Holy shit, this is GOAT. I always associated them with that shitty Iran song, but the rest of the album is great New Wave

tfw I used to have this on cassette and listened to it a lot when I was 12, now it's gone forever
>>60726374
for how popular that song is this album is ironically very underrated

>>60726435
adore this song
>>60726435
yeah, this song's an 80s masterpiece. think it was used in a few movies, but can't remember which.
Space Age Love Song is pretty great but that's honestly about it. P forgettable album overall
>>60726408
what happened? it ran so far away?
>>60726506
Messages is alright
DNA sounds like a Gary Numan song
The rest are good background

They are my favorite of the bands you associate with the stereotypical "80s"
This record had 2 of their 4 best songs (I Ran & Space Age Love Song; others being Nightmares & The More You Live, The More You Love) and the rest was good too. I will defend their later albums, also. In fact I think it's arguable their 2nd album was as good as this.
Their 4th was also actually better than their 3rd, despite how the former got shit on harder.
Their main problem was even though they'd have good song ideas or parts, they began to just on for multiple minutes too long, unchanging.

desu this song is a GOAT. I always wanted more music like it.
>>60726374
>that shitty Iran song
>implying I Ran isn't the best pop song written in the last 40 years
Do you want New Wave or do you want the truth?
>>60726735
the first 1:30 is top-tier. the verses and chorus are cringe tier
>a girl like YEW-EEW-OUUUU
>>60726435
I like how that riff sort of sounds like seagulls
>>60726796
Dude, name ONE other instance in songwriting history where somebody successfully used the word "tawny". GOAT.
>>60726697
>more music like it
the closest thing i know that elicits the same feel is Age of Consent
>the more you live, the more you love
good call. that + space age were the ones i always repeated.

But wait, forgot I just discovered & fell in love with Tears for Fears. THEY're actually the best 80s, and so severely overlooked it's saddening.
They ranged from:
(B-side of Mad World)

to

Ah agreed. I grew up with Seagulls greatest hits, but hearing Age of Consent definitely hit that vein for me when I heard it just a few years ago. + Definitely do check out tracks like Nightmares and some of the other 2nd album tracks in particular if you haven't

>Nightmares

You keep stopping when you could be walking
Looking at the pictures on the wall
You keep quiet when you should be talking
You just don't make any sense at all
Remember when you were much younger
And you were lying in your bed
Among the satin sheets and pillows
Your mother there to ease your head
Mama Mama I keep having nightmares
Mama Mama Mama am I ill?
Mama Mama Mama hold me tightly
Mama Mama Mama do you love me still?
>>60726844
oh, and omd's "2nd thought," but it's really a stretch. more repetitive without the addictive chorus.
or maybe tears for fears "everybody wants to rule the world," but that's really not overtly synthy. top song tho.
>>60726949
Will check that out, never heard of it.
Glad you mentioned TFF also though! Would love to see them discussed more here. Very unique band, I feel.
>>60726374
Amazing album indeed. Highly recommended.
The Wedding Singer kind of made Flock of Seagulls uncool (that fat guy with the bad Flock of Seagulls haircut asking Adam Sandler is he likes them) and of course them being labelled as gimmicky one-hit wonder with I Ran, but they remain criminally underappreciated.
Man I fucking love threads like these. 80's new wave shit like Flock of Seagulls is really what got me into the music I listen to today. I can remember listening to it on the radio when I was younger.
>>60726697
Another GOAT track is Wishing
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=opkzgLMH5MA
Kinda similar to Space Age Love Song
theres an Dream Academy song, but I cant think of it right now
Joan of Arc - OMD (not waltz)
Aint it a Shame - B52s
Telegraph - OMD
>>60727075
Alot have said Wishing, never really hit the high quality vein for me like the others did.
I'd say Telecommunication is closer to the top, and I liked others like Committed, Suicide Day, and Heartbeat Like a Drum a bit more.
>>60727170
Just listened to a few of those for the first time, thanks, good stuff
>>60727768
Of course, glad you appreciated!
