I'm attending a doom metal show next week. First metal show ever

Are people just going to stand there and sway or will there be retards jumping around?

What should I wear?

Please help

For doom metal, in my experience people stand there and move pretty minimally. Occasionally you'll get some drugged up retard embarrassing himself, but its not too common at least where I live. Wear whatever you want, just a t shirt and jeans or something

I love doom but the thought of going to a doom show bores me to tears. I don't see how anyone could do it.
Hell, I always thought people went to Electric Wizard concerts and sat in circles while they all smoked pot. Make the inside look like a huge haze of drugs and death.

Damn, I was hesitant to listen at first because anons praised it for the riffs alone, and yeah they're right, it's a pile of riffs:the album, but I'll be damned if there's a riff lower than 8/10 on the album, hypnotic rhythm section the whole way through, best riffs I've heard in a while, take a listen, the first song is the only somewhat weak one on the whole album

Black Sabbath - First four albums
Pentagram - All albums, but the earlier the better
Candlemass - All the early albums, some of the new ones are great too, but not quite as doomy.
Scald - WIll of the Gods is Great Power

If you were thinking more extreme doom:
Anathema - All their stuff before they went alternative rock.
Electric Wizard - start with their 2000 Dopethrone

Mh, some others have been mentioned. I'm more into the epic doom tbqh

What is taste but similarities you share with other people anon. In reality no one can objectively have good taste because there is no such thing as "good," in the objective sense.

>>60875734
This

The notion of something being "objectively" good is literally incomprehensible nonsense. Scientifically, music is just meaningless patterns of sounds which our brain perceives and makes sense of. At least, that's my theory

I listen to a lot of bands from every single subgenre.

Well Salvation is a pretty relentless album, so unless you're into black metal like that it's understandable why it may be difficult to get into.

SMRC though? Each song is packed with memorable and catchy moments of triumph. It's like saying Taake is difficult to get into.

I can understand if the length of the album makes it difficult, but on an individual song basis it's like everything there is accessible in black metal.

>>

I'm actually curious about your opinion: What do you think about the lyrics of Deathspell's Trilogy?

A lot of people really grind on it for being "pretentious", and for a long time I might of agreed, but recently I've actually been able to extrapolate some meanings and concepts from the lyrics, and I'd have to say, Deathspell growl about some pretty cool shit.

I think the whole "pretentious" aspect comes from them trying to mimic the prose of the actual christian bible, which is incredibly dense and full of purplish nonsense.
>>
>>60876818
I haven't listened to all of them, but the ones I have were at least moderately enjoyable.
>>
>>60876860

I like them of course. I think there are some absolutely critical pieces within their lyrics, and I find the concept fascinating.

As for the pretentiousness it's two way, because you are dealing with the surrealism of Bataille (their primary influence), on top of the biblical prose. Both of which contribute to their lyrics and their "pretentiousness". Personally I find "pretentiousness" to be as vapid of a criticism as "hipster" though.
>>
>>60875568
the blackfags came back
>>
>>60876668
Yeah it's probably the length that made it so difficult for me.

But Taake is a completely different thing, it's a lot more melodic and rawer and has no chaotic moments, while SMRC is filled with chaotic moments that you can't even make out very well that's happening (I might be exaggerating here a bit), and this gets intensified on Fas.

So I wouldn't really compare DsO to Taake in terms of how difficult it is to get into, it's not the same and you know that, but I do agree with you on how SMRC is structured. It shouldn't be a difficult listen in theory. The tone and the riff on this are so comfortably catchy: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WPeJi68LpX0

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pWvZIKpj9qQ&list=PLVcEJl-KOCOS77kbObafDy8wCAIBP6NVu
It's not perfect but I think it showed outrageous potential. They remind me of later Dragonforce without all the goofy shit, and I think they could have been essential given another album or two, and it's really too bad they fell apart. They still exist but have basically been relegated back to local band status.

Honestly, this is what I feel now that I've listened through Groza and With Hearts Toward None and I'm halfway through Exercises in Futility. I've seen and heard so many people praise Mgla to high heavens that I expected something really groundbreaking and mindblowing but I was in for a disappointment. Groza is just your average mediocre BM album, there's absolutely nothing worth mentioning about it. With Hearts Toward None is good but nothing special, definitely not worth the hype and attention it gets. Exercises in Futility is by far the best of the three and actually has some great riffs, but it's not AOTY material like so many people claim here. Overall, I'm a bit disappointed but at least each album is better than the last so the direction is right. I'm eagerly waiting for the next Mgla album to be better than Exercises. Terribly, terribly overrated nonetheless.

It's called Sound-Mass composition. When you layer cacophonous riffing to the point where it surpasses some uncanny-valley threshold and the guitar-works sounds more like billions of people screaming, or demonic entities, then chords and melodies.

Fas has more in common with Krzysztof Penderecki and avant-garde 20th/21st composition than black metal, imo.
>>
>>60877797
But SMRC Is so easy to understand, you can hear every chord clearly, the only challenging album of theirs is fas

>>60877859

I listened mostly to Slayer, which I've found a lot better than what made me interested in metal in the first place - KF2 soundtrack (Zynthetic, Demon hunter, Living Sacrifice - The vocals there seem like they're not supposed to be there, not lyrics wise but the way they're implemented into the songs)

I guess I just need to listen to a bit more before I can form my opinion, I quite like Raining Blood. I have to say that I like when the songs contain a lot of vocals, but I don't know any good power metal albums and the few random power metal "hits" I've listened to seem to have very weak guitar and drummers, focusing on the singer it makes sense, but it's just the way it felt to me.
>>
>>60877859
While that is true, there are some bits of cacophonous moments on SMRC that resemble a bit (although not with the same tone, complexity and cacophony) what would later appear on Fas. But I take out what I said about SMRC being "filled" with chaotic moments, I'm just stupid, the chords are very discernible, it's more the drums that make some moments sound chaotic.
>>
>>60878090

They have some really nice colors and melodic aesthetics, but the main grip I have about their music in general is that their phrasing is literally limited to either triplet feel chugs and 32-th note tremelo picking. There is almost nothing interesting about the structures and shapes evoked in the riffs.

This.
Amon actuall stops being catchy to me after a while due to the monotony of the phrasing. If they had an equivalent amount of "Shape" to their melodies as they did color and aesthetic, I'd fucking own everything they made... but they don't. By a huge margin.

I'm not saying they are shit by any means, but I personally don't really like them enough to keep any of their albums. Maybe a spin on the youtube every once and a while...
