ITT: Albums that create their own "sonic universe." albums you can get lost in. Albums that sound truly singular and create an atmosphere so thick that the album basically creates its own microcosmos.
This.
I never see this on here, no idea why.

If you listen to this attentively enough, you can actually like you're in the middle of a flood.

This
Such a ridiculously detailed "world" at that
It's like being locked in a squat a with A schizophrenic who thinks he's H.P. Lovecraft
>>60857486
Agreed family
It's definitely a one of its kind album. You don't have to like it though.
Karma by pharoah sander and most of coltrane's later works
shit is like an American suburb on literally every drug possible, and you're locked in a sadistic 7 year old's basement stuck with a paranoid schizophrenic who vomits conspirancies and a terrorist who believes he's stuck in a FPS game
>>60857845
Totally
I think this album represents this sort of Romeo and Juliet esque world to me.
And I love it.
obligatory
Holy c
All of their albums have something like this, but this one definitely does it best.
>>60857647
Absolutely
Excellent thread so far
The use of samples and production really draw you in. It's like if a really well written and catchy pop punk album was recorded and produced in a facility where government scientists tortured kids to make them ghosts
>>60858128
I still can't understand how they recorded the title track.
>>60857450
Ive been really trying to understand this album. Although i like new grass and after the flood and the other songs are good too, it hasnt clicked with me yet and im sad about that

Agree with all of these. Great choices.
My Head is an Animal, it has a fantasy vibe like no other album I've heard.
>>60858329
But Myrrhman and Runeii are incredible! I mean so are The Rainbow and Wealth, but I think those two tracks on Laughing Stock open and close it perfectly, very stripped down, claustrophobic, and beautiful
cant believe this hasnt been posted
>>60857667
Yes!
Their first 4 albums each have unique atmospheres.
>>60857845
Phil creates wonderful new worlds with his music, especially with his albums under Mount Eerie.
starts out with hype tracks before slowing into a more conscious and experimental tone which it follows up by bringing you into this story of utter angst, fueled by drugs, heartbreak, and some clear eminem, odd future influence. i guess since its all produced by the same person it makes the sound very cohesive. still wouldnt listen to it sober. isnt good for easy listening, requires youre full attention to really get it.

I feel like Takk is better as a full on cohesive statement, Agaetis Byrjun gets all the attention because it was more out of left field when it was first released
>>60858608
Eh?
>>60858632
Seriously. Radio Gra into Below The Salt in Who Cares was nearly a religious experience to me
>>60858064
EESH I GOT OPINIONS ON THIS ONE
okay okay
ICHTHBAO is more varied and a better representation of what Yo La Tengo can do, but I feel like Painful is WAAAAAAY more of a single cohesive experience.
This, I just feel that when I'm listening to it I'm just in another world, it's like a sequel to ADBA in an epic story.
>>60858528
Nice analysis i didnt even realize some of that stuff you said but its all very true. Still havent gotten everything out of it theres just so much to dig into.
>>60858715
Yeah Painful sticks to one mood and does it super well while ICHTHBAO hits a lot of bases and does fantastic at all of them. They're pretty equal.
It's a fucking depressive atmosphere, but holy shit it's so thick.

underrated post
This isn't an album. It's a gigantic mass of demon-possessed industrial machinery and gothic architecture smashed together, constantly belching out clouds of noxious smoke, bleeding radioactive wastes, puking gasoline and morphin, and screeching out the distorted hymn of the luciferian empire at full volume. It's the frantic death-spasm of a drug-crazed cyberterrorist broadcasting his brainwaves across a billion relay antennas to drown humanity with digitized hatred and madness. It's a relentless war machine of totalitarian megalomania and rabid anger unleashed against civilization and sanity. It's the demented fever dream of a self-proclaimed tyrant ruling over a world of over-medicated, technology-addicted slaves soon engulfed in nuclear fire and returned to primordial chaos.
It's fucking beautiful and it goes UNTZ UNTZ UNTZ
>le post a /mu/core album and pretend it fits op's specifications general
you guys are literally reddit. i hope you know that.
I'd also argue Lift Your Skinny Fists by GY!BE and, surprisingly, New Moon by Elliott Smith
