Depends, is it an old model VT40+, or is it one of the new ones?
If it's an old one, no way. I managed to get a second hand 120+ for £100 (~140euro) just by looking about for a good deal.
If it's a new one, go for it, the new VT models are really good value for money and great quality amp modelling.

It's an Ashbory bass.
It's got silicone rubber strings, an 18-inch scale and a piezo pickup in the bridge that make it sound more like an upright bass than anything else.
>>
>>60836733

Also my rig cuz why not
>>
>>60836810
It's the bass all the rubber-stringed uke basses were derived from, actually.

The design goes back to the mid-1980s, where a UK pickup designer built a rubber-band strung bass with a piezo pickup in it on a lark and it just caught everyone's imagination. The rubber bands got changed out for silicone strings and the design got picked up by major guitar makers, first Guild and then later Fender.

>>60836828
Because a good upright costs well over $2000 and weighs 50 pounds.
This thing weighs 2 pounds and there's one available locally for $250.
>>
>>60836606
I suppose it does come with the footswitch, and the vt20 is ok, but why spend more when you can get better for cheaper?
It depends anon, are you buying from a small music store, because if yes, you should take it, earn that customer value.
>>
>>60837045
The used 180euro vt40+ with the footswitch is from an eBay type of site and the 200euro vt20x without footswitch is from thomann. If there's any better amp for the same price or cheaper you can tell me.
>>
I'm trying really hard to write on a wonkier, freakier kinda post-punk inclination for my new group but being a bassist I'm finding it difficult to come up with spacious and melodically off-kilter lines that can still fill out the main chunk of the instrumentation. I don't have much of a grounding in theory, but I guess everything I come up with is fairly typical on the major/minor scales. What are some really weird scales that might sound interesting?

It's just a bass/drum duo and I'm trying very very hard not to sound like DFA or Lightning Bolt.

Yeah, I'm looking into that.
Apparently, the material used for the strings is actually silicone cord used for custom-sized O-ring gaskets, and is apparently quite inexpensive.
For the price of a normal set of bass strings, you can get 10-foot lengths of each of the string sizes, giving you enough cord for 9 full sets' worth of strings.

Yeah, but it's the color matched inlays, knobs, pups, and paint with the acrylic pickguard that sets it apart from the normal white/pastel/neon ones that usually get released. That being said, I'd prefer the white much more than that one. I could never see myself owning one personally. If I was forced to drop 3 grand on a new piece of gear I'd probably buy an amp, or one of those 4 channel tube uad pres but that's a whole different can of worms.

The one that's attached to the most efficient speakers. Anyone who tells you anything else is lying.

>are any of them able to get a gigable clean tone?
Some of them are obiviously more capable than others, but generally not so much.
The volume required for most club gigs is attained at about 30-40 watts of output. A 20-watt amp can only get there when testing the outer limits of its headroom, whereas a 40 watt amp can get that volume while staying clean.

a good amp imo, but I'm using it more at bedroom level so the noise is almost zero. When I use it at jamsessions there is some noise and if you use the built in reverb it's even more noise, but It doesnt annoy me at all

>>60841137
Only problem I've ever had was with the FX loop. I pluged my amp into box and guitar into amp as usual but no sound. than put volume to ma and heared some sound -> thought the tubes were broken. Long story short, I discovered that I activated the FX loop with nothing in it and this basicly muted the amp, but some sound could pass.
took me 2 days to figure this all out.

they did, returned the amps. our rhythm guitarist lucked out and found a 5150 for $150 used

Probable dumb question-- can you run a bass amp through guitar speakers without blowing them out?
>>
>>60841244
H&K usually has very good support. had to do with them because of friends, usually everything was going fine. no problem with returning and getting amp fixed for free.

but imo the H&K isnt the best amp at all. Higher Gain settings just dont fit, the reverb is crap, I play my Orange AD30htc instead most the times

Gotta say considering the plethora of pedals I've gone through over the years, this is surprisingly the best distortion pedal I've ever used. Not big on Boss pedals either, but this one kicks ass.

Look for a silicon fuzz that uses the BC108 transistor. You can YouTube BC108 Birdsnake to see what I'm talking about. I swear by mine.

>fuzz

That's...not really what fuzz is all about. Granted, a lot of fuzzes do get noticeably smoother when you roll off your guitar's volume knob a little. But if it's smoothness you desire, an MXR Distortion+ is probably more up your alley than most fuzz pedals.

Think David Gilmour, Santana, later Sonny Sharrock, Fripp in "Starless"

Something like the lead tone at 1:50

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QsTSoNhhZtM

The big muff is pretty much perfect but I just wish I could extend the sustain without it getting too brittle in the high end.

Maybe a Ram's Head Big Muff clone?

>>60841459

>>60841216
don't fuck with the truss rod. if there's already a bow in the neck and it's buzzing you have other problems, the straighter you put the neck (tightening the truss rod) the more it is going to buzz

your frets need to be leveled

what type of guitar and where are you measuring the string action? and what type of ruler are you using to measure it
>>
>>60841216
Depends on where the buzzing-and the bow in the neck-is.

If it's buzzing mostly in the low frets, then raising the saddles and tightening the truss rod slightly will solve your problem.
If it's mostly in the middle of your neck, then loosening the truss rod will help.

that sounds like fuzz face probably with some type of booster or overdrive stacked behind it

that's how david gilmour did it on dark side, he used a booster/overdrive pedal and a fuzz face stacked in front of it. he basically EQ'd his fuzz face with the booster pedal to smooth it out so it doesn't sound like a messy fart.

You're either one of three things

1.) You don't like it because it's cool not to like Boss, for blatantly elitist reasons
2.) You're only impression of it from actual experience was through a Squier stratocaster at some kids house through his 10 watt peavy amp
3.) It has Metal in its name so you think its edgy, because you're just that much of a shitty judgmental prick
>>
>>60841780
1. I've got 2 Boss pedals on my board
2. My impressions of it come from attending many shitty local metal shows where every band used this and had tone reminiscent ofa can of wasps. I've also played one through a Marshall MA100H head and 1960B cab.
3. I play metal.

I don't like it cause it sounds like shit, m8.

Though rare and expensive now, the circuit has been traced and clones are available.
>>
>>60841877
And what's your idea of a good one? Because I have yet to find a distortion pedal by any big names that delivers powerful enough gain. Namely, electro harmonix, ANY other boss pedal, digitech, and mxr. All shit for metal.
>>
>>60841713

this pedal is pretty much the definition of gilmour's tone on dark side, i really want one but they're fucking expensive.

>>

>>
>>60841713
well shit, that's basically how I'm doing it now. (overdrive stacked in front of big muff at low gain) I wanted something that could do it in a single pedal.

Have any of you guys tried Skreddy pedals? They kind of seem overpriced if they're really just big muff clones, this one sounds pretty damn good though.

>well shit, that's basically how I'm doing it now.

a lot of guys do it, i do it too because i find it just sounds fuller when you gain stack a fuzz and an overdrive. fuzz pedals by themselves sound either too thin or too muddy for me and they usually have terrible sustain.

it's a very specific type of sound when you stack a booster/overdrive with a fuzz, very 1970ish type of distortion sound

I wouldn't use PAFs myself, but it's a preference thing. A lot of LACE's options are fairly hot ceramic pickups. Cool for sure, but only if you're into that sort of sound.

Holy Diver or Crawlers would probably be my pick, but I'm almost always going to recommend a BKP set.

So since I've had a boost in funds by selling online and getting tipped out well at work, I realized I don't need a new amp or pedals, I decided to get a new guitar(s). My problem is deciding on the Squier Duo Sonic in gold/tan to use as a knock around and travel guitar when I take it outside the house to jam with friends or vacation and a Gibson SG, either the SG Junior with zebra pups or the Carlos Santana original 50s Tribute SG. I'd be using the SG for fuzz rock, better soloing since I like the extra space with a 12' radius and electric blues. Or should I just get one guitar instead of two and buy the Sonic Blue Baja Fender Telecaster for the same reasons as the SG and some extra surf rock and dirty doo wop?
>>
>>60844001
I'd probably get one guitar and save the cost of a second guitar in case online sales or tips wane in later months.

The cost would be the same around $450-550 for the SG with negotiations and $125-250'for the duo sonic and $600-700 for the Tele, I've been saving up scraps for 3-4 months and now I have an extra $300 boost so I can afford them now.

>>60844119
I already own a MiM Strat in surf green which I love and feel no need to buy an MiA one at all I just feel like I would like a different model like a Tele, Les Paul, SG, Duo Sonic, Mustang, Guild S-100, Melody Maker, Es-335-355, Airline Twin Tone etc.

Depends on the band you want to join. I imagine most bands would include what kind of music they play in their ads. If you're looking to get picked up by any band you'll want to have a well-rounded skill set; otherwise think about what you do best and look into bands that match your taste/ability profile.

If I were to start looking for musicians, I would want them to have some theory knowledge (know how to play simple major/minor chords in every key, know major/dominant/minor 7th chords in every key, some understanding of diatonic theory, know the seven modes of the major scale in every key), at least five or six years of serious study/performance on the instrument, maybe the ability to improvise over a standard or to play a piece generally considered to require great technical skill with the instrument (i.e. Jaco's "Teen Town" bass lines).

>>
>>60845409
Green texting aside, they have a time and place. I mainly play sixes, but I do almost all my tracking with sevens. Always found that the easier way to do things.

I've used an eight and nine on a demo awhile back for laughs as well. Writing off the whole concept because some guys hammer along on the low string is silly though.

>>

Yamaha has good beginner models, fender squier jazz, etc.
For the amp, will you play with other people? Because if it's just for practice by yourself then you don't even need a practice amp, get a cheap audio interface and headphones with good bass response, better sound than any practice amp.

>>
>>60846503
It's actually for my little brother to get him started on an instrument, a practice amp is easier I think. I only really play guitar so I don't know much about bass shit.

I was reading about Harley Bentons, think they're only EU though so probably won't get much help here about them. Seems too good to be true though at £100 for a good bass.
>>
>>60846542
Harley Benton is the in-house brand from Thomann, the largest music store in Europe. They're designed and made in China and overall they are decent instruments for the price if you invest some time into them. I wouldn't recommend them for a beginner because you usually have to change stuff around and fiddle with them to make them playable and nice, but if you know how to adjust the action and the neck then they're fine. Electronics will always be shitty with those low end models from China, the soldering is shit, bare wires, no real shielding, etc. But the actual instrument will be decent. As I said, the cheap or intermediate Yamaha stuff is fine, for a practice amp (10-30W usually) you can get something like a BC10 from Warwick they will all sound "meh" but for a beginner they're probably fine. If you want him to play with a drummer then you need something close to a 100W amp, bass needs way more power than guitar to achieve the same volume.

A jazz bass (2 single coil PUs) is standard, the same goes for 2 humbuckers or single coil + split coil. All of those will be totally fine, but humbuckers or single + splitcoil is more versatile IMO. Don't get a precision bass (1 split coil), it gives you a very specific sound but isn't suitable forany kinds of music.
Besides that, if you know how to deal with the things I mentioned above and you're on a strict budget I'd get the Harley Benton progressive 4 string. Just adjust it for him to make it nice and maybe fix up the electronics a bit, after that he'll have a really nice beginners instrument.

I'd like to add that you may have to change out the strings. I'm not sure what Harley Benton uses but some of the cheapo basses come with atrocious strings. That's another 15 to 20 bucks for a set of daddarios, for example. That might be necessary to make it sound good, but with the adjustments already mentioned it should serve your little bro well after that.

I never owned one, so I can't comment on that directly. But I think the general consensus is that they're fine for a beginners instrument, and that's what they're designed as at the end of the day. If he CAN deal with a 34'' scale then I'd go for that, short scale has so many disadvantages and will just make the switch harder later down the line. As for the Harley Benton, if you put in that extra bit of effort and set it up for him it'll be a fine instrument at an absurdly low price, and if something is seriously fucked up you can get your money back within 30 days from Thomann or you can send it in for repair for the next 3 years.

how do i know what to practice, and when, and how much? playing the music i like can't be all there is to it, right? how do i even know how hard the music i'm trying to play is and how long it would take me to get it down?

tl;dr i am absolute shit at learning things without someone to teach but but cannot get a teacher, what do i do

Treating /gg/ as an entity for a moment - we're pretty much at the point of not talking about it anymore. People who don't believe it will zealously abuse anyone who does, and anyone who does believe it will zealously defend it.

It's like a religious argument and is completely pointless to have here.

If you have any idea how magnetic pickups work then this should be very obvious to you. Sound is generated by the strings moving through the magnetic field, anything that doesn't change the strings, the pickup, the magnetic field, etc. is 100% irrelevant to your sound. Different materials might change sustain and other factors because it could absorb the vibrations quicker, but even that effect would be minimal at best.

In short, get a teacher. You'll safe yourself years of re-learning stuff and getting rid of stupid habits that you picked up because nobody told you that you're doing it wrong.

i am a college student, it's kind of out of the question

My opinion is to just practice what you want to play. If guitar is a hobby and you are learning it to have fun, you should have fun learning it.
>>
>>60848114
No, it's not. You have the time, if you need the money then save up for it. Or only take lessons every other or every 4th time or whatever, you need someone who can tell you what you're doing wrong. A YouTube video can't replace a competent teacher.

1. It differs, some people learns faster and some slower.
2. Spend about 30 minutes practice scales, the rest of the time play whatever you want.
3. You can always tell how hard a piece is by listening to it, or watch someone play it on youtube or some shit.
4. Again, nobody knows how fast you learn.

Practice is not mindless repetition "until it gits gud"

You need to break down what you are trying to play into smaller parts and slow them down

Learning a piece with a difficult chord change/ lick/etc?
Slow that change down to a speed you can play it perfectly, then start to speed up and integrate it into the surrounding music.

Listen, Scott Grove is crazy, and he probably annoys the fuck out of most people because of that, but he really knows his shit on guitars. Thats all I'm going to say.

When did pompadour become hipster?

>>60848218
I mainly hate him for his total ass playing though.

>I've literally never met any guitarists
Ftfy
>>
>>60848244
I mean he's a guitar collector, not a professional musician.
>>
>>60848265
That's another reason to hate.

Around the time this started happening

People might take Scott Grove seriously if he wasn't a complete asshole.

Have no gear
Want gear tho
>>
>>60848280
Yep, but that doesn't make his points less valid.

>>60848293
Thats exactly what I just said..

Leo Fender couldn't even play the things he built. The more you know.
>>
>>60848338
That's why Fender instruments are generally shit.
>>
>>60848338
Everybody knows that, Einstein.
Leo built guitars, this guy just buys guitars to gather dust or make ear raping demos.
>>
/gg/, I need your help.
I've been trying to play 21st Century Schizoid Man, and I've been at it for over a year. But the bit at 04:38 of the song is just too fucking fast for me to play. No matter how I approach the entire section, I can't fucking do it. I can play the section but not up to speed to match what Fripp and Co. are doing. What should I do to get myself to be able to play as fast as required?
>>
>>60848298
>Thats exactly what I just said..
Yes. I'm agreeing with you.
>>
>>60848297
Buy gear

>this guy just buys guitars to gather dust or make ear raping demos.
Not to mention the utube wankery.
There are some good tubers with some great tips this isn't one. I saw this asshole cut the strings off with scissors or some shit and I was done.

There is literally no reason to not have gear

Usually either have pompadour or have it slicked back, I've been doing it for ages but yeah it's a cool thing to do now I guess.

>>60848297
This time last year I had fuck all gear

Now I have two live setups and a rig for my bedroom.

Protip: Save that fucking money.

>>60848280
I think he's a wanker too but there's nothing wrong with being a collector, some people admire the instruments but have no interest in learning them to their fullest extent, that's perfectly fine.
>>
>>60848569
And what about the 35'' scale length?
