pretty idiosyncratic mix of post-rock, post-hardcore and spoken-word passages. Anyone seen Breadcrumb Trail? A lot of this album's recording process was pretty experimental, mostly just came from jams and hastily written lyrics.

Ya it's a great documentary. Very insightful

Post-rock and math rock.
I wouldn't really call it experimental because of the context, the guys weren't trying to make something new, they were merely trying to make cool music that had the confrontational style of hardcore punk but was less aggressive, they didn't want that.

Notice how it's considered a secondary genre.
>>

have you read the 33 1/3 book on spiderland? its still worth a read if you've seen breadcrumb trail. a lot of good information

Name a band that could be called a predecessor to Slint

All I can think off is Chrome and Public Image Limited
>>
How come this album has barely aged in the almost quarter of a century since its release? It still sounds fresh and applicable to today's music scene.

They were influenced by neil young

Pixies
>>
>>60836813
Not really.
>>
>>60836788
Yes, they created their own extremely original sound, but it was just because they were trying to make something cool, they didn't really take an avant-garde approach to it or say "hey, lets try something new and never done before". It was an accident. It's also part of the reason why Spiderland is my favorite album.
>>60836812
Yep, they were. There's a cover of Cortez the Killer in the deluxe box set from last year.
>>60836813
Not even close.
>>
>>60836844
The booklet that came with the cd said they were also influenced by Phillip glass

The band themselves claim that Black Sabbath, Gang of Four and Sonic Youth were also big influences for them at the time, but you don't really hear any of their influence on Spiderland.

All the 33's I've read are super dope, I didn't know they had one for slint
>>
>>60836844
>they didn't really take an avant-garde approach
their riffs and the constant changing of time signatures is something i would venture to call avant-garde. i mean, look at the chords in don aman.
if the residents are called avant-garde, then slint definitely have their toe in the category.
>>
>>60837196
Yes, Slint in fact were very ahead of their time, and I've actually learnt 4 out of the 6 songs on there on guitar, I know how they're played.
But the band was not thinking "let's make something experimental" when they made that. They weren't saying "let's do something that no one else has never actually ever done before". No, they just said "let's make some cool music". Which is why I don't consider them experimental rock, because it wasn't really an experiment perse.
>>
What's your favorite band that wear their Slint influences on their sleeves? Bands like June of 44, Rodan, For Carnation, Mogwai, maybe some post-hardcore/emo bands?
>>
>>60836906
how does this chart work? I asusume the bands below each band their influences and the lines are influeces of those bands but it's so oddly made

Have they ever mentioned King Crimson or any sort of prog as an influence?
I've always felt Spiderland shares a lot of qualities with Red.
>>
>>60838663
No, interestingly enough they've never mentioned any prog rock bands at all as their influences. I can hear the definite Red comparisons though
