I know that this is a joke and all but I find top 40 music way harder to listen to than a lot of other genres; it's loud, trashy and clichéd to the point of inaccessibility and it hurts my ears and gives me a headache where stuff like merzbow, swans etc. doesn't.

I agree, but I think it's the opposite effect. By now I have the patience for music that strives to be sonically interesting or evocative, and top 40 pop that checks these marks to the absolute minimum can just exhausting
