i dont entirely agree. there are some really cheap amps that give good sounds, and are fine for bedroom playing. it really depends on the situation

>but guitarpro is a pain in the ass to write sheet music on.

Have you tried using Sibelius??
>>
>>60873328
Yeah that's what I'm worried about, I can't afford something like a Rickenbacker at all.
>>

Not that guy, but I've always got much better results from Sibelius.

It doesn't have all of the 9001 special symbols in GP6, but note and chord input is super quick and smooth and the tabs look heaps better.
>>
>>60873388
pretty good price but youll need to change the tailpiece to an american. beautiful guitar though, lovely to play
>>
>>60873389

That's the problem though. There's no real point in getting an amp just to play with yourself in my opinion.

>>60873432
>It doesn't have all of the 9001 special symbols in GP6
I need those. Even though I have no idea what most mean but whatever.

>>60873388
Slap on some heavier strings and you should be fine, short scales are wonky without them.
>>
Just wondering about something that's been bothering me a while. With my Mexican Tele playing through my Fender Frontman amp the low strings sound muddy.

it's really noticable and sounds bad when I change from D to E for example, is this a tele pickup thing or should I be upgrading my amp?
>>
>>60873538
have you tried changing your strings?
>>
>>60873578
Nah, haven't changed them in a while, I'll give that a go anyway.
>>
>>60873538
The amp's probably at fault, try to lower the bass knob as much as possible
>>
>>60873538
First change your strings like >>60873578 said, then upgrade your amp.
99% of the time if the guitar is set up properly, the guitar is the problem if something FEELS bad when playing, and the amp is the problem when something SOUNDS bad while playing.
>>
>>60873578
>>60873765
>>60873810
Yeah just changed my strings and it's a slight improvement but still annoying.

I've been playing with the bass at 0, tone all the way up, think I just have to bit the bullet and get a better amp
>>
>>60873913
theres one thing you might want to try before getting a new amp and thats getting tone pots with a higher resonance. There is a chance that the high end is bleeding off at that point already and no amp will fix that.

>There's no real point in getting an amp just to play with yourself in my opinion
but there is, if you know jack shit about how the instrument-pedal-amp relationship works and you want to figure it out before spending more on a higher wattage and higher end amp. There are so many options nowadays, some bedroom trail and error can be very valuable
>>
>>60873913

>>
how do you stay motivated to do boring ass technical practice every day
>>
>>60874109
if it's baseline as fuck and doesn't require much concentration just watch TV or something in the meantime

if it's a mix of theory and technique then alternate between that and improvisation, seems to help in my case
>>
>>60874067
Then just buy an interface and use plugins. That way you don't have to spend hundreds on pedals you're not even sure to completely use, and will just have to buy a mic once you want to actually record something.

Can anybody recommend a good first jamming/gigging amp? I'm at that stage now but the shear number of different brands and models is overwhelming.
I'm looking to play grungy stuff and perhaps doom metal kind of stuff (Nothing crazy heavy though)
>>
>>60872400
They are actually comfy to play, except the warbeast.

They have good non-edgy guitars that look and play good, like the mockingbird, eagle and bich (depending on the finish).

Their top of line/custom shop work is incredible imo, they feel miles ahead of others.

Guys, recommend me a cheap guitar for >muh tech death but also jazzy sometimes
Honestly I was thinking of getting a Squier VM strat with a humbucker, they go around 300-380€ depending on the finish.
I also liked the VM Tele, but that one is 410€.
Ibanez RG or S in mahogany with natural finishes are alright, they go for 310€ and 350€ respectively. Plus they don't look as metal as the standard RGs so it won't feel out of place when I play with indie bands and so on.
Entry level jacksons are 300ish, there's dinkys with floyds for 300, dat 80s look, etc.
There's a BC Rich Warlock with floyd for 200, not sure about the quality though, they don't have any in stores only online.

What else is an option? <400 because I don't see the point in paying >400 for shitty club gigs where esoteric shit doesn't matter.

Pic related, the HSS Squier strats that are ok.

>>60874645
Sounds like an orange would be a good deal for you, although tube amps are always a fucking chore while gigging.

Or if you're not afraid of playing with setups, a digital preamp (like a PODHD500) and a poweramp are versatile, smaller, lighter, etc.
Only problem is it won't have that cool look that doom fans look forward to.

I'd rather buy a 7 string for tech death AND jazz, but at 300ish, you're ging to have to look used or save up your money.
>>
>>60875186
I was thinking about that too, but the price goes up significantly.
There are budget 7s, but they have squier affinity tier quality.
Let's say I go for a new 7, which ones do you recommend, without going crazy in price.
>>
>>60875215
Around 400€ new I'd look into schecters. They have a longer scale than ibanez, so their low B string has more definition.
In the used market though, you can find some Ibanez prestiges for 400-600€ depending on the seller and the model.
I have no idea how good jacksons are, never tried them, but they're owned by fender if I'm not mistaken so they should be decent.

>Can I play chords on this properly?

You can play diatonic chords on any western instrument.

Unless you meant "can I play wonderwall and have it sounds okay" in which case the answer is not really. There are acoustic modelling pedals that you can use though.

>How does it handle heavy fuzz/distortion?

As well as any electric guitar. What's with these questions? The ensuing tone could depend on a variety of factors separate from the guitar itself and the main drawback I could see you run into is that you'd have no humbuckers, making it harder to emulate certain tones..
>>
>>60877404
>You can play diatonic chords on any western instrument.

Okay, except percussion instruments and shit.
>>
>>60877404
It's a Bass VI, not a regular guitar. The questions relate to the specific tone and output of said guitar/bass. Please don't answer if you don't understand the questions.
>>
>>60873578
>>60873646
Strings should be changed frequently anywhere from two weeks to two months depending on how much you play, the weather, etc. You can extend string life by washing your hands before playing and wiping down the strings after play.

No, I did not realize that it was a bass VI. Answer remains the same, mostly. Assuming you realize what a fucking chord is.

Hammering chords with a pick like on a guitar is going to sound like ass. Best to play chords the way a bassist would (eg triads or 4 note chords with proper muting).

>The questions relate to the specific tone and output of said guitar/bass.

Heavy fuzz and distortion naturally cut your ow end so you'll have to keep that in mind. There are effects built specifically for bass out there and I don't see why they wouldn't work. Adding a dry track also works as well.

And don't be a twat if you're going to beg for help about something niche.

Top of the line Music Mans are pretty good, although I wouldn't call them sexy, they look kinda dorky.
Sterling has been kinda shitty kinda good depending on the year. Last time I tried them they didn't offer anything above their competition.
There's G&L, Squiers (Vintage Modified, Classic Vibe, Deluxe series), and they do strats a bit better for a better price imo.

I dunno man. It is pretty acceptable for most people I guess. I usually wait a lot longer than that to change strings myself.

I had a US EBMM Silhouette Special (basically pic related, but that's not mine) for a long time. Really nice guitar. Short scale, barely-there finish maple neck if that's your thing. Option for active pickup(s), I believe, if that's also your thing. Locking tuners.

Don't know about their SUB brand, though.

And I typically restring every week or two, but I have acidic sweat and life in a hot country. There's a lot of factors in string life, but two weeks to two months is a good guideline.
>>
>>60878120
Mileage varies because there are a lot of variables (sweat, string material, guitar care and storage, weather, etc). But you must not play a lot or use Elixirs or something if you keep a set on longer than two months. Strings do dull over time.

>>
>>60878400
A lot of musicians practice for hours upon hours. Even old timers who don't know too much theory would sit and listen to records on repeat to figure out licks one note at a time.

Hendrix, Slash, Frusciante, Vai and many others across genres sat for hours a day to figure shit out. They'd do dexterity exercises, practice licks, and listen to records. It takes work.

There's no such thing as natural talent and at best you could be as decent as the Arctic Monkeys or something like that within a year or two. But there's no point in measuring yourself against others, just be better than yourself.

Hey, I'm working on a song, haven't written a complete song ever, so I'm kind of stuck. Been getting into theory and chord progressions to try and learn how to write a full piece of music.

So for now, I have an intro, in Bb Lydian, then a "main riff" part, again, Bb Lydian, then a melody in F Ionian, and then again, back to Bb Lydian.

I stuck to one key, because for now, I think it's an easier way.

I also got to the conclusion that those are the modes, because of where my chord progressions in those riffs end and feel resolved.

So what the fuck do I do now? Take one of those modes and try making a different chord progression which would, say, for example, fit a chorus?

How do I bridge in a progression in G dorian?

Why is composing so fucking difficult? Do I need to learn more theory, or practice it in general? I always seem to get fucking stuck on like three or two good riffs and never make them into anything, even though they sound like they're going somewhere.

General tips on songwriting?

Yeah, I think they only do it as a step in to their main product, which is MM. They should have simply remained as a top of the line brand, and scrap sterling/sub stuff.

What is a good electric guitar for fingerpicking/open chord tunings. I want my arrangements to really stand out, but my humbuckers are too muddy. I'm thinking a single coil guitar, but I hate how strats and teles sound.
Are jazzmasters/mustangs/jaguars worth looking into? Looking for a bit more tone/warmth than the plink-plank-plunk that I hear from most single coils.
I really liked my friend's squier j. mascis signature, and was wondering how different that particular model is from the other jazzmasters.

Is the Steinberg UR22 still the best choice of interface in the price range?

I'll be getting an interface in the next few weeks and was looking between that and the Scarlett 2i4. I have a few microphones but would also like to record directly in from my guitar. MIDI isn't important for this.

My main concern was whether the Hi-Z switch on the UR22 accomplished the same thing as the pads on the 2i4. I've heard that the Yamaha pre's in the Steinberg are a bit better than the 2i4 and the sampling rate is higher too.

Out of all guitars, JM tone is most comparable to piano sound. I think AVRI pickups are exactly what you're looking for, the neck is very warm and the bridge is very bright
>>
>>60882537
>So that's why I was asking if actual fenders are any different from the squier model.

from what ive heard your better off with a squier and then just getting an american bridge. ( if you really want a good upgrade also go for some lollar pickups)
>>
>>60882537
in order of importance for your tone:
>playing style/technique
>amplifier
>guitar

if your first two aren't up to snuff then you'll never quite get what you want and keep chasing a dream. still not quite sure what you want, might need a better sample. maybe you don't quite know what you want either which is ok, just means you have to get out more and play more equipment or get better.
>>
>>60882537
the Squier Vintage Modified are true to actual Fender spec. I listed the differences w/ the Mascis in a comment above.
They need heavier strings than the 9s they ship with (11s are best) so if you play one in a store and it doesn't feel right, they didn't set it up correctly. I always recommend the Vintage Modified over the Mascis.

Ok, I got a budget of about $300-400 for an electric guitar. I'm looking to play shoegaze. What should I get?
>>
>>60886143
Probably a les paul clone. Conventional wisdom for that money is an agile + professional setup and fret job.

Squier Jazzmaster with any solid state amp and any cheap fuzz pedal will do.

You should probably pitch shift with a pedal, unless you want to go all out and get a Floyd rose. It's tough to do more than vibrato with most tremolos. Jazzmasters have a floating bridge which is a cool design but does not give a huge range in pitch.

Just sort of accidentally won a PRA SE Sincglecut on ebay. Wish me luck, guys.

well, what type of distortion do you want, there's overdrives, distortions and fuzz boxes, they all sound really different. watch some youtube video explaining the difference

if you want strictly a distortion, pro cat rat is pretty much as good as it gets

Keep doing it. Your first stuff will be shit, because EVERYBODY'S first stuff is shit.
That's ok.
Just keep writing and practicing, keep creating stuff that's within your ability to play.
As your playing and technical ability improves and stretches, so will your compositional ability-so should your ambition and storytelling. Keep trying to write songs that tell better stories, hit more and more primal emotions, and are more focused and flow better.
As you listen to and practice things that improve your playing, you should also read and practice things that improve your songwriting-like poetry that not only rhymes but scans, has an internal rhythm and covers themes that people know and can relate to.
To that end, study the famous poems of American and English Poets, stuff from The Bible, folk tales, and whatever other stuff that moves you. If it moves you, chances are it will move other people too, and that's exactly what you want.

Tbh the bible might be good literary source but epic poems are way better and these days histories and greco-roman as source material go over way better. Not to mention they have more liberal translation to english. Just look at vampire weekend's lyrics, which were a big reason for their critical success, if not for their commercial success.

>songwriting depends primarily upon music theory
Found your major malfunction.
The technique should serve the song, not the other way around.
You may very well learn techniques that you will never use, but it is always better to know how and never have to use it than to have to do something that you can't perform.
>>
>>60886729
there are some things technique wise that just aren't worth learning

like for me, i will never bother learning how to do all that andy mckee two handed playing crap because i personally can't stand it

Is it pretty much required to take lessons once you get past the newbie stage? I've been playing for a couple a years but have stagnated for probably the last 2. Any book recs or are lessons my only option?
>>
>>60886788
two handed arpeggios/sweeps like guthrie govan does to eliminate the pick noise can be really appropriate given the situation.
>>
>>60880189
i think your problem is you're focusing too much on the theory side of things and trying to make it nice and neat and fit into nice scale boxes

are you even sure it's in Bb lydian? are you emphasizing the #4/#11? you could just be writing some type of riff that goes from a I chord to a IV chord and you're over complicating it by thinking of modes when you have no need to.

a big problem i've noticed with guitarists is that they've watched too many youtube videos that just repeat all this mode bullshit. learn to play over chords first and worry about modes later.
>>
>>60886978
that's not really what i was talking about, that's more of a one finger tapping run

i'm talking more about all those players like andy mckee who use both their hands on the fretboard. i have no reason to learn it because i fucking hate that music

>my humbuckers are too muddy
So go for lower output and more "vintage" and underwound humbuckers.
The reason is that the more turns of wire, the output increases slightly, but also inductance increases markedly. As inductance increases, high end response decreases, which is why most super-hot pickups sound muddy.

PRS SE, without the birds means its an earlier model... i think you over paid anon, something like that would cost me £200 here
