This is part of the problem with a lot of /mu/rants who try to into jazz or classical.
They tend to value timbre over nearly every other aspect of music.
Which is understandable, it's much easier to talk about the type of sound being made rather than the actual composition of the pieces.
That album Is a really interesting dedication to Charlie Parker and builds on his use of contrafact and reharmonisation of old pieces. It's a really inspired way of paying homage to him because it's something he would have really been able to get behind because it's like a play on what he did in his time but in a modern post-bop context.
