Well theres a difference between clipping and clipping. You want to use a maximizer/limiter at the very end of the mixing process to make the track louder. Now some people are for and against this (see loudness war) but in the end I'd say go for it.

I've got a master limiter on it in reaper. Most of my production problems are coming from the fact that I don't have any legitimate beat software. My kick is just a low synth in a free plugin (synth1).
I also tend to make more dynamic beats since I started as an instrumentalist and got into electronic/rap music.

Also, when I'm looking for particular sounds (for instance ice rustling in a glass cup) Google, and also sound library sites like soundbible.
Another thing is, you should get some basic synth programs and a decent DAW. Idk what you are using now, but i recommend
Ableton live (my go to for everything)
Reason (fucking amazing software but complex as hell)
FL studio (good software for windows users only)
and Logic (good software for mac only)
For synths I highly recommend Massive (ew but its popular) yeah but you can use it for literally EVERYTHING! Synthleth and nexus are good too.
