The more commercial pop acts are bad but there are plenty of significant, talented artists, and they have a wonderful scene when it comes to experimental rock. It's a culture thing, I'm guessing. For some reason (and this should apply to Japan too to some extent), holding onto traditional music in some way, shape or form boxes a lot of musicians in into a certain cultural style.
I'm Afrikaans from South Africa, and until about 2010, all we had was generic Techno/Sokkie kind of music. It fell in line with traditional Afrikaans bullshit, but with a new scene full of young people doing shit and internationalising the market, it slowly got better. Now we have normal music too.
