What's stopping me from stealing someone's riff and then putting it in a constant loop and I just reverb the fuck out of it and feed it plugins until it sounds like popcorn in the microwave and then I just record myself screaming and layer it 3 minutes in and finish "my song" and then I photoshop a picture of wooden baby blocks next to a pyramid and slap a name on it like "nutseed library" and then I keep doing this until you faggots find my shit and start eating it up

I really wanna participate in NBND but am lacking some albums. I really enjoy the masochistic nature of Whitehouse's work especially the spoken word tracks like Cut Hands Has The Solution along with any musician or album that just has an interesting back story like John Duncan's Blind Date or any of The Gerogerigegege's work. Any suggestions from /noise/?

>>60726085
that track comes from my EPOTY, repetition reinforcement, it has probably my favorite vocal performance of all of PE.

also if you want noise with an interesting backstory I'd suggest checking out Aube. none of his albums, as far as I'm aware, have all that much of a "backstory" per se but each one is constructed out of a single sound source. I find it really fascinating to think about how much the original sound has changed when listening to his work. I'd suggest Cardiac Strain as a good intro album. afaik it's his most famous and it's got some really intense long builds that were responsible for getting me hooked on his work in the first place. the album is sourced exclusively from recordings of heartbeats.

In a similar vein I'd also suggest Eric Holm - Andoya it's a rhythmic noise album sourced from contact mic recordings of wind whipping over telephone wires outside of a norwegian military listening station on an island in the arctic sea. It does an amazing job of conveying the cold and desolate aesthetic of the place it was sourced from.

really? i've found merzbow's latest releases very dull, like his recent live shows. it seems like he's diluted his style to an occasionally listenable analog pulse and his merztar noise. there's not many other elements to it. i prefer the chaotic glass shattering metallic explosions of his 90s work or the more experiment laptop era stuff. i felt like he was phoning it in on the latest releases.

had to solder a new contact mic, since I turned my first one into dust. Soldering isn't that hard now, and the new mic is better.
played with a metal sheet and a hair drier today and got some pretty convincing results even without amplification.
tried to make a song (i'm building sound for a audio drama I have in mind), but failed. utterly.

listened to some eai, today - "Loose Community." it featured otomo and some other folks. wasn't bad, had it's parts.

haven't listened to any actual noise today, maybe I'll kick in something ambient before calling it a day.

>>60732062
you have a really great ear for texture and sound in general. I love how the tin remains identifiable on one part, and how it disappears in the mess of metal on the other. Still, as >>60732444 says, there's a certain lack in dynamics (loud/silent, fast/slow, etc) that really makes the track boring for the listener. It's intense in the first minute, but it remains the same after that and the listener becomes to feel at ease with your music, which I think wasn't the goal with this one. Try the use of collage techniques or the exploration of dynamics. As always -
listen to merzbow

>>60730329
I like it! Really subtle and delicate. I love how the elements submerge and raise though each other. The premise is simple, and the effects applied are basic, but the end result is really nice. The mixing/mastering went really well, all the elements are outspoken and dynamics between them are really fluid.

>>60734348
I hope I have the time to listen to your stuff more. I went trough the shorter tracks on "Japanese in a jiffy" and I have to say I envy your sound. You managed to unleash some pretty rad whirlwinds, and there's the classic low burning textures. It's good to hear some of the classic sounds made by someone in a thread.
>>
>>60734348
so, to continue. I really like the sounds and sometimes you manage to make good use of the background, taken there are several years of output. Again, I wonder what you can do with silence, seeing you are so good with being loud.

>>60737797

imo way too much highs but it's interesting. Tho I think that you should focus more on rubbing cause punching doesn't work really. I think you should work a bit at your hand technique but that's only my inner-drummer kicking in.

is there more noise/tape loops thats as hypnotic as this?
>>
>>60738228
I zoned out hard to Aaron Dilloway - psychic driving tapes earlier today. I love his style of evolving loops
>>
>>60738088
I tried to use it as a gong, but the reverb I get from that, fades as an effect with the amplification of the track. I settled on rubbing/bowing since it it's easier to produce variety with it and the sound output is more constant. I also made some sticks with jar caps for ends (one on them even supplied with magnets, that magically, don't do jack shit). Anyway, takes for the advice - i'm still experimenting with basic sound output from "found" sources, but thinking of it, since I've found the tin, I should take every chance for improvement.

Your sound is really deep and laidback. I find character in it, which is really good. Still, there's a lot you can find, searching for variety and abrasiveness. Really interested to see more some times.
>>
>>60738316
As that third guy said. The best way to treat metal is to treat it with a shovel.(I like this idea. Few microphones/speakers/doesn't matter and a lot of useless rubbish).
Do you use pure data?
>>
>>60738433
I don't for now. I really enjoy exploring acoustics and I will try to move further into them soon (looking forward to buying a mixer and a microphone).
A friend of mine suggested importing pictures as raw data, but I only get short noise bursts from them, which I can't work with my sound and conceptual frame yet.
Which is not pure data exactly, but is the closest I'll get to digital, anytime soon. I'm thinking of learning to use audiomulch, pd or max soon (which one would you recommend?), but for now I think I'll stay with the tin.

I'm >>60732062 # thanks for this, feedback helps a lot. Changing dynamics has always been a challenge for me, a lot of my tracks are long explorations of one sound, so I'll definitely be working on it when I make my next thing. Still, I like the way this one turned out and had fun making it. I'll be keeping an ear out for dynamic changes when listening.

Unpopular opinion here

But earplugs actually make live performances sound better. It's still loud, but you can hear all the dynamic ranges and the clarity of the instruments when you use ear plugs.

Don't get me wrong, volume doesn't affect me at all, but if I wanted to get the fullest out of a show, I'd wear earplugs so I can hear all of the instruments as if it is straight from the mix.

That's why you also see many musicians wearing earpieces.

NBND comp guy here. Been away from my computer for the past couple of days, and I'm waiting on my shit Australian internet speed to upload the rest of the submissions I got recently.

Gotta write a little bio for a few more artists, but after that it should be ready for download. I made a bandcamp too, so once they're all available for download via the URL I've provided below, I'll add it all to BC and add some album art. Nothing too edgy or /mu/ related, as it seems like a fairly mixed bunch of noise to me. Bits of ambient type things, digi-noise and more traditional feedback based stuff seems to be the most common in this bunch.

Hey guys, I'm usually not a noise guy at all, but recently I've been listening to this record called Cuts of Guilt, Cuts Deeper by Merzbow and co, since it's a bit of a rock record, I guess.

I'm usually more a rock fan with a penchant for more experimental stuff, so this really intrigues me. I like it, I guess, but at the same time, I think it's because I feel like I could "get" it, but I can't, you know, physically? Since I'm not a noise music guy myself, generally speaking. All I own in terms of noise is MMM and Prurient's FNF.

Anyway, what are your guys take on this album? I'm pretty sure I've never seen it on /mu/, so what are the noise guys on here/in general thinking about this record? I mean, it's weird to me, and not exactly atmospheric—it's like I have to learn a whole new way to listen to music. Like, I can understand and appreciate some Merzbow, I guess, but the way the four players work here, it's some crazy cacophony for me, like MMM but actually somehow so compelling that it's kind of hard for me to just turn off.
>>
>>60750433
>but I can't, you know, physically
Or maybe it's that I get it physically, but not exactly mentally. I'm not really sure how I should phrase it, but it's like—I find the music enjoyable somehow, I just don't understand how I'm oriented to the music. Like, for example, in ambient music, you let it wash over you, and make it the atmosphere around you, rather than always pay attention to it. Conventional rock, it's like a statue—it's there, you pay attention to it, all the details, for a short time, and then you move on. This record, maybe because it uses drums for more definitive rhythmic structure, feels like somewhere in between—I want to put myself inside it, like ambient music, but just the sheer force of the noise and the drums feel like they simultaneously beckon me in and push me out, you know?

But seriously, what do you guys think of this album? I won't exactly know if this record is massively overhyped since I'm generally not into noise in the first place, but it seems compelling and genuinely intriguing to me.
>>
>>60750526
>I won't exactly know if this record is massively overhyped
Well I've never heard it but I've also only seen people talking about it a handful of times so I wouldn't call it overhyped.

I think I get what you're trying to say about letting the sound wash over you. I tend to get a similar kind of appreciation for noise music as with psychedelic music where I'm very actively listening but the music is hypnotic so I kinda just take it as a whole.

No experience with a label, though I'd love to start something in the future. No experience other than making noise for about a year and a bit, but it wasn't all that hard. I honestly only posted call outs in these threads about four times
>>
I think the biggest shift in thinking I had in going from rock/guitar oriented music to noise was the lack of rhythm. Yeah, a lot of the distortion and textures were present, but it was always the lack of a discernable rhythm which threw me off. It was like, ok, how is my body meant to react to this? Occasionally in some HMW type noise, I feel a sort of tremolo based crescendo arise from nowhere, especially at loud volumes. In the case of that album you posted though, the feeling I get from it is much like when i heard math rock for the first time. I wanted to like it, but was so put off by the way the instruments were being used. I knew how they usually sounded, but it wasn't the same.

I'm gonna check it out right now with my morning coffee. I'm generally not a huge fan of Merzbow's collaborations except with Richard Pinhas (their styles just seem to fuse really well to me). Balazs Pandi, the drummer on this 2015 release, never really impressed me much with Merzbow. I don't know what it is, I guess I got used to hearing some of Masami's own drumming which is high energy, pretty chaotic free jazz style playing. I feel like Balazs doesn't have the energy and gets trapped repeating too many dull rolls for my taste. And in the other "Cuts" album I didn't appreciate Mats' contributions much.

As this album is starting, I hear the "dying elephant" sounds from Mats' sax. I guess Masami appreciates it in that way, it has ties to jazz but also sounds like a dying elephant, which fits the whole vegan animal rights "meat is murder" type of conceptual mindset. I read about how, once, Thurston Moore went to Japan, and Masami was his tour guide, taking him to obscure record shops, saying "get this, don't get this", and in general was very welcoming.
>>
>>60753943
Anyway, regarding "how to listen to this", coming from a rock background, I think you have to appreciate that all those limitations inherent in riff rock type stuff are melted away in noise. I have a friend that's a drummer in a grunge/alternative rock type of band and he really just can't "get" noise. He needs structure, he needs riffs, he needs discernible formulas, parts, to hold on to, otherwise it just strikes him as meaningless noise. As a drummer, he's limited to playing to songs, he can't get into the free jazz style of playing. It's like his body is too robotic, mechanical, can only play in one way, and because of that, he can only listen in one way.

It's interesting to look into the origins of noise artists like Merzbow, Keiji Haino etc. They were influenced primarily by 70s psychedelic rock, they wanted to do something similar themselves, yet apparently felt trapped by creating structures, songs, and wanted to expand beyond those limitations. They wanted the aesthetic, the sound, the tones, the abrasive intense stimulating sound, without set in stone songs which they'd play the same way every time. Masami saw Cecil Taylor Unit with Andrew Cyrille on drums in Tokyo in the early 70s, when he was a young guy. It must have been hugely influential, hearing a free jazz unit peak live. You can hear elements of it in Merzbow to this day, decades later.

In rock music, every second tends to count. You know, you might miss a crucial bit. Your attention span gets closed in to 3 minutes, 5 minutes... that's why the average person goes "wow, a ten minute song? that's crazy!" because their attention span has been limited to a few minutes, in which they hear everything minutely. Noise tends to be more expansive, it's less about the details, more about the overall effect on your mindset.

Well, I'm no expert, but-

It sounds like some simple synthesizers and a drum machine being dubbed hot to tape, it sounds like tape distortion to me, not just a regular pedal, and since it effects everything equally, that's my best guess.

There's delay on the vocals, and some sort of bass instrument, possibly a guitar or another synth.

I like the song, it's pretty straightforward gothic synth-pop stuff but I have a weak spot for that shit anyway.

I think it might be the judgmental implication people have when they say it. When I hear people say "noise isn't music", what usually follows is a follow-up on how and/or why you listen to it. It's sort of meant to discredit the genre by questioning the legitimacy of not only the music, but also the person listening to it. It's generally not a nice thing to say.

>so I can hear all of the instruments as if it is straight from the mix.
Dude earplugs dampen high frequencies a lot more than lower frequencies. I know it's not noise, but I noticed that when I saw Godspeed You! Black Emperor live, while I always bring earplugs with me to a show, their performance wasn't nearly as loud as I expected, and was better without earplugs.
Keep in mind sub-bass you will feel regardless of ear plugs.

Also, the stuff musicians have in their ears are monitors; they use that to hear their own performances, not to plug their ears.

Then again, I'm not a big noise guy, so if it's different in this genre, I wouldn't know.

Noise it's kinda different. Shit happens when one chick is skreaming at the top of her lungs, two other guys destroy guitars and one no-input fucker is screeching his brain away. I do NBND so I only listened to 379
3 is rather boring i think. I don't like that hazy texture and seems too long to me. I like that screaming voices tho. It's too long and focuses too much one rather one-dimensional idea I think. End is so. Pointless.
7 is like this negative space where band starts playing and nothing is certain for sure. I like that feeling. It seems more like study of an object than a "song". Kinda what early futurists did but not as interesting. Also this annoying hazy texture again.
9 love the glitches. Again negative space but in my opinion much more creative and well made. Hazy texture again but at least it isn't too long. But sadly, again it seems to me more like study of an material than full blown track.

Otomo Yoshihide said that part of his influence for creating noise was listening to 60-70's rock (he cited the who btw, i'm talking about his rbma talk) on a crappy player. He put the volume up to eleven and listened to what came out. For him that was rock.
For me noise is rock in some sense. It's nihilistic, individual, it's about the physical, it's about the volume. Of course nowadays it's much more than this, but that's how I see things and what I strive for in my "work".
Anyway, for me a big thing was starting to make noise myself, or just trying to be loud and abrasive. That's when I found out how much work goes into the sound alone, not to mention the collage and the use of dynamics, that are key to the some of the more "traditional" noise. (I'm really not that well versed here, so don't take me seriously)
Anyway, if you liked that (and that's a free improv album) you may want to look up Last Exit and Brötzmann's Machine Gun and Nipples.
Thurston Moore's improv output never seemed interesting to me.

Are all of these new to you?
>>
thanks to the guy who recommended me japanoise by david novak. a seriously great and insightful book, recommended reading for anyone with even a passing interest in noise
>>
>>60761270
yes, I've listened to a fair amount of Skin Graft, Hive Mind and Sick Llama, but not these particular releases
it's about time I plundered more of Hanson Records anyway
>>
>>60761291
Have you read any other books on noise?
>>
>>60761914
sadly none other than the paul hegarty one which i'm reading now as well. building up something of a backlog of books now since i started reading more. on noise, amazon is recommending me:

>'Resonances: Noise and Contemporary Music' by Michael Goddard
>'Noise Matters: Towards an Ontology of Noise' by Greg Hainge
both of which seem good too

Someone asked me what I was listening to recently and I made the mistake of answering honestly with noise. They asked me if I was a murderer or paedophile

Cmon buddy, you KNOW that you should always answer with the names of three remixed songs.

>I know a guy who does this
>He uses beats that are broken
>he wont stop using them because they are "Superior" beats
>the audio on them constantly cuts out
>hes okay with this

Anybody see this movie? The guy she's making out with plays a noise musician and there's a scene where he tries to explain it to her.

maybe so, but this guy singing the choruses of these remixed songs way too loud (even the glitchy parts, he copies them almost perfectly) is awful.
>>
>>60762922
noise being referenced in things like that always freaks me out

it's like someone's violated your secret little world

I tend to stay far away from oh-so-quirky comedy movies
They invariably try way too hard
>>
>>60762949
don't bash him. He just realised that true noise comes from vocals. (Srsly tho, I think that no noisician ever will beat junko)
