any recs would be cool.
Shoegaze in general i've heard a ton of however.
>>60936752
Alright, so some of the more well-known ones are The Angelic Process' Weighing Souls With Sand and The Goslings' Grandeur of Hair, which is actually more on the noise rock side, but it too is slow and heavy.
>>60936752
oh and Planning for Burial's Leaving
>>60936774
Interesting. I've always considered them blackgaze and Noise-esque respectively, but not very doom.
Maybe my definition of doom is just wrong tho. Im looking for bands like Pallbearer and Candlemass with shoe gaze mixed in also.
Closest thing I can kinda think of to match that description is HANL. Which is only kinda close.
>>60936808
Yeah I wasn't sure whether to mention HANL. I don't really hear any BM in The Angelic Process, it's more drone doom to me. I'm not an expert on doom anyway, most of the doom I've listened to is stoner stuff, so maybe I'm getting this wrong.
Have you listened to Nadja yet? They have a album called "When I See the Sun Shines on TV" and it's a bunch of covers done in a shoegaze/drone/doom style. It's super heavy if that's what you're into.
>>60936845
Dude you nailed it. This MBV cover is exactly the style I'm looking for. Good shit man.
>>60936879
Have you listened to Starflyer 59? Their shoegaze albums are pretty heavy too, but I'd say they're outside the realm of metal.
>>60936974
Few songs. No album in particular. Where should I start?
>>60936999
Only their first three albums Silver, Gold, and Americana are shoegaze so you can just go chronologically with those three
>>60937008
