the only reason they're regarded so highly is because of their output in the 90s; everything since has largely been mediocre and forgettable.

Raster-Noton
Miasmah

Semantica Records

I'll digest with great joy basically anything these groups release.

A couple of labels currently on my radar who are on a roll so to speak are Infrastructure New York and The Death of Rave

>>
>>60851767
>have put out a shit ton of seminal records
they haven't even got a large catalog, I'm sure very little of it is seminal. The biggest name here is Jeff Mills and he's had more important records on different labels.

I think you are just enamored by their coolness and overrating this.
>>
Let's put a little variety in here.

it's true that they don't have a large catalogue and they're certainly not as influential or innovative now as they once were, but pretty much everything they released up until 2003 is untouchable.

so in a thread about the best labels, they are here because of what they did 20 years ago, and their tiny catalog is somehow better or comparable to other labels whose history contains far more good music?

They are just cool, that's it. They had some good music but they are no where near 'the best' of anything

yes, that's how great those records were. there influence is far-reaching still today - not just in terms of techno, but in the entire ethos of underground dance music itself. those "outsider labels" that are currently very popular? they owe a lot to ur.

pioneers yes... warp were pioneers too... but they died in the early 00s as well... neither label is at all relevant currently.

PAN is probably the most exciting label in electronic music currently but the label is pretty much dead. collectives of musicians like susan balmar's psalmus diursae are much more interesting.
>>
>>60852477
>2. Sub Pop
no they suck

>>60852485
How are they more relevant than all the IDM people on warp? Those guys pioneered all the digital music stuff that actually is relevant today.
>>
>>60852313
no, i meant in terms of dance music where the underground ideology holds much bigger weight and is essential to it's history (meant to say "outsider house" - forgot a word). it all had to do with the climate of detroit at the time and the fact that much of america had little regard for the issues and marginalization of the people there and it manifested itself in their music and the entire underground techno scene in general. not trying to sound patronizing when I say this but you should read up on them - they were hardy edgy to be edgy. "universal techno" is a great documentary.

and i never said they've gone totally bad. they can still put out solid releases, just maybe not as mindblowing. mad mike is still doing god's work. but as some point, even the most crucial record labels start to stagnate and lose relevancy (as seen in most of the choice selected, not just mine).

>>60852426
they certainly had a harder and distinct style.

how can you actually look at something like ae of AFX and think that they are doing a watered down version of what UR people did? If anything their music is not only more relevant, but less accessible with all the glichy polyrhythmic noises and shit as opposed to just regular computer instrumentation.

you ask those old sckool techno guys what they are trying to do, and they would tell you they are basically just trying to get people to dance. You ask ae what they do and they tell you they are just exploring sounds and space discovering new things.

that has nothing to do with production, that's mastering. if he wants the to press transcodes to be a dick and not give a fuck or so when they get reissued decades later he can have them sound even better that's his business, but it has fuck all to do with the production
>>

hudson mohawke, rustie, and tnght are the biggest indicators of what a pile of shit current warp is. only artist still making above average work is opn....

Drukqs is so much worse than what Amon Tobin and hell, even Squarepusher were doing at the time, and the avant-garde compositions are kitschy as hell. I fail to see what /mu/ sees in this album.
