This man is not a "legend"

I hate to disparage someone so soon after their death, but I take issue with the way people have chosen to remember him.

Eddie Vedder sings like Eddie Vedder because he is Eddie Vedder and cannot not sing like Eddie Vedder. Before Eddie Vedder, nobody in mainstream music was singing like Eddie Vedder. It was only after he became the most instant success out of all the 90's singers that people started to say, "Hey maybe I should go BWEHHHEHEAYYYEAHHHRAWWWN," which they all did, and they all made millions of dollars. Scott Weiland was one of these people.

Scott Weiland's imitation was at best somewhat less offensive as someone like Scott Stapp, and his songwriting was certainly a notch above most of his contemporary grunge imitators, but I am extremely worried that his death has elevated him to a place in rock history where he does not deserve to be. The damn shame is that he was actually a pretty gifted vocalist when he wasn't affecting a yarl, but STP's music makes me cringe because he doesn't sound like himself, he sounds like what was profitable.

tl;dr Scott Weiland was a part of the corporate grunge cash-in and the fact that he is being remembered as a "legendary rocker" and "one of the greatest voices of his generation" makes me extremely uncomfortable.

I outgrew grunge as a music style/corporate hype over a decade ago. but I guess this band's pop hits still get heard on rock radio, right? so he regrettably still hadn't had a chance to fade into blissful obscurity with his millions saved from the CD era.

it's sad yet another person that earned millions from some combination of talent, luck, hard work, and compromised musical principles (and/or mediocre taste) still couldn't keep it together and blew it all on his fucked up personal life.

Neither of those bands had any coat tails. In fact, both of them saw way more mainstream success than they ever in a million years would have as a direct result of Nirvana blowing up.

This is a completely subjective series of statements that have no connection to reality. Axl was many times the frontman Scott ever was and Velvet Revolver pales in comparison to GnR.

This is one of those obscure facts it's hard to find a source for beyond anecdotes (there aren't any recordings as far as I know) unless you were there yourself or know someone who was, but the most reputable of all anecdotes is from Anthony kiedis autobiography.

https://books.google.ca/books?id=VUSZAAAAQBAJ&pg=PT203&lpg=PT203&dq=scar+tissue+Eddie+vedder+cover+band&source=bl&ots=Lxqc9uKJNy&sig=F74NtTBMJSUF6JAMhljH46uyQfo&hl=en&sa=X&ved=0ahUKEwimrLyjt8PJAhXm4IMKHcRqAVwQ6AEIGjAA#v=onepage&q=scar%20tissue%20Eddie%20vedder%20cover%20band&f=false

This is pretty well known amongst die hard panel jam fans though, but if you want to continue to be in denial go ahead.

Even if it's true, it's not nearly the same thing. When you're in a cover band, you do somewhat of an imitation of the original vocalist. It's not the same as using a voice that's not your own to get famous off your "original" music. I don't even know why you brought it up desu senpai.

Vat? They don't really sound that much like PJ. PJ's sound is more like stadium rock with two guitars and lots of solos.
>>
>>60806569

The Vedder comparison is bullshit.

Somebody post some stuff from the Mighty Joe Young(aka pre-Core STP) demo where Weiland does his crooning. Recorded while Vedder was still spending his time surfing in California.
>>
>>60812491
Case in point. Core was their debut album and they didn't have as much creative control as they would on subsequent records. The Vedder impersonation and radio-friendly songs were mainly done to get their name out there.

It's no different from Nevermind and Ten being much more commercial than the material those bands released later.
>>
>>60812038
>>60811986
Like, who cares about the semantics of STP's "genre". Funny thing is, I'm sure atleast half of /mu/ isn't even old enough to remember 9/11, let alone the 90's, so the cultural significance of STP and that time is lost on them. I don't think anyone is equating Scott Weiland with a genius of any sort, but to those of us who enjoyed him and STP, today sucks.

yes it is
>>
>>60806816
They're more pop-punk than anything. So-called "punk" kids all over the States realized they could just be lazy douches who wrote catchy verse-chorus-verse songs whose lyrics were nothing but word vomit that made no sense once Nevermind got huge. Punk had a message to convey in simplistic, down-to-earth lyrics and music; Nirvana and pop-punk just took a shit, put it on record, and watched the cash fall into their lap while they were still on the toilet. The fact that Love's almost certainly still getting those checks for Kurt refusing to crack (long after he cracked) all over the radio and in the local Wal-Mart just shows that Nirvana, no different than Blink-182 and Lit, are a product, not a legitimate band.
>>
>>60812648

>So-called "punk" kids all over the States realized they could just be lazy douches who wrote catchy verse-chorus-verse songs whose lyrics were nothing but word vomit that made no sense once Nevermind got huge.

Big deal. RHCP were doing word vomit songs well before Nevermind. You think Cobain originated that style?
>>
>>60812582
The sad thing is that most of /mu/ is probably deeper in their 20s than I am; aside from the memers who only come here to shitpost funny maymays about music in a slightly more concentrated manner than they would on /b/, they're twentysomethings who want to shit all over the band and the man simply because he's a popular guy whose death is being mourned all over none other than rock radio nationwide, even as they play Pop Evil, Godsmack, and slightly more STP in "respect".

I don't even like STP or Weiland that much, but really, it's kind of sad, as juvenile as it is. Oh well, you can't expect much more from a place that's become a meme factory that shits on music it likes as much as it praises it.

Nah bro, what I'm saying is he does the grunge growl thing all over an EP they recorded in like 1989.

There's actual Core songs on it! Early versions of Wicked Garden, Where the River Goes, and Naked Sunday.

I actually think he toned it down a bit on those songs by the time Core was released.

Regardless this argument is like 20 years past settled.....too bad most people are just on the wrong side of it.

No, I know they didn't originate it, but in trading the in-your-face sexuality and machismo for suburban white kid boredom and truly meaningless lyrics (supposedly gleaned from snippets of his surely sterling poetry), and whininess to spare, they did pave the way for the legions of similarly-inclined whine rockers who would come to rebel against society in such meaningful ways as not brushing/going out and dyeing their hair.

>>60813031

Even if grunge was on the lips of West Coast underground club scenes , Mighty Joe Young was still way ahead of the curve compared to many other bands that get erroneously lumped in with them, like Bush, Collective Soul, Sponge, and Candlebox. Hell, Temple of the Dog didn't release their album until 1991 and that was basically Vedder's audition to Pearl Jam.

Influence =/= sound like blend of

Elvis Presley influenced a lot of groups who started out in the mid-60's, but only Elvis really sounded like Elvis. I couldn't imagine what David Gilmour's guitar would sound like if the implications you just made were true. An influence should be used to inspire an artist to make his own music, not to be completely copied by said artist.

Hey man I don't consider STP any huge deal, but honestly Scott was there and he is one of the top recognized frontmen of his age. I don't care who thinks how good any of it was, but I mean, if you're so upset about him being called a "legend" by only SOME people, and on 4chan no less...
He's more legendary than you or I or a lot of faggots on this board in a totally literal sense at least.
I'm just saying who cares. People talk about other people after they die and the bands they were in. Most important thing is if you found something in the music they made, and if you didn't, fine.

Yeah, when stp first came out, they ripped off pearl jam, but if you listened to more than their first 2 adults you would find Scott actually has a huge vocal range. He was a it imitators for sure, but his vocal range was among the greatest. All you fags do is "lol, I liked it before it was popular, now it sucks" you people and teeny girls have all contributed to the shit that is called music. I'll be over here listening to what I like and staying away from the radio, Disney radio, and mtv. >>
>>60806569
Maybe but he was a guy that liked to try new things. Maybe at first, to get the band's foot in, the group went the Eddie Veder route to then do their own shit later on (which they did).

I don't think he deserve the sudden great accolade but compared to what's around right now, compared to anything at all, the "mediocre" of yesterday probably is something that could be good enough to be a stepping stone for tomorrow immediately.

Don't get me wrong, he and STP were one of those bands that were just above one-hit wonder status. And he's no trailblazer for sure. But he tried to go places where either people forgot and left behind or played around to what was indeed commercially viable and sometimes in that pursuit, made something that people got behind and liked.
