do mediocre musicians know that they make mediocre music?

having known multiple local groups from a small rural town in the middle of nowhere, no they don't.

I'm by no means a professional but I haven't played an instrument in years and I still to this day have more performance experience than any local band I know. When I would give them advice on very basic stuff like EQ and variations between studio playing and live performance they simply wouldn't listen to me because I played jazz while they played shoegaze or whatever. Even though the advice I was giving was on basic fundamentals of music.

Of course this is not true for everyone, some mediocre musicians will take note of their flaws and improve, same is true for video game players, sports players, anything where you are tasked to perform and can improve.

Can you explain a bit more on how they sucked?

OP here, lmao they sound like pretentious dickbags with a superiority complex. Two musicians should be able to talk about the very fundamentals of live and studio performance without genre being a issue.
