you're missing out, I assure you. wind instruments have really unique timbral capabilities that are not used in the classical repertoire. That's just one example though.

I should clarify, but I don't know how to. I've been linking wind in this thread. I love both Schoenberg and wind instruments. What I'll never appreciate, and this is the only word I can come up with, is that "contemporary" style shit. Only thing I'm missing out on is garbage.

don't be so quick to dismiss all music of a certain style. yes, there is a lot of contemporary bullshit, but I think you can probably find stuff that you like if you can just give it a chance. If you like schoenberg, check out the channel that posts this video:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=x2vX8JXfKEc

Looking at scores usually helps me appreciate a piece. Even if I don't "like" the piece, I can still understand it better and it doesn't seem so intimidating to listen to.
>>
concert band recs?
>>
>>60871057
I don't think it's possible. I don't mean all contemporary, I'm just using that word to describe that style. I've tried giving that kind of stuff a fair listen. I've tried listening to it for the piano, for string and wind instruments, for ensemble. I just can't bring myself to like it.

i don't know about stockhausen and schoenberg having the same style. schoenberg is a romantic is sheep's clothing. ditto goes for all of the SVS, really.

what recordings have you been listening to? too many people play SVS via Darmstadt rather than via Brahms.
>>
I play clarinet and I can't help feeling it's the most pleb of wind instruments (with the exception of flute/recorder)

like seriously I'd much rather play sax or even a trumpet
>>
>>60871104
I can't remember any of the artists because I couldn't care less but I do know they were all quite modern. Nothing from, say, Schoenberg's period.

Play some 20th century or Brahms you'll feel so much better and really though All Clarinetists are expected to be able to play sax.

Classical sax is a thing and it's amazing.
>>
>>60871116
>because I couldn't care less
i won't tell you how to listen to your music, but the performers are equally as important.

anyway, maybe try giving it some more chances. i think one of the /classical/ megas has that collection of RIAS recordings titled "The RIAS Second Viennese School Project" which has some 50s recordings of SVS compositions performed by many people who were close associates with the SVS, and you would be surprised at how differently, and more affectionately, they can play that music.

not all of it is gold, but it's a pretty good set.
>>

>>
>>60871192
here, try this. i found it on youtube, which is a bit surprising. there's been an awful lot of various performers being uploaded on youtube as of late, entire channels dedicated to performers.

not sure what's up with that, but it's pretty neat.

anyway, try this:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NWe5q6HFNx4&list=PLxk5Y8ebbn69Dn3EkOG-NWjRfZJRU4Nch

played by one of Schoenberg's close associates. ignore the noise, it quickly fades away.

Exactly. Make yourself "That pretty cool dude who listens to harpsichord music". It'll be like a unique quirk. Might even serve to make you a bit more interesting.
>>
Who can listen to classical music without being seen as pretentious?

I mean that as a non-rhetorical question.
What qualifications do you need?
Old money/rich family?
A BA from a respected university?
Specific training in classical music?
A professional career?
A high government position?
>>
>>60871334
Who gives a shit, just listen to it
>>
>>60871334
Be brown and actually enjoy it, if you think of what makes you like it too much without having the emotional feeling behind it, it feels like a pretentious thing.
>>
>>60871276
Kashiwa Daisuke, then upgrade to Chopin or Debussy.
>>
>>60871300
Learn to play the stuff on piano. Make it a skill and not a quirk.
>>
>>60871334
The thing is if you think about music in any intelligent way for any amount of time you'll basically be above 90% of people, its too hard not to be "pretentious" at this point in my opinion

Who the fuck cares. Just listen. If someone asks why you like it, just respond with "I just like the way it sounds" so they can't derive any assumptions. If you "just like the way it sounds" then you don't need to be anything at all to listen. No one can possibly say anything negative.
>>
>>60871554
>LOL THAT SOUNDS LIKE SHIT ANON
>>
>>60871554
>listening to late beethoven because you like how it sounds
but muh isolated genius! struggle and triumph represented in sonata form!
>>
>>60871565
That's not exclusive to classical.
>>
Someone post the picture that includes Beethoven walking away, hands behind his back with labels on each person?
>>
I just turn up the pretensions to 11 and people just assume I'm pulling their leg. I get to tell them how inferior they are to me and make them laugh at the same time, it's perfect. Made more than a few friends just by putting some charisma into it.

Honestly though, nobody really gives a shit most of the time. Unless you run into someone who is really insecure, no one is going to think less of you because they might assume you're pretentious. The only time they might is if you act awkward or strange about it. Just don't make a big fuss about it and neither will they.
>>
>>60871086
I don't what to tell you except to open your ears. read "the rest is noise" by alex ross if you want to give contemporary stuff a shot.
>>
>>60871636
That's not worth it, even if I come to appreciate it. I'm quite fine with the pretty sounds that come from normal classical music. I don't even want to come to like it. It hurts my heart to listen to.
>>
>>60870823
>not my taste
>garbage

also your a pleb
>>
>>60871668
There are many things I don't like that I would never call garbage and that I can appreciate. This just isn't one of them.
>>
>>60871685
so what exactly makes it low quality
>>
>>60871554
What goes on in the privacy of anyone's mind has nothing to do with reality, so what I care about is how it looks.

If it's too difficult to avoid bad face then I'll keep my interest private.
>>
>>60871704
No, my point is that by giving that response, it is literally fucking impossible to look bad. How could you possibly look bad by saying that unless you go around as if bragging? As long as you don't say something as fucking ridiculous as "I like to appreciate the finer arts" or "I like how intricate the music is", most likely resulting in you getting quizzed on theory, you should be fine. Personally, I keep it private until explicitly asked what kind of music I like. I will never mention it as a hobby or what I do in my free time.

I still live at home with my parents and there is a piano there, but I don't know if I feel like starting up and learning. That sounds lazy as fuck I know. I could easily learn too. Drum kit out in the garage, sister has a saxophone, dad has a banjo that he doesn't play, we have a couple of harmonicas too. I have a myriad of choices, but I never bother to play. I hate to play the depression card, but I really do have no motivation as much as I loved playing.
