/mu/'s actually right on this one; the few compelling records that the handful of compelling artists in the scene managed to put out have had their time in the limelight, faded into obscurity, and are now liked and talked about only by the devotees, not the hip kids.
Honestly, the genre didn't have a whole lot of time before it burnt out, simply because of its concept; there's only so much you can do with altered vintage/Japanese music before all the ground has been tread and there's nothing left to do but cover familiar ground. Vektroid essentially did all that by herself; a few other artists did well too, but now they've gone quiet, and all we have left is some truly terrible Bandcamp/Redditwave that does literally NOTHING outside of slowing the music down or compressing it to Hell. People have made humongous compilations of their "life's work", which are 100+ tracks of such gems as "chopped 'n' screwed" Weezer songs that just twist the words around like YTP. If nothing else, Vaporwave has reached the bottom of the barrel in quality, and it'll be a long time before it resurfaces.
