Trips confirm.
I love those. They were discontinued though if I've done my research correctly. The only one I see available brand new is the Alexi Laiho model which has no neck pickup.
Did it blow RR1s feel-wise or sound-wise?

They are now I believe. Part of the weird ESP Standard restructuring a couple years ago.

Prior to that they were still more or less just in the Japanese and Australian market. If you want one there are plenty in the used Australian market. I saw my old one for sale (in a store) for $1200 AUD (~$880 USD).

>Did it blow RR1s feel-wise or sound-wise?
Feel wise mainly, it sounded good too, but I've never been an EMG guy. Heard with a swap they usually sound killer though.

I couldn't justify swapping it myself since I was always playing my Explorer instead.

Fucking EMGs are everywhere. If I was to get a ESP nowadays it would probably be an Arrow. Pic related. Who am I fooling though, I can't pony up 4.5 grand plus flight tickets. And importing is not an option, my country charges 60% tariff.

Question: does anyone knownif old national guitars are worth anything? I know they used to make electrics in like the 70s n most info i can find doesnt give much info and they make steel guitars now i got a national sg is it worth something? Thanx

Joseph your bed's really good to sleep on

What country is that? I'd definitely be looking at the used AUDM market though. Even a 60% tax on something like that SV puts you ahead.

Info from rondomusic.com about the jaguar bass clones for whoever is interested. I emailed them about the pickup placement on the basses, turns out the 3TS basses with the old pickguards don't exist anymore.

The pickup placement is actually identical with all the Ursa 4 models - what you are observing is a slight difference in the body shape. The Ursa 4 EB, VGN and MPP show the current shape that is used for all Ursa 4 models. The Ursa 4 3TS models need to have their photos updated.

Why do schecters look so god damned ugly.
They're the best option for midrange 7 strings and play/sound pretty good, but I find them so ugly I can't get over it.

Also every body should be able to touch a well polished fretless fingerboard at least once in their life. It's like touching heavens.

Target audience for Scheter is edgy teenagers. Edgy Teeangers like over-design or they like black because 'muh metalz'.

All these reasons is why I went to Jackson.
Mahogany body and through maple neck, plays well, frets were good out of the box, after a proper setup a 2mm action /w no fret buzz. I'm happy /w it.
That said, the six I play the most is a flat black Schecter Damien that I picked up for $140. Same 2mm setup and plays just unbelievable.
>>
>>60823181
The wood looks really neat but I still can't get over the whole shape of the guitar.
Also yeah that fret marker's retarded.

>>60823129
They've got some pretty neat more traditional designs.
But the ERG market is filled with "so metuuul" garbage for fucks sake, I don't think there's even a single HSH 7 string.

>>60823301
I never played one of their 7 strings but I don't really like how they look either. RGs probably are my favourite super strat shape
>>
>>60823342
The older designs are ok. Personally I got bored of metal and metal-guitars a while ago, and it shits me that BC Rich/Schecter/Ibanez all went to making mostly metal guitars.
>>
>>60823402
It's really annoying yeah, especially when you consider that Ibanez has no trouble trying to do some more original stuff like fanned frets or ERGs. They should seriously get rid of that dumb as shit iron label series.
Also fenders ERGs when.
>>
>>60823032
Used MIJ Ibanez are almost always better for the price range. Look for an RG7621 RG7620 UV7BK or K7.
>>
>>60823526
Never seen any of those on the used market besides the UV7, but those tend to keep too much of their value to be a good deal.

Does anyone have any tips for beginners?

I'm thinking of picking up an electric guitar so that I can learn to play one. I've always wanted to, but never got around to it. I'm mostly confused at the moment about the type of guitar, because I don't know how much it matters since the amp can, to my understanding, change the sound quite a lot. I like a warm and relaxed sound (See: The Black Keys, Santana etc), basically your normie "classic" stuff.

Apparently a Les Paul is good for beginners and will last me a long time, but it seems very risky to throw 400-500 euro on something that you might not end up using a whole lot.

Someone pls respond. I used to play the piano (10+ years ago) as well as play the guitar in school so I'm not completely oblivious to how chords/notes work and music in general.
>>
I want a Strat. Anyone has experience with G&L equivalent of MIM Strat?
>>
>>60824206
They're great, and the resale prices are very reasonable.
Get one-you won't regret it.
>>
>>60824182
If you throw in around 400 euros on a guitar, you're much more likely to be able to resell it back than if you cheap out.
Go into a store, try and then buy what feels the best. People are fans of LPs but I think they don't sit as well in your lap as a strat does.
>>
>>60824182
Go look for a PRS, everything you want and if you decide to sell it later you'll get a good resale.

>>60824206
I feel like I'd regret not getting a Fender though.

Though a Schecter Dream Machine would also be awesome but they are pretty pricey
>>
>>60824226
I suppose that's true. As for going into a store and trying one out, I wouldn't even know how to do that since I haven't touched a guitar since I was in elementary, and that was an acoustic guitar. So just fiddling with the strings in a shop wouldn't really help I don't think. I am of course going to ask some store personnel and hope I don't come across retarded and see if they can help.

Something I forgot to mention is that I will most likely be using headphones most of the time because I don't like annoying everyone else in my house while I'm just testing things out.

This has me thinking, would it be possible for us to make an external forum where the only sub forums are musician meet up, buy sell trade, and distance collaborations? It could be done with /prod/ and any other general featuring people that make music or play instruments. Only thing I think would make things hard is that it would work against the anonymous nature of this site(which prevents all against one trolling, in most cases), and /gg/ occasionally gets a lot of trolls and shitposters. What do you guys think?

Okay so after looking at some more guitars I still have one question. In terms of the sound, how much do guitars differ from each other? As an example, if I wanted to heavy metal, but bought a guitar that is designed for country, would it be completely impossible to get a really heavy sound from the guitar, or would I have to get a guitar specifically designed for heavy rock/metal?

Just fretting over getting the wrong "style" of guitar as there are some very specific things I'd like to try out, but still not limit myself to only one genre.
I'm the guy that asked about guitars earlier, sorry if this seems like a dumb question.
>>
>>60827005
You can get a metal sound out of pretty much anything. However, it's kinda obvious that an Ibanez 7 string with EMG's is gonna work a lot better for death metal than a semi-hollow Gretsch.

Only thing you need to worry about with an electric are pickups and amp. Don't use a hollowbody unless it'll compliment the type of music you're playing(mostly jazz and blues). Seriously, any solid body guitar will work for any type of music. You're guitar may look awkward if it's super pointy and you're playing indie, but so what.

Seriously
Any solid body guitar
Any passive humbuckers
Any type of music you want to play

Want to primarily play metal?
Add a string and use active humbuckers.

Amp makes more of a difference than guitar.
>>
>>60820501
that's because it doesn't have the pickguard integrated to the body

Not dumb, Pretty much any solid body /w passive pu's is going to be versatile enough to play a wide range of stuff. I'd stay away from active pu's unless your good with knob twisting. Hollow bodies are more country/rockabilly/jazz and I've owned a couple of good Ric's, but I always go back to the solids. I'm the guy that recc'd the PRS it's part of the reason I did.

Alright, thanks for helping, I'll probably end up picking a guitar up in time for the holidays as I have uni right now that I need to concentrate on so that I don't fail all my courses. Because I would probably forget all about school once I got a guitar in my hand.

Once again, thanks to everyone that responded to my posts.

You don't even need to add a string and use actives, just downtune a bit if you want to stay more traditional or downtune until you can't play anything other than open string chugs.

>>
>>60827429
That works well for people who started on a 6th string with passives, like myself. If you're just starting out and with all the competitively priced 7 strings that come loaded with actives you might as well get one. If you realize you don't like playing a 7 string then only use 6 til you can sell it and get a 6 string.

I more put that in there to answer his questions about what different guitars are used for.
>>
>>60827370
I think it means not only having a really good sense of time as in being able to mimic the consistency of a metronome, but also to get different feels by having the control to play slightly ahead or behind the beat; and having a keen awareness of how you can subdivide the beats.
>>

Generally a drummer that
1. Stays on time
2. Can improvise and add small extras to his play (ghost notes, random rudiments here and there etc) while still staying on time
3. Has great control over how hard/soft he hits his drums and can alternate while staying on time
4. Stays the fuck on time

Here's a guy I think has great groove:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uhKVLgMxe7Q

Here's a random dude I took 3 seconds to find on youtube without groove playing the same song:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=APP4oeju5P0
(Note how oftenly he drifts in and out of time, that's his biggest problem here)

Most of the time just staying on time and knowing the songs you're playing well enough to fuck around with your own drum rolls is enough to make people think you've got groove. And most of what makes a drummer groovy is just being able to add small nuances to their play while still staying on time.

Also staying on time is really important. Without that every time you try to improvise something you'll just sound like you don't know what you're doing. You should be a human metronome if you want to have groove.
>>
>>60824310
I also think Metallica was a bit emasculated by him. Say what you want about creative superiority, that's pretty subjective and their styles aren't *that* different. But back in the Kill 'em all days, from a technical standpoint, Mustaine ran circles around anyone in Metallica.

>>
>>60827005
If you use high gain, as is very common in metal, the differences between guitars is actually pretty minimal. Reason being that the extreme amounts of gain distorts everything anyway, so all that you really hear is a sea of mud and noise.
Humbuckers are inherently lower noise than singlecoil pickups; that's why they're so much more common in metal. That said, singlecoils are generally lower output than humbuckers, which keeps everything more tonally balanced and less muddy. That is, if you can deal with the hum, which, again, is quite present at high gain, but people have used them in metal, and to great effect.
As for solid vs hollow body, the hollow body guitars will feed back at high volumes. This can be controlled and used as an effect if you get skillful at it. But most people just think it's a hassle and get a solidbody guitar so they don't have to deal with it.
>>

Metallicas only good album is Kill Em All.

Mustaine had Megadeth putting out killer thrash into the mid 90s.

Just don't be a faggot that plays in drop tunings.

Play a 6-string in E standard or be a huge faggot.

Only exception is E flat standard if your singer sucks.

This is for metal btw.
>>
>>60828719
Drop tunings are laziness. You don't need thicker strings for d standard, if you're being anal about your setup dropping your low e could very well change your intonation and action ever so slightly for that. They're whole popularity is based around "I can play power chords fast" or "I can chug open power chords while pointing at my girlfriend in the audience"

>>
Standard = Open > dropped

Dropped is absolutely pointless and makes it harder to have the 5th when placing the root of your chord on the second string anyway.
>>
>>60828887

People who play .11s or higher in standard, what the fuck are you doing?

>>
>>60829032
I played in a punk band for a while in high school, I played 12s because they.could take more abusive strumming, I played 8s once and broke a string after about 6 practices.
>>
>>60829032
Less chance to fret your note sharp, and you can still bend your notes if you have a tremolo. You're also able to hit your strings harder without making the note sharper than it is.
>>
>>60827005
Yes you can get pretty good sounding metal tone out of a Gretsch.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zfy-9lllf90

I'm pretty sure the Gretsch here had no modifications/pickup swaps, neither do The Paul 78's (which still are a steal for the money, you won't go wrong with this guitar if you can get your hands on a decent one for any genre.).

I prefer all around guitars that fit any music style. (Les Pauls for example) Because if you grow up and develop a wide musical taste, and you want to play something completely different (maybe with a group of friends that all have different musical taste) you kinda look like a faggot with a Jackson rr24

Amp is where you actually make the decision what style you want to play. Don't expect to be playing Death Metal with a Fender Twin (even though you probably could get close with the right pedals) or Country with a Marshall JCM.

>>60829299
No, but I am. I have nothing against tuning low. Drop tuning is when you tune your low string a step down from standard so your 5th string is a 5th higher than your 6th, creating a power chord when played open

Standard
EADGBe

Drop D
DADGBe

D standard
DGCBAD

Drop C
CGCBAD

Drop tuning's only benefit is making the already easy power chord easier to play.
>>
>>60829191
Not to be an asshole or anything, but you fret way too hard if you have a tendency to fret sharp, unless you play on a scalloped board or something.

Way harder to bend in tune using the trem.

In my book strumming out of tune is strumming excessively hard.

I took what I thought was a bowlshit class at Berklee called "Awareness Training for Musicians" and it was actually incredible. Try to find some articles or videos about that sort of thing. Learning to be fully aware of your body (muscles, nerves, posture, etc) prevents you from subconsciously tensing up and hurting yourself. For example, you could be a clarinet player, and always be curling your toes subconciously, and then you're getting cramps or having foot problems later in life. It's really hard to prevent if you don't think through your body in a methodical fashion. It's probably really hard to do by yourself, but with some guidance it's mind-blowingly helpful.
>>
>>60829723
Take things slower, if you have to tense up to play something it usually means you're trying to play something that's too hard for you. Nothing wrong with it, just means you need more practice.
>>
>>60829809

Maple necks wear down cooler, mostly a visual thing.

No.

>only two control pots
Only one volume actually (the other thing is the toggle switch), which is the ideal amount of pots. The 1-10 on a tone knob is a scale of how good the guitar sounds, no reason to ever take them off 10 imo. Hell, the volume knob does a better job at being a tone knob than the actual tone knob does. So no tone knobs for me tyvm.

I know the les paul isnt winning any grand design awards, then again I wouldnt think this guitar is best guitar out right now, its just right for me.

That being said, I'm not sure what I think the best guitar of 2015 is... I know Jackson stepped up their game, comparing the dinky I bought this year to a kelly of some years back, but I don't think thats enough to warrant guitar of the year.

>and then he said "Only one volume actually (the other thing is the toggle switch), which is the ideal amount of pots. The 1-10 on a tone knob is a scale of how good the guitar sounds, no reason to ever take them off 10 imo. Hell, the volume knob does a better job at being a tone knob than the actual tone knob does. So no tone knobs for me tyvm."

You know you suck when you struggle to make this

I'll eventually get better tho

Oh no, the females on the image are laughing at my preferred amount of potentiometers :(

nope, they are laughing about your wrong conceptions about tone knobs. You clearly couldn't use one to save your life.
>>60831702
nice, great choice m8

>>60831771
Enlighten me on correct use of the tone knob then friendo.
>>
>>60831771
Not him, but what am I supposed to do with a tone knob? I play mostly rock and metal, but whenever I'm trying out a jazzy clean chord progression, I roll back the tone knob just a smidge. That's about the most use I get out of it.
>>
>>60831702
I always wanted one, that's dope.

Pretty sure Jomy Hondrecks painted his geetar with '57 Chevy lacquer.

Any newer lacquer than that and you basically sound like shit.

It can make the guitar sound pretty different. For example roll back the tone on a tele a bit and soon it will be sounding close to a Les Paul.

I kek'd, thanks anon

Yeah, no.

At least not on a standard SS tele

>>60831817
If you suddenly notice, "damn this guitar is sounding kind of shrill at the moment" you can dial it back and transition pretty directly into "buttery tone" territory.

dude penises lmao

My instinct in that situation has always been to roll back the treble on the amp.

rolling off the tone makes you lose not only treble, but also dynamics, harmonics, and clarity.
>>
>>60832065
I said "close", not that it nails the tone completely. Use the neck pickup and dial the tone, you'll be in the ballpark. And it will get much closer to a Les Paul than a Les Paul trying to emulate a Tele will ever get.
>>60832112
of course, no amount of tweaking can eliminate that difference completely

the nitrocellulose finish on my gibbo has made the case smell like marshmallows, is it possible to live in the case form now on?

I want a new guitar, but I don't feel attracted toward any (Besides the BC Rich Bich 10 which I won't buy due to reasons). I want a new one because the one I have needs constant set up/repair (although never more than an hour).

But I'm so jaded that the thought of getting a new guitar to replace the super shitty guitar I have makes no sense in my mind. I rarely have trouble with any guitar, at most it's simply due to the neckjoint being too high due to the shape, so I don't know how to justify "oh I totally need a new superstrat/tele/jaguar/jazzy" if I can just buy multiple sets of pickups for the same guitar, rent an amp for the night (if the venue doesn't have already a shitty one), have a set of boss pedals or a podHD500 and that's it.

When I was a kid I lusted for a Jackson RR, or a BC Rich, all 24 frets, trems, etc. I thought they would make me this diabolical shredmaster.
Then I played for indie bands so I borrowed squiers and epis to look part of the band, back in the day they sucked balls but new strings and a simple setup make them work for the night.
Now no guitar gets me a boner (besides the BCR Bich), Gibsons quality seems to be riding on nostalgia, Fender is ok I guess but a squier is better value, Jackson is alright, Charvel is expensive for what it is, Ibanez is alright (their jazz models are pure sex though), ESP went to fucking shit with this weird restructuring and lineup, Dean has shit quality, PRS has this retarded bridge and why are their neck joints so high up? schecter is ok I guess but why do they look so 90s goth?

I'm thinking of a middlerange nonthreatening color superstrat, or go retarded and get a flying v to always look out of place with the bands I play for.

kek, i'd love to live surrounded by marshmallow smell

Check out Parker, G&L, and Suhr.
>>
>>60832361
I seriously think Gibson sprays their cases with Marsmallow scent from the factory.
>>
>>60832407
poly is what they put on 100 dollar squiers you fuckin mong

they reserve tone wood magician magic nitro for blooz lawyer gibshits
>>
>>60823032
To be fair, their weird semi-hollows aren't too bad. Plus, the dyna-sonic/ mini-humbucker pickups are pretty fucking awesome
>>
>>60829032
I use 11's on my strat and play in a surf band. Bending notes over a full step generally isn't a problem
>>60829064
I'm sorry but you can't expect me to believe that there's no tonal difference between 9's and 11's or even something with a larger difference like 8's and 12's
>>
>>60832470
Those three are nice but I feel like the parker is overpriced (maybe simply due to low production) they do play nice though and the piezo (?) is interesting, G&L feels overpriced when I can buy a squier VM and put aftermarket pickups in it, and suhr isn't sold here, at least I haven't found any online or in stores.
>>
>>60832670
I think the reason G&L guitars are so expensive is they run 'em all through a plek machine at the factory (as far as I know).
