Not saying that it's not an interesting story, but Gira really has capitalized on his childhood to build a mythology for himself and it's something to be wary of in artists in general. Just my experience, that focusing on stories and stuff, even very subconsciously, can really distort your perception of the music.

i don't think it does make it more genuine. that's kind of what i'm saying. i think that he really tried to push a persona in the 80s and 90s (well, i don't need to say that, it's pretty obvious from the interviews that he did) and that kind of acting kind of allows the music to deflect criticisms of being over the top. but really, even if it were entirely genuine, most of Swans music deals a lot more with themes that aren't really touched by his "Fucked up past". And I think that putting that block up, "oh, this aspect of their music doesn't really seem to make that much sense, but he was in prison at age 13 so I must be in the wrong here" is a bad approach for really critiquing, understanding, and appreciating music. just my two cents though, I understand that the personality draw is pretty hard to avoid in a community like this
