So what do you use?
For me a Sony Walkman A25 paired with some Sennheiser IE80's.
I find the A25 doesn't sounds quiet as nice as my old A829 or even the older A3000. But having 128GB sortage plus 16GB on the player is nice.
Tried some high res music but can't really tell much of a difference from a .flac file.

Sansa clip + with rockbox installed so I can mount a bigger memory card

Sound quality is great to me, at least on par with Sony Walkman. Plus I like the feel of it. Too bad it doesn't play flacs though

It's a nice unit. But personally don't think it sounds as good as it should. Not that it sounds bad just not quiet as good as my older A829.
Build quality it feels a little flimsy on the back but the front feels nice with the brushed metal.
Battery life is impressive. The UI is pretty easy to use and I'm all for physical buttons.
MicroSD up to 128GB. Don't buy into the High-res audio bullshit.

Another note is that the player struggles with higher impedance headphones. I got some HD518 (50Ω) and they sound pretty flat compared to the IE80's (16Ω).
So you might need a headphone amp.

even at the time they were released, they were still looked at as shit. I literally used to be laughed at for owning one. i think they did a pretty bad job at marketing them and for some reason people got upset they couldnt use apps with it. it was cheaper than an ipod and better than one in just about every way. but i guess even ipods are pretty much done now unless youre a big music person, which isn't much of a market so that's why theres all these little niche players coming out. the best thing is probably gonna be in about 3 years when we can pop in a 500 gig sd card into a phone

Enjoy that while it lasts. I had to throw mine away after 6 years because the battery wouldn't last more than 2 hours listening to music, or 10 minutes of browsing music.
I currently use my Android (Xperia Z3 Ultra), but I'm thinking of getting a custom ROM for it or buying a dedicated music player because the "listening to music at this volume will permanently damage your hearing" warning which turns the volume down to 50% is driving me mad.

The Walkmans are drag and drop. Plus the A15 and A25 all have microSD expansion plus physical buttons.
the two versions are pretty much the same apart from the A25 uses bluetooth 3.0 instead of 2.1 and it also comes with noise cancelling earphones (UK model does anyway)
Touch screens are a nightmare when you're driving. want to skip a track. Here's a tiny hit point for you to tap before the screen turns off.
I have an X3 gen 2, but I'm thinking of selling/trading it for a Sony A17/A27 because the wheel is absolute shit and the interface is kind of dumb (it doesn't even have a fucking clock).

How are playlists? I had a really old Walkman DAP (A808), and the only way to make playlists was to right click a folder and there was an option to "create playlist". Didn't support m3u/playlist files and couldn't mix songs from different folders. It was retarded.

I've never had the need to make playlists. It can be done on the player. you'll need to do it one song at a time to a "bookmark list". not sure if there is a song limit to it though. Hope that helps.

Except for the sync software. That was shit. You also couldn't display non-Roman characters, and that was sort of frustrating.
I still really liked mine. I think I'll try using my phone (LG G4) for a while, and if I'm not happy with that, then I'll see what's out there at this point.
