Don't think I'll get anything new for a while except maybe some pedals.

The only effects I have is an Ibanez PT5 which is not very usable for most things.

Good, especially the newer ones. I'd put them at about the same quality as mexican fenders of the late 90s/early 00s.

They're inexpensive and if you're not totally happy with the sound, they're easy as shit to mod so you can do pretty much whatever with them.

What's the EHX you got taped up to the right of your Moog? What kind of patch cables do you use?
>>
>>60802058
Get Reaper, you can try it for free and if you run out of trial time you can keep using it, it will just pop up a nag every time you open it but it will retain full functionality. And it can create dummy ASIO devices so you can route your media player through it and play on top. If you have a 64 bit system download and install both 64 bit and 32 bit versions, but use the 64 bit version. You need to install the 32 bit version for compatibility reasons. I used to use Audition, tried Ableton, didn't like it, tried Reaper and never looked back.

I'm looking to buy a couple of my first pedals and i need some help. I'll be playing bass guitar as a lead with my friend on drums and synths -- we'll mostly be experimenting with noise rock, post-punk, synth pop, maybe some shoegaze, or just walls of sound in general (i have a Jamman Solo XT looper pedal in the mail).

Basically im looking for some pedal recs that can get me a wide range of noisy sounds. Even some synth based pedals that sound like this would be cool if they aren't like $200+
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qJ8seAkLC94

I don't even necessarily care if they're analog as long as i can get some nice sounds. Recs for specific pedals would be ideal but what "types" of pedals should i be looking to start off with if i want to go with this sound? Not really sure if an overdrive or fuzz pedal would be best, or if there is some other combo w/ one of the two i should look into. Also how essential are delay pedals?

pls help.

Bottom Channels great. I can understand you not liking the top one. You kind of have to either be into metal or into combining distortions to get the sound you want.

In all the forms I consulted before buying it the posters all seemed to either love it or fucking hate it.

Def get an od. IMO at least
>>
I'm thinking of getting into bass, and I have around a 600-1000 budget, is a fender precision bass the best I can get for my money? and what kind of amp? I'm clueless about that...
Also any good delay pedals? I was recommended a boss dd20, is it good enough, or is there anything better?
>>
>>60803571

Silicon or germanium?
>>
>>60803616
it's not that i hate it, or that i don't like "metal" distortions, it's just that i don't use it much.
honestly what's keeping me from selling it is that they're out of production and the price could go up eventually, so i could lose money and a good pedal
>>
>>60803659
You can't buy instruments via specs. Just go to a store and try some basses in the pricerange and buy something that feels, looks and sounds good.
>>
>>60803668
Germanium, AC127 though because it was the only available model, so it's NPN. Did a mod that consists on replacing 3 fixed resistors with preset resistors so I didn't need to buy and try a big amount of transistors. I don't remember where I got that mod from though, probably pisotones.com. It's in Spanish so if you speak it take a look.
>>
>>60803659
Essentially what >>60803698 said
You have to go out and try different basses to see which has the sound you like and what you'll be comfortable playing.
Are you looking for amps too, or is it just the bass?
>>
>>60803659
If you are just starting bass, avoid pedals. The primary purpose of the bass is to be the heart of the band and a time keeper with the drums, and support the low end of the sonic spectrum of the band. Pedals will distract you from this. Get your shit down first, then worry about bass pedals.
>>
>>60803659
there are some great old basses for less than that.
Peavey t-40, for example. Or those Greco SG copies.
you should try some newer and older out and decide what you want, but i recommend you buy used, and try getting CIJ or american if you're going fender.

for the amp, acoustic B100 is very decent, fairly loud and cheap too.
Delays, if you don't know what kind of delay you want you can get a Line 6 DL4 or a TC electronic flashback, which have lots of nice sounding mods you can choose from.
>>
How much is a capacitor change on a 90's Peavey head? Or a good guess?
>>
>>60803698

>>60803759
I'm mostly going to be alone until I finish HS, so I'm thinking having pedals will let me do crazy stuff, like having a lead bass over a trumpet drone, or stuff like that, but yeah I don't have the $ right now, it's just to have a reference when I need it.
>>60803801
I'll look into that, peavey t40 never go below 700 even and that would leave me without money for amp, but I'll look into that amp and delay, thanks a lot man.
>>
>>60804006
>I'm mostly going to be alone until I finish HS
This is an 18+ board
>so I'm thinking having pedals will let me do crazy stuff
You need to learn the basics before you attempt "crazy stuff".
>>
>>60804006
Acoustic, Hartke, and Orange make some good combos for decent price. But it's usually the same thing with amps as it is for basses; try some that are in your price range and compare their capabilities.
Since you're not going to be gigging or anything you won't need to worry much about power or getting a huge ass speaker. Get something that does it's job, and well.
>>
>>60804099
Yeah I'll try those as well when I go over, my school has a really sweet peavey amp, it's probably too expensive for me, but I'll use it as a quality standard.

What concerns should I have buying an AB/Y pedal? I plan to use it to switch between/mix two pedal chains into the same amp, because some of them are tonekillers.

You can generally assume that more power = more volume. But cheaper made products may convert more of that power into heat instead of sound.

you could get a bass cab if your guitar amp has a external speaker output. You'll be missing features from bass amps like the compressor and limiter though, but you'll be able to use distortion. I did that sometimes with my friend's Laney LX-35R and my 15" cab

can someone explain to me what the difference between a distortion channel on an amp and a distortion pedal is? is the distortion channel in an amp essentially just a built in distortion pedal, or is it something completely different?

I was going through some of my old photos and found this. Fucked me up for a good while, but I learned to use my pinky for much more.

>>60806254
Distortion or overdrive is all about cascaded gain stages. A distortion channel will generally have a pre and post (or master volume). A distortion pedal provides a boosted guitar signal to the first gain stage of your amp to achieve the same effect.
>>
>>60806233
thanks lad I'll look into those
>>
>>60806364
so say for example i want to create a pedal that mimics a certain type of distortion from a certain amp, would i be able to do that and would it sound exactly the same?
>>
>>60806485
what amp?
>>
>>60806254
I'm no sound engineer but this is how I understand it, please correct me if I'm wrong

"Natural" distortion is achieved when your signal has too much gain for the tubes in your tube amp to handle which causes clipping of the sound waves and thus distortion

On a tube amp, the high gain channel would be intended for this effect

On a solid state amp, the effect would be applied via circuitry, the same way a distortion pedal would, so think of it as a built-in effect like reverb on some amps

Technically a pedal could act as a gain boost to achieve the former or a distortion effect of its own, and often (like the EHX soul food) does both.

>>60806485
It's called amp modelling and it's a pretty popular thing these days. Lots of digital effects pedals offer modelling of particular amps and some amps even have that function built in.

Some high end digital effects processors like the Axe FX offer tone matching and I've heard mixed opinions about those

As far as making your own pedal for this purpose I can't really help you
>>
>>60806556
i'm just using it as an example, but how about something with pretty high gain channels like a dual rectifier

>>60806610
i understand natural distortion, but i'm wondering more about how it goes from natural distortion to something crazy like a dual rectifier

i'm not going to build a pedal or anything, i'm just curious how it works

>>
>>60806722
>natural distortion to something crazy like a dual rectifier
There's no difference, just varying degrees of the same thing. You can do it on pretty much any amp, but the voicing will vary. For example, on the reissue black/silverface fenders, you can channel chain them and get heavy mesa-like overdrive. The normal channel hits the vibrato channel hard as hell so you use a padding resistor to tame it a bit. From there you can revoice as you see fit.
>fuck with the tone stack (messing with midrange values can make a big difference)
>change coupling cap values

Ive been playing for close to two years, just learning tabs off the internet and watching youtube. I have a cheap squier strat, and a 90s Kramer baretta neck through that came with cheap humbuckers out of a schecter or something. I set it up myself, but I dont think I did it perfectly. My main amp is a 80s or 90s peavy basic 80 bass amp, with a korg toneworks AX1G effects pedal. All this except the Kramer I got for free. Believe it or not, it sounds pretty fucking decent, but Ive never played anything else to compare it to.

I want to upgrade to a better amp, and I think I need better pickups. Sound wise, I want it to sound as close to your classic metallica/ megadeath sound as I can get. I play a lot of other stuff, but thats the focus I want my gear to have. I only need it to be loud enough to make my ears bleed in my room, no gigs for me yet.
Do I need a amp head and separate speaker? And what sorts of effects? The little multifunction korg thingy I have is nice but I want to get the sound as authentic as possible, so I guess I have to copy the real band's gear, right? Problem is, I dont have much more than a couple hundred, say $500-600.

Amps are bigger and generally have a lot more power to work with 120/240 volts and a few amperes. This is ultimately what amplifies your sound. The devices inside the amp will modulate the power supply of the amp through the speakers according to the signal produced from your guitar.

Pedals generally run off of 9 volts. They can bump your signal up just over line level, or some can act as amps themselves in a sense that they can drive a speaker. Pedals are generally sold as convenient little platforms to tweak your sound.

depends on the sound you're after. I can't really help you much because of lack of experience, but I know for sure that open cabs sound different to closed cabs. What genres would you be playing? Which are your main influences?

PS: don't limit yourself to the Laney range because you happen to own a Laney head. "Mismatching" brands has been done forever and sometimes you get the sound you want from different brands. A typical example: Peavey 5150+Mesa 4x12 cab.
Also, would the new cab be used alone or in conjunction with another one?

The speaker is more important than the cab. Open will have less bass. Closed will have more bass and will have more of the cab's involvement in the sound.

I'm not really sure m8, all I was saying is don't limit yourself to the head's brand. Since it will be used alone this makes even more sense.

I love the look of moog pedals, they make me think of the 70s and 80s.

ello, newbie here. although i did have a guitar for a month in the past, but other than that i barely know shit about guitars.

i obviously want to get back into the wonderful world of git-tars. anyway, i'm debating on whether to get one of those squier strat packs or an sg off of craigslist.

i think i will get a fender frontman 10g amp btw. perhaps you kind gents can suggest a different decent budget amp.

Just set up my pickup height for a beautiful clean tone. I'm now wondering about the pickup angle. Many pickups can be tilted, which I've heard has an effect on tone. Is the idea just to always keep it level, or are there good tones to be had from a tilted pickup?
